Feb 10 18 I NEW MONTHLY riIHE Subscriber intends commencing anew JL monthly publication about the middle of May, entitled the New- York Ladies' Companion, Devoted to original and selected tales, sketches, stories, arts, sciences, amusements, fashions and every department of polite literature. The selections nil! be made with taste and judgment, from the most celebiated and distin guished English, French and German Periodi | cals, on a plan which will be at once agreeable, entertaining and interesting, and at such a low I price, that it can be obtained by every class of i readers. This publication will be of that nature j which will insure its access to every branch of I the community, and all articles will be of amor I al, pleasing and instructive nature. It will be issued on the 15th of every month, stitched in a colored cover, printed on good pa per, with new and handsome type; and contain from 40 to 50 large octavo pages, which will form at the close of the year two uncommon large volumes for the small sum of $3 per an uum, payable in advance; the last number of each volume will be accompanied by a beautil'u engraved title page and index. The work wil| occasionally be embellished with splendid draw] ings and engravings. The advantages arising from the above pub ication will be easily conceived, —containing by far a greater quantity of reading, than could in any other way be brought together, in one form ami in a regular and staudaad manner, which is far preferable to keeping Scrap Books and Al bums or preserving every piece that is a little interesting to the reader; whereas in the propo sed publication, all can be preserved alike and in a suitable style for binding; and thus not only do credit to the library of the Philosopher, but add greatly to the knowledge and amusement of every branch of the present generation. A publication on this plan has never bean at tempted in New-York, although many of a simi lar nature have been long established in our sister cities with great success; —the publisher therefore begs to assure the public, that his ar rangements are such that he hopes will meet the patronage of an enlightened and discriminating community. Several gentlemen of known literary talent, have generously tendered their assistance to enable the Publish r to accomplish his object in commencing the “New-York Ladies' Com paniow" All those splendid sketches that have gained such celebrity in France and Italy, will be trans lated and re-printed in the columns of this monthly periodical. The great range of mate rials the publisher has already in his power, to gether with the assistance offered, will enable him to present to the public such a work as he hopes will meet their approbation,—and he asks only for that support to which the merits of the publication may entitle him. Subscriptions will be received at No. 58 Wai street, up stairs, —where letters may be address ed to the subscriber, (post paid.) Post-Masters and others becoming airents for this work, are required to remit only $2 50 to the publisher for each subscriber. Persons fur nishing Jive subscribers and {forwarding the amount of subscription sls, will be entitled to the work fine for one year. Agents and others are requested to transmit the names of subscri bers by the 20th April, and the price of sub scription on the receipt of the first number, or the second will not be forwarded. Advertisements will be published on the cover, on reasonable terms. WILLIAM W. SNOWDEN. N.Y. March 19th, 1834. COTTON GINS. The Proprietors of this Institution, im pressed with the belief that there is no place in the Southern country, which combines more advantages for a permanent School, are resolv ed to neglect no means to render it in the high est degree useful, and woi thy of publie confi dence and patronage. With this view, they have determined at much expense, to alter and improye the buildings in such a manner, as to afford every.accommodation both to the Teach ers ami Pupils. To those who are acquainted with the location, it is unnecessary to say, that ,the climate is as pure as in any section of the Southern country. The health of the place is proverbial. So far as the advantages of good society may be considered as giving it a claim to public encouragement, it is believed there is no Seminary, which, in this respect, stands upon higher ground. Believing it to be of the highest importance to the pupil, both as respects his moral deportment and literary ad vancement thatjhe should be as much as possible under the immediate tuition of the Teachers, ments have been made, at no small expense, by the subset iber, to accommodate with board, in his own family, those pupils whose parentsand guardians may wish to avail themselves of those advantages. By this arrangement, the Teach ers will be able to devote their whole time, both in and out of School, to the instruction of their pupils. In addition to the branches usually taught in English and Classic Schools, the scho lar may be qualified, if desired, to commence with advantage the study of any of the learned professions. Having bet u many years engaged as a Teacher, in the State, and bis peculiar mode of teaching, having proved eminently success ful, the subscriber deems it unnecessary to make any remarks with regard to his claims to public confidence. Upon this point he would not only refer to. those who have patronized the lottitu tution since under his superintendence, bat aha tootfiers, to whom he has been former!* ka«wa as a teacher.
