AUGUSTA.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1827.
The Superior Court for Richmond
County will commence its sitting on this
*Jay week.
A friend ir* Milledgeville writes us that
it is probable the State House will be en
larged, or the Seat of Government re
moved elsewhere.
On Monday last, on the Saluda Moun

South Carolina, Mr. Vance was shot thro’
the body in a duel with Mr. Carson.—
They were rival candidates for Cjngress
last August in North Carolina. Mr. Car-

much noise and disturbance as the Mor

tragical.

MR. FORSYTH’S ADDRESS
Fellow Citizens ;—The distinguished
honor conferred upon me by the people,
fills me with gratitude and apprehension—
gratitude for their kindness—apprehen
sion lest their expectations may be disap
pointed. To the office for which I have
been selected, I bring no experience, and
but an imperfect knowledge of its duties.—
All I can safely promise is, good inten
tions. To satisfy public anticipation, if
favorable, usually too sanguine, is always
a difficult task—under present circum
stances it is peculiarly so. Independent
of other considerations, too well known to
require enumeration, there is one, the ex
istence of which, however unfavorable
may be its effects to myself, it would be
criminal to regret. The judgment formed
of every administration is the result of a
comparason with that which immediately
preceeded it. Difficult indeed is the path
before me, when the public mind is occu-

Mr. Cheves is recommended in Penn

nominated at Lexington, Ken., by the

The Editor of the Middletown Gazette

At the late meeting of his friends, he says,
there were actually five.

has beeen administered by my respected
and fortunate predecessor. Trusting how
ever to that indulgence heretofore shown
to mv public life, I shall seek to merit the
approbation of the people, perfectly confi

the Senators and Representatives of the
people, that upon them rests, under the
constitution, the great burthen of public
responsibility. Without their aid, the
Chief magistrate is almost powerless.—
It is for you, gentlemen, to assert the

we published lately from the same hand.
The Intelligencer thinks these letters are
written under a morbid irritability t pro
duced by his consciousness of at present
acting in favor of Gen. Jackson against
the convictions of bis judgment and good
sense. Whatever may be the cause, there
is an angry excitement, most unfavorable
to the cause of truth, which pervades the
bosoms of three-fourths of our politicians
and great men. Are we to judge of men’s
characters from the representations in the
newspapers? Will not this species of
public illumination lose its usefulness?—
Ts there now any credit given bv the peo
pie to half the statements daily issued
from the press ? And when its usefulness
is lost, at whose door will lie the blame?

We have repeatedly given Mr. Noah’s
opinions of Gen. Jackson at the last Pre
sidential election. The following was
ms opinion of Mr. Adams in 1821; and
though it is not m enthusiastically ex
pressed as that of the Richmond Enquirer,
who was proud tl$e same country gave
birth to two such great men, it is sufficient
to show how wonderfully changed are his
opinions at present:
\f July 14, 1821.
i lr. Adams is a very extraordinary man.
He excites but very little interest; he ap-
ttars to have no friends who on pressing
him before the people, and who wish to
secure to him an approbatin which be does
not merit or a rank to wliich he is not
entitled ; and yet he occasional presents
himself to the world in a garb so alluring
that memthink highly of him, in reference
to the “high places” against their will.
1 he productions of his pen act like silent
monitors, and produce reflection, wlvjch
ever will result in his favor. His triumph is
always an enviable one: It is the triumph
of genius, reason and intelligence.
