PROSPECTUS OF THE

PUBLISHED IN AUGUSTA,GEW.
BY AUGUSTUS B. LONGSTREET.
TO DAY, the North-American Ga

and its political principles. Henceforth,
it will bo the advocate of the doctrines
contained in the Preamble and Resolu
tions, of tho State Rights Meeting, at
Milledgeville, on the 13’h November last.
Those who are unacquainted with the
Preamble and Rcsoluti- ns referred to,are
informed—That they denounce, in un
qualified terms, tho well known Prvcla.
malion and 1 orce Bilk They re-assert,
the principles of the Virginia and Ken
lucky Resolutions of’9B, in their plain,
obvious, and primitive sense; unobscured
by the sophistry of modern Federalits >
and unimpaired by the strength.wastiirg
refinement of hare hearted Republicans.*
They uphold State Sovereignty in a sen
sible form,and with intelligible attributes:
They maintain that tho General Govern
ment derives its powers from a compact
between Sovereign Slates; That these
powers are limited “iy the plain sense
and intention of the instrument constitu
ting that compact', and that in case of a
deliberate, palpable, and dangerous exer
cise of other powers, not granted; it is the
right Sf duty of theSteitcs to interpose for
arresting the progress of the evil within
their respective limits;" that they
have /he right “to judge as well of infrac
lions of the Constitution, as of ihe mode
and measure of redress.”
The e are tho principles of the State
Rights’ Party of Georgia,” the princi
ples of this gazette, \Ve espouse them
because wo find thorn blended with all
the original elements ol our Government;
and because they are admirable in thoo.
ry, and still moro admirable in practice.
We deprecate their antagonist doctrines;
because their promises have ever been—
Consolidation; and their fruits—dissen
l/ons, usurpation, injustice and oppres
sion. Their first ton years’ reign, pro
duced the Alien and Sedition Laws—and
they fell. Their last ton years’ reign,
have brought ihe country to the verge of
civil war; clothed tho President with
dictatorial power, exhibited his troops, on
the march from State to State, in mena

In this state of things, it becomes eve
ry man who has the welfare of his coun
try at heart, to consider what he can do
to redeem her from disgrace, and rescue
her from speedy dissolution. We believe
that we cannot better direct our time aud
labor to this object, than by using our bon
cstendeavors to bting back the peo
ple to the republicanism which they have
forsaken. 1 o this end,we take the State
Rights (Sentinel in charge, and earn*
cslly solicit the aid of all who think with
us upon this deeply interesting subject.
As we believe there is an inseparable
connexion between virtue and happiness,
vice and misery, whether considered in
reference to bodies-politic, or to indrvid
uals, it will be our ceaseless endeavor, to
impress this truth, upon the minds of the
people at large, and to make it, if possi
ble, the leading maxim tho party to
which we belong. All institutions, and
asociations,therefore,which have for their
object tho improvement of he moral con
dition of our fellow-citizens, will find a
warm supporter in the Editor of this pa
per; and all well written essays, ending
to the same object, shall be welcomed to
our columns.
The State Rcghts Sentinel shall be
an independent paper, or it shall cease
to be. It will pay a blind subservience)
to no paity; it will support the intentional
errors of none; but it will not visit the er
rors of individuals upon tho parly, nor de
sert the party,fpr occasional errors.Whon
the party which ft how advocates, shall
depart from the Jeffersonian principles,
this gazette will depart from them.
No pains will be spared to make the
Sentinel instructing and intere-litig to
all classes of readers; though other busi
ness of the first importance, fo’bids me
to promise much for a month or two to
come.
Our printing materials ate entirely now
and well selected, and we are well sup
plied with operatives: we may therefore
promise a speedy and handsome execu

Terms of the State Rights Sentinel
will bo published once a week until the
