MASSAGausSTTS. —The Legislature of Massachusetts convened at Bostob on the Ist inst. The Hun. Benjamin T. Pickman was chosen President of the Senate, and William B. Calhoun Speak er -f the House, having received jOO votes out of 501. John Kuhn was ap. ppinted Messenger, for the forty eighth time. , __ . The Speaker read to the House the following letter from the Hon. John Quincy Adams: . To the Speaker of he House of Repre* sentatives of the Commonwealth of Mas* sachuseits, for the year 1834. Washington, (D. C.) Dec, 21st 1834 Sir —From the returns of the votes of the People of the Coumontvealih, for the election of a Governor, for the ensuing vear, as they are given io the public jour nals, it appears that there has been no election by the people. It appears also that my name is one of ihe four having the highest numbers, among those be tween whom their suffrages were divided. . Io that event, should it be ascertained by the authentic canvass of the votes, my name will be one of the four from #hicb it will, by the provisions of the Constitu tion of the Commonwealth, be the pro vince of the House of Representatives to select two to be seot to the Senate, for the choice by that body; of a Governor of the State. . The object of this communication is, through you, sir, to request the members of the House to bestow their suffrages upon candidates, and to consider my name as withdrawn —as in the possible event of my election by the Senate, I Should deem it my duty to decline accept ing the appointment. Jam, with the highest respect, your ob’t serv’t and fellow citieo. JOHN QUINCY ADAMS.” The reading of this letter produced considerable sensation in the House.—- All parties appeared to be taken by sur prise. A curata of great learning and merit, £ut without any prospect of preferment, found an opportunity es preaching before Bishop Horne, who was so well pleased with his discourse and manner Os delivery that, aftpr service; hd sent his compli ments to him, desit tog to know his name, and where his living was. ‘My duty to his lordship/ replied the clergyman, ‘and- Celt him my name is Lewis—that living 1 have none; but my starving is in Wales.’ This smart answer did hot displease the. good bishop, who, some time after, pre sented him a valuable benefice. la the time of the Long Parliament, gaudys, a gentleman of bold spirit, was examined before the .House, when Len thall, the speaker*, put some ridiculous and impertinent questiouf to him, asking, at last, what countryman he was? “Ol Kent/ said, Sandy*; ‘and pray, may I da spand the same of y»uF *1 am out of the #’est/ said Xenthall* ‘By my troth/ re plied Sandys, ‘so I thought, for all the wise men come out of the east.* In some parish churches it was form erly the custom to separate the men from the women. A clergyman, being inter rupted by loud talking, slopped abort when a woman eager for the honour of hpr sex, arose and said, “Your reverence the noise is not among us.”—'*So much the better,” answered the priest, “it will be oyer the sooner. r Hou> to Borrow. — A friend of ours was thus accosted the other day:—Have you gotten dollars in small bills you will ex change for a X “O yes.” “Very well, said Jeremy, pocketing the money, “ I 11 hand you the X to-morrow.”— Lowel Times. The Obliging Neighbour .—Mr. Sa vcall, mother says as how would you be kind enough jist for to lend her your btl Lis, to blow the firel kase daddy’s broke ouro. Sukey do you jist tell your mammy, that as how I nevet makes a practice to lend my things out to any body, but if she likes she may cotpe here and blow all day.
