Mr. Editor:—l am commissioned by the Rail Road Party of yesterday, to inform you ol the pleasure they enjoyed on the occasion The day, as you know, was bright as the eyet that illuminated the Ladies’ Car—a more lovely ■ one never gave a foretaste of the approach 01 spring. Not the slighest accident marred the harmony, or gave a painful interest to the day, It is true, the Ladies were not, at first, perfect ly assured of their safety, from the inexperience of most of them in Rail Road travelling; but be* fore their return to Hamburg, they were so strong in the confidence of security, that I be heve most of them regretted the termination of the trip. It is true, too, that some of them on theoutward pissagejenquired for Cologne, either from habit, or real necessity. But as there was none in company, and as the twist of tobacco* tendered by a gentleman to supply its absence, was not used, I leave it to you to decide, wheth er the state of feeling which existed on the re turn of the car, is not m lie philosophically ac counted for by the iacreas.d sense of safety in this mode of travelling. I suspect that you will contend that the very thought of tobacco to a lady would be n most poweiful anti trepidatic; but I oppose one ideal remedy aga nst the other, and am not afraid to trust the result of the ar gument in your hands. I believe the Car would easily run the 16 miles to the inclined Plane at Aikin, in | of an hour; but the prudence of the Engineer restricts its velocity to 10 or 12 miles per hour. As we whirled along, the enquiry was, where is Aikin? How far to Aikin? We were all aching to see Aikin .At last we reached the Inclined Plane its height 3700 feet—its base 185 feet below its top,and that top near 400 feet above Hamburg. You may judge, theres >re, th-it I have not ex aggerated tie pleasure of the occasion, when you thus perceive, that we were ail so much nearer heaven than when we started. Up we went the Inclined Plane at the rate of 20 miles an hour, and reached Aikin in a flash. If you wish to knewi what sort of a place Aikin is, go and see it, and advise your readers to do so. All I shall promise you now, will be a good dinner, if Mr. Pardue treats you as well as he did us. I need not add, that we returned to Hamburg at equally pleased with the exciting interest and nov hv of the whole scene. The Inclined Plane is the greatest curiosity. The Ladies will require no fans in going up or descending. The stationary Steam Machinery which sets the arrangement in operation, is it self a great cniiosity. We believe it was plan ned by Mr. Aller, Principal Engineer, and presents the fii st instance of a horiznntal crank, which I have ever seen in operation. Os the two levers which move it, operating at right an glcstoeech other, when one i : on the point of turning, the other is quarter round, tanking the half stroke—so ’.hat the motion is not only uni. form, but the power perfectly maintained.— There are two boilers Which may be used to* gather or not; so that it one should be out of or ner, there would be no interruption to the des patch of the Rail Road business. But 1 did not intend to describe Steam Engines and have elteady transcended all reasonable limits. I wish, however, the Capitalists among our citi zens could be rode out to Aikin. even if it were at the risk of their selfish necks. Our Rai| Road Commissioners might not lhen sit at Mi r ou Sc Daries' Office so lotig to so little purpose. Hoping, Sir, tlrat you may be present to de scribe the next Pleasure Trip yourself, and that the Party may be equally as agreeable, allow me to recommend all real R.oads to your favora-, hie notice, and that of your Readers Q. • married. Feb 7 2 17 TO THE PUBLIC. 9 TITHE subscriber having represented to many 3 J. persons who enquired how the fire, origin ated by which I must remark it has for u time ruined me and blighted all my prospects of future prosperity in the House, my self and family had labored to establish as a Hotel, for another season, At a 4 before 11 o’clock, on Sun day Night according to my regular custom 1 . went through the house and seen that all the ( fires had been carefully extinguished or covered over with ashes, and there was not any fire in the lower or upper pait of the House at that F hour, except a small lamp for the servants to , clean the Boots by. As the first discovery of the fire was mnde, by my Son and Bar Keeper who slept on the first floor and within 10 feet where •he Servants generally clean the Boots and Shoes, and where some of the Boys frequently slept behind a Counter, on their being awaked by the smoke my Oldest rSon opened his room I door and looked through the Key hole of the reading Room and discovered the reading desk on fire and the Bar Keeper bursting open the door discovered a large hole burnt through the floor as if coming through the Cellar in which there was not any thing kept except a small quant tity of li-htwood and this was generally brought up and sawed before dark to supply the difleren a|*artments requiring it, had the fire commenced where 1 first was inclined to think it had, no per son could have ascended the stair case to give me the alarm, on my receiving the first informa tion of it was by one of the Black boys who came up that way saying that there .was fire ii the Bar, and at that time it had came through the isl >or, from all the information I can collect I am nduced to believe it was the work of design, for what purpose I cannot conjee ure, on the first alarm I received I attempted to make my way through the back entry to arouse the Boardeis by which time the smoke had ascended the stairs case so th'ck I was obliged to retreat, and ran to thefront Belcouy and cried ire, which I pre sume the boarders must have heard, for in a few seconds thev came to the assistance and res cue of my children narrowly escaping them selves, 1 had caused my boy in the mean time to take the horse and gallop down town and give the alarm, that the Engines might arrive as soon as possible.
