occur; aod it was at these times, the neighbor
ing yeomanry, would venture to catch a glimpse
•f this singular being. Sometimes he *ouid
shut himself up in these little closets, and mutter
for hours to himself,—but of the subject or cause,
the inhabitants, from these ravings, could gain
no clue.
It was at this rate, that things went on for ma
ny years; when, one evening, just about this
-time, a person was observed on the opposite
•side of the River, slowly and attentively winding
bis way towards the ferry.—He wore in his ap.
pearance. the enquiring aspect of a stranger.—
He was clad in a suit of black, over which, was
•thrown a long dark travelling cloak, whose fur
colar was so high as to, when clasped, entirely
preclude any observance of his features. He
*vas apparently well formed for his height—
graceful and easy in his movement—_vei majestic
and firm. The person, who set him across, was
closely interrogated respecting the inhabitant of
this Cave, and the length ot time he had been a
resident. And after gaining such information as
-rreemed satisfactory, disappeared immediately in
the direction of the Cave. £
“ The clouds, which had long been threat’ning,
had by this time, totally encompassed the hori
zon, and flashes of lightning, accompanied by
terrifiic peals of thunder, now rolled along the
firmament, and the furious winds,as they howled
dreadfully in the distance, foretold of a night,
fearfully dismal. Anri faith, it was ; for scarce
had the stranger traveller reached the entrance
of the Cave, when huge drops of rain began to
pelt with violence the naked and barren sides of
this castle of nature. As the traveller approach
ed, tlie Wild Man was seated in his usuul dreary
and desolate mood—muttering to himself words,
which were inconipr* iiensible to every one but
himself—shoving and motioning, as if trying to
lihun, or clear *om** form or obstacle, from his
eizhf. —•• Yes!” he ejaculated, for the first time
distinctly, “ Wilbornc, ’fis you!—Thine is the
detested fairn that thwarts me ! —Thou mayst re
venge thyself, but thou shall struggle for it'—Thy
apirit too, shall wing its way with mine, and stand
before that God, who gave it, nod there, face so
face, sue for thy right—should we but meet
again!”
At this, he was ah. nil to rush out into the tem
pest, when, meeting the traveller at the entrance,
he sprung hack, and exclaimed, — "lln! Wit.-
horns. !" and pressing lim forehead and temple*
with both hand*, and fuzing at him with a horrid

COMMUNICATED.
THE DUKE OF ORLEANS.
As most of your readers will, no doubt, be de
sirous of being made acquainted with the char
acter of the Duke of Orleans, whom the Pari
sians have recently placed at the head of the
Nation; I extract for their gratification the fol
lowing items from a short biographical sketch
which I happen to have of him “ O.”
He it nearly 57 years of age, having
been born in October 1773. At first, he
was named Due de Valais, but afterwards
Due de Chat Ires. In youth, he was re
markable for tho sedateness aud reserve
of his character, as well as for his mode
ration aud prudence. Under permission
of a decree of i lie National Assembly, he
took command in 1791 of the 14ih Kegi
ment Dragoons, then at Vendome. He
was always prompt in humane actions—
once saving, at the imminent risk ot bis
own life,that of a drowning man—and at
Vendome, he interfered and saved a
Priest from thu populace, accused of an
art of contempt towards a procession con
ducted by a constitutional Curate.
Ho joined with his Regiment, the army
of the North, and in April, 179*. fought
at Quievrain and IJossu under Geneia!
Biron—and as Marshal Camp, under
Luckoer, before Courtray. As Lieut.
General under Killerman, commanding
the 2d line of an army of 25,000, oppos
ed to 80,000 Prussians, he signalized
himself in the decisive combat at Valtny.
Joining the army of Flanders, he com
mundtrd the second column under Du
mouticr, in the celebrated battle of Je
mappe.
