FELIX GRUNDY.
Gen. Andrew Jackson.
Nashville Inn, Nov. 15th. 1827.
Dear Sir: Your letter of this day has
been received, and I hasten to answer it.
The statement to which you allude is
wholly destitute of truth. I was not in
the Senate Chamber or Anti-Chamber in
the year 1819. My Aids de Camp were
General Call and Captain Easter. The
former is still living and will satisfy any
person who will enquire ofhim, that the
statement is untrue. As to Commodore
Decatur and myself having such conver
sation as stated to have taken place in the
anti-chamber ofthe Senata ; we never had
such a conversation there or elsewhere.—
Com. Decatur and myself were friendly
at all times, and no harsh or unkind expres
sions ever passed from one to the other
So far from mv visiting the Senate Cham
ber, I was invited to do so by several
the members of that body, I declined do
ing so and assigned my reasons for my
conduct.
I am very respectfully,
your most ob’t servant,
ANDREW JACKSOxN.
The Honorable F. Grundy, Esq,
You farther say, irho tab doubt the ob
ject of the simultaneous movement, the
purchase of Hamburg by a Chaileston
Company, and the commencement of
those projects for a Canal and Rail Road.
I cannot agree with you, that the farcical
sale and purchase of Hamburg, had any
connexion with the projects which the
citizens of Charleston contemplate to ex
ecute. But I do not doubt the object of
the knowing ones, was a great speck.—
But the biters got bit.
Respectfully yours.

REVIEW of the Augusta Market, for the week
—
FORTHE GEORGIA COURIER.
CO THE EDITORS OF THE GEORGIA COURIER.
Gentlemen :—Permit me through the
medium of your columns, to call the at
tention of the young men of this city to an
important subject. It is a well known fact,
that many of the younger members of our
community have already been borne upon
tiie stream of fashionable life, into the
vortex of dissipation, and that many a fair
youth has fallen a victim to the snares of
what has been falsely termed “a life of
pleasure.” We all know that youth must
have us amusements, and that the hours
unoccupied by business must be employed
in one way or another. To give the
mind a turn for pursuits which will tend
to amuse, while they are a benefit, should
be the desire of every lover of his country.
It should be the endeavor of every man,
to divert the mind of youth from evil, and
to fdirect it into a useful channel. The
establishment of the Library in this city,
cannot be too highly valued. Many who
now spend their time in idle pursuits, will
hereafter devote their leisure hours to
reading. As an addition to this valuable
institution, I would recommend the young
men of this place to imitate their associ
ates of New-York and Philadelphia. In
both these cities literary societies exist,
composed generally of young men. Their
object is principally mutual improvement
in elocution and composition. To ex
press our ideas in appropriate and elegant
style, and also to deliver them in a becom
ing manner, are things, the value of which
every person knows. To Americans in
particular, the associations in which thev
are cultivated are useful, for they form, as
it were, the schools wherein our young
men may prepare themselves for the per-
formance of the duties of a citizen. In
this country every man has a voice in the
concerns of the country. In societies of
this nature, a Canning, Curran, and manv
ot the greatest orators the world has seen
first put forth their powers. In these so
cieties, the dawn of their brilliant talents
became visible, ana then did they little
imagined that they were about to cast
such a dazzling halo around the history of
themselves and their country.
The immortal Franklin admired highly
these associations, as they tended to im
prove the minds of young men, while at
the same time they afforded them a pure
and rational amusement. In fine, I would
recommend young men, as well those pur
suing a professional as a mercantile busi
ness, to unite and form themselves into a
Forensic Club. There are many of
them who possess talents for such an in
stitution, and require only practice to per
fect them in the ait of speaking. Bv
employing their time in this useful manner,
they will hereafter, perhaps, be able to
reap honor and benefit both for them
selves and their country.

Gibraltar.—The Walls of Gibraltar
have been lately repaired, and are now.
perhaps, the most beautiful specimens of
fortification in the world. They are built
f large stoues, cut out of rock, which are
extremely hard, of a whitish color, and
have all the appearance, and, indeed, con
sistency of marble. The Moorish castle,
which overlooks the town, and probably
has stood these 500 or 600 years, is built
entirely of brick. It bears sad marks
still of the siege which 'he gallant Elliot,
with GOQO men, sustained for more than
three years against the combined armies
and fleets of France and Spain. It is
now a prison. There are about 600 guns
mounted at present—and about 980 alto
gether, could be put in activity in case of a
siege.
We learn that the Governor’s re
jection of the resolution respecting the Da
rien Bank, may possibly bo overruled in
both houses.—-Sav. Georgian.

FOR THE GEORGIA COURIER.
Edgefield Prison, Dec. 11,1827.
Messrs. Editors :—1 noticed 3 few
remarks of yours, under date of the 10ih
instant, speaking of the meeting held in
Charleston, respecting Rail Roads and
Canals. You also say, that Hamburg has
probably passed into the management of a
wealthy Charleston Company.
1 his is an error, our Town did not pass
into their management, but their money
did pass into the management of our
Company, or in other words, we got the
money, and they an empty pocket; for
we released them of 22,000 dollars, and I
must confess my regret, that we did not
release them of the other 8,000. They
were too quick on the trigger—one min
ute more would have done the business.
In the presence of perhaps one hundred
persons, I publicly told them that the sale
aould not be a good one, and stated the
reasons, and that they could not get the
town. If they bought and paid their mo
ney for any thing, it would be a law suit,
but not the town, and further stated that I
did uot want their money, and advised
them to keep it, if they bad any, or use it
elsewhere, for there was no speculation
for them here, yet they would give it to
us, we took it, and will take as much more,
cn the same terms, as wo can g^t.
