A United South.
That great political desideratum, a united
South, has been achieved at last, so far as tho
Confederate Slates are concerned, and, we
hope soon to Include all the elaveboldiDg 8tates
Our people, for once, are all of the same mind
and the same heart, so far as human frailty
will allow them. From one extent of the
new Confederacy to the other, we hear no
complaint, no murmur, over either our Gov
ernment or Its rulers. All are agreed that
the provisional Constitution is just what it
Rhould be, and that the right men have been
cbofun to administer it. We hear no party,
no etrife, no contention in the Confederate
Stales. All recognize its authority and its
policy, and are ready to lend a helping
hand to forward its great purpose! to a
successful and glorious consummation.—
Seldom, in the history of the World, has such
a revolution been accomplished, and never,
until this day, have such peaceful and benefi
cent results followed a great political change.
We have reason (o be thankful for this dispo
sition of the hearts of our people, and it au>
gars a bright and triumphant future for our
new Republio. We have only to continue in
this spirit of accord and forbearanoe, this tol
eration of differences of opinion, this readi.
ness to sacrifice individual opinion on minor
points for the public good, this freedom from
parly aod its unnumbered curses, to become a
free, happy and prosperous people.
We have spoken of human frailty, for aus
picious as everything appears, we are still
mortals and subject to the influence of past
passions and prejudices, to a more or less ex
tent. The old Democratic, Whig, and Ameri
can fires have not wholly gone out, and so
long ae tho embers remain warm, we shall
probably see an occasinoal spark emitted from
the expiring mass. This is to be expected—it
could not well otherwise, for time alone heals
up the wound and bitterness of the past. We
are not angels, but men. These, however,
will pass away in their season, and, we trust
be forgotton forever. We have a great and
difficult destiny, to work out, with but little
real sympathy from the world abroad or
around us ; we cannot, therefore, afford to
quarrel among ourselves, and each citizen
should do all in his power to promote unam*
mityof opinion ^and harmony of feeling. In
this regard the Press has an important duty
to perform, and it should do it faithfully.
In (his connection we may state that we re
ceived, some days ago, from au intelligent
friend in MiddleGeorgia, an article deprecating
in severe terms, the occasion ebulition of jeal
ously and ill-will on the part of the (late) De
mocratic preee and Isadora, toward a distin
guished leader of the Opposition party, now a
delegate to Congress from this State.
Though sympathising, in our views and
feelings, with the writer, we have declined to
publish it, being convinced that it would in
flame rather than ally irritation. Let by
gones be by gones, and those who would per
petuate the strifes of the past, for unworthy
personal or political ends, learn from their
isolation that suoh a war at this day finds no
response in the popular heart. This will si-
ence them far sooner than any outward de
monstration of opposition, whilst we hive
every confidence that the great and good
man at whom such shafts are aimed, will
continue, as he has done in the past, to soar
far above their reach.—Sav. Republican.
