LONGSTREET. TO ®AY, the Noith’American Ga zette changes it, name, its Editor, and its political principles. Henceforth, it will be the advocate of t | >e doctrines contained in the Preamble and Resolu tions, of the Slate Rights Meeting, at Milledgeville, on die 1 Sih November last. Those tv ho arc unacquainted with the Preamble and Resolutions referred to,are informed—That they denounce, in un qualified terms, the well known Procla. mation and Force Bill: They re-essert, the principles of the Virginia and Ken tucky Resolutions of ’9B, in their plain, obvious, and primitive sense; onobscured by (ho sophistry of modern Federalits, and unimpaired by the strength.wasting refinement of hare hearted Republicans; They uphold Slate Sovereignty in a sen sible form, and with intelligible attributes: They maintain that the Geue*ai Govern ment derives its powers ft urn a compact between Sovereign Stales; That these powers qre limited the plain sense and intention of the instrument constitu ting that and that i» case of a deliberate, palpable, and dangerous exer* else (f other powers, not granted; it is the right Sf duty of the States to interpose for arresting the progress of the evil within their respective limitsand that they have fbe right “to judge as well of infrac tions of dip Constitution, as ofibe mode and measure of rediess.” The e are the principles of ihe Slate Rights’ Party of Georgia,’’ the princi ples of this gazette. We espouse them because wo find them blended with all the original elements of our Government; and because they arc admirable in theo. ry, and still more admirable in practice. Wo deprecate their antagonist doctrines; because ilieir promises have ever been— Consolidation; and their fruits—dissen tions, usurpation, injustice and oppres sion. Their first ten years’ reign, pro duced the Alien and Sedition Laws—and they fell. Their last ten years’ reign, have b'onghi 'he country to the verge of civil war; clothed the President with dictatorial power, exhibited his troops, on die match from State to State, in mena cing array—AND THEY REIGN ON > 111 this state of tilings, it becomes eve ry man who has the welfare of his coun try at heart, to consider what he can do to redeem her from disgrace, and rescue her from speedy dissolution. We believe that we cannot better direct our time and labor io this object, than by using our bon est endeavors to bring back die peo ple to ihe tepublicanism which they have forsaken. To this end,we take the State Rights Sentinel in charge, and earn eslly solicit lhe aid of all who think with us upon this deeply interesting subject. As we believe there is an inseparable connexion between virtue and happiness, vice and misery, whether considered in reference to bodies-poliiic, or to individ uals, it will be our ceaseless endeavor, to tmpiess this tru'h, upon lhe minds of the people nt large, and io make it, if pnssi tele., the leading maxim of t|»e party to which we belong All institutions, and asociations.iheiefore, which have for their object the improvement of the moral con* dition of our fellow citizens, will find a warm supporter in lhe Editor of this pa pe»; and all well wri'ten essays, tending to the same object, shall be welcomed to our columns. The State Rights Sentinel shall be an independent paper, or it shalfcease to be. It will pay a blind subservience to no paity; it will support the intentional errors of none; but it will not visit the er* rots of individuals upon the party, nor de sert tiro party, for occasional errors. When the party which it now advocates, shall depart from the Jeffersonian principles, ibis gazette will depart from them. , No pains will be spared to make the Sentinel instructing and interesting to all classes of readers; (hough other busi ness of the first importance, so bids me to promise much for a month or two to come. Our printing materials are entirely new and well selected, and we are well sup plied with operatives: we may therefore promise a speedy and handsome execu tion ofallJub work which may be entrust ed to us.
