Madntn !” cried the husband. *'l*ve won
11 already*” Pooh ! child,” returned the
lady, “you have mistaken the time I
meant the week after' I’qb buried!”
Poor Jack.-— lt was at
point that the poor child of a dissolute &
profligate sailor importuned his unhappy
father for some bread, tv lien the abandon
ed wretch in a fit of intoxication, it is
supposed, spurned him frotft him with his
foot, and he fell into the sea, where lie
disappeared, and was thought toTte drown
ed. The hand of Providencetvas, howev
er, bis protection. Bv dirigirig to a raft,
he fl rated till ho was picked up by a ves
sel then under weigh. The child could only
• ell them his name was Jack, but the hu
manity of the care of him. Poor Jack,
as he grew up, was promoted to wait on
the officers, receive.! instruction easily,
was quick and steady, and served in some
a actions. In the last year he was appoint
ed to the care of the wounded seamen.
Jack had previously also formed an ac
quaintance with some religious sailors,
and became truly p’ioud. His notice was
therefoie naturally Attracted to a wounded
sailor with a Bible under his pillow, and
•who approaching his end, presented it to
the lad, telling him it was the instrument
of his conversion. One thing, however,
weighed heavily on his conscience—he
had been guilty of the murder of his child .
He then related the circustance above re
ferred to and Jack recognized in the dy
ing sailor his own father.
It is needless to attempt, as it is im
possible to decribe, the scene <>f mutual
joy, affection, giatimde to Heaven, which
now took place. After* the death oi his
father, Jack returned to land, left the nau
tical profession, and in the course ot years
became a dissenting minister.
This story, of course drew tears of j jv
-and sympathy from all who heat.d it when
first related, which was at a meeting of the
Bible Society, in or near London ; and
the narrator closed, bowing to the Chair,
in these impressive words—**J, Sit, am

THE subscriber having recently taken out
letters patent from the United- States for a
new principle of applying Animal power, which
I call the Accelerator; the discription of this
machine is such that it can be applyed to Mills
generally where animal power can be applied.
I offer the following statement to the public to
show that 1 have proved the power of my ma
chine, I erected a temporary saw mill, with one
saw, to which I put 2 horses, (the horses were not
accustomed to work in a circle,) and sawed thro’
a fourteen inch log with more ease than 'wo
horses can Gin in the common mode of applica
tion; the horses being removed, eight men worked
the machine, and ciit tit the rate of thirteen hun
dred & cghty feet pef day.—Say that one third
of the time is lost in returning the log anil put
ting on fresh logs, the ttiachine is then adequate
to saw eight or nifie hundred feet per day with
two horses.
