that placi can give tbem puWicatiou. We think, therefore, tb*‘ there been no »*on«te»«» r y or improper delay ; nor was there any thing in the Report* themselves, that required, that the people should be put on their guard. The fail i wre of the Merchants & Planters Bank alone gave pungency to the desire to see the Bank Reports; and what is there in its Report, which could ex cite suspicion in the mind of the Executive as to its Solvency 7 On the contrary, if the expecta tions of that Report should be all realised, the Bills of that Bank trill be worth one hundred and fifty cents on the dollar instead of fifty—in other words, it Will be more than able to pay its debts. Will the Editor of the News review his strictures on this subject, and examine the Reports, which are now before hire, and say if he can honestly attach blathe to the Executive for any thing he has done, or not done, in the premises. We a gree with the News in insisting, in fature, on the publication of the Bank Reports; but let the law render it imperative on the Governor, and not leave it to his discretion, or rather restrict bim to simply laying them before the Legislature at its annual meeting. The preamble asserting the expediency of making known to the People the conditions of the Banks, may be construed so as to relate to the non-reporting Institutions. Their names are alone required to be published. The almost necessary inference, then, would be, that all, who had reported, were in a sound condi tion ; and as to them, the law does not provide further, than for the Governor’s reception of their reports, “ subject to the examination of the ■General Assembly.” I am a word of four letters— My|l, 2 Jr 4. is a utensil of a Gardner: My 3 2 lx 4 is the name of a man, My 1 2 Jr 3 to walk lame— My whole is to expect with desire. Our Rail Road, wo learn says the Charleston Evening Post, is progressing rapidly. Nearly the whole of the rails are now laid down, and the road will be completed, we understand, soon after the receipt of a quantity of iron from Eng land which is shortly expected. Outrage.— On Monday last, 15th inst. the office of the Superior Court Clerk ot Buncombe county which is situate in one of the lower rooms of the Court House, was broken open, by forcing off the lock, by some person or persons unknown.— The State, Trial, Execution and Minute Dockets; file of State papers from No. 1 to 59 ; all the appearance papers which had been Jeturbed since the sitting of the court, to the number of about 25, were purloined. Search was made in the neigh borhood the next morning, and the Min ute Ducket and some of the appearance papers were found secreted by tho.side of a log, covered with leaves, above 300 yards N. E. of the-Gouri House. In this dilemma the Judge availed himself of a copy of the docket in the hands of a member of the Bar, and, by the industry of the prosecuting officer, new papers were drawn, and the business was not materially impeded. Should the books portioned never be recovered, much in convenience and loss will be sustained by the citizens- of ;he cowffty. ■■■■■ ■ ■ • Coopering Extraordinary. —A country paper announces the marriage of a “Mr. Cooper to Miss Staves;” — unless hoops and heading should be lacking, we expect that barrels will soon be plenty. A Commentator, — At a literary insti tution near this, a Society of students were not long since engaged in a discussion of National Law. Authorities of all sorts were quoted by the various wranglers.— When the turn to speak came round to a certain facetious lad, he opened a book and laid a potatoe upon it. “There,” said he, “is Vatell’s law of Nations, and there is a common-’tater upon it.” Miss Kemble is said to be engaged to Keppell Craven, Esq. a near relative of Earl Craven, #hich engagement is to be consummated on her return to England. The editor of the Pennsylvania wishes to know “who her grand*daughter will marry, sometime about the year 1862?” What curiosityl The following anecdote contains more of humor than of truth, but it is perfectly in character. While Col. Crockett was at Washing ton, with his daughter, a young gentleman who had been paying his addresses to her, wrote to him requesting his permission that they might be married. The reply of the Col. was in the following laconic style; Washington,— ■ “Dear Sir—l received your letter. Go ahead. DAVID CROCKETT.” Exchange of Visits. —lt has been confidently stated that next summer Mr. Clay intends to visit Boston, and that Mr. Webster will make an excursion to the Western States. We have heard from various sources that Mr. Clay would in all probability come this way. Mr. Reeside, the Mail contractor, has given half his propperty in the town of Cumberland, Md. for the relief of the sufferers by the late conflagration at that place. The value is not stated. George Loyall has been re.ellected to Congress from the Norfolk district* Vir ginia, by a majority of 163 votes over Mlles King. The hon Levi Woodbury, Secretary of the Navy, passed through this city a day or two since on his was to Pensacola. This is the first visit of the honorable Se cretary to this city, and on which occa sion the friends of the administration invi ted him to a public diqjier, but the urgen cy of business did not permit him to ac cept the proffered civilities.—2V.
