far a greater quantity of reading, than could in
any other, way be brought together, in one form
and in a regular and standaad manner, which is
far preferable to keeping Scrap Books and Al
bums nr preserving every piece that is a little
interesting to ti«e reader; whereas in the propo
sed'publicatinn, all can be preserved alike and
in a suitable style forbindint;; and thus not only
do credit to the library ©f the Philosopher, but
add greatly to the knowledge and amusement
of every branch of the present generation.
A publication on this plan has never bean at
tempted in New-York, although many of a stmi
lar nature bare been Jong established in our
sister cities with great success ; —the publisher
therefore begs to assure the public, that his ar
rangements are such that he hopes will meet the
pats iuage of an enlightened and discriminating
community.
Several gentlemen of known literary talent,
have generously tendered their assistance to
enable the Pubiish'r to accomplish his object
in commencing the “ Ntw- York Ladies' Com
panion"”
All those Splendid sketches that have gained
such celebrity in France and Italy, will be trans
lated and re-printed in the columns of this
monthly periodical. The great range of mate
rials the publisher has already in his power, to
gether with rhe assistance offered, will enabU
him to present to the public such a work as he
hopes will meet their approbation,—anil he asks
only for that support to which the merits ol the
publication may entitle him.
Subscriptions will be received at No. 58 Wai
street, up stairs, —where letters may be address
etl to the subscriber, (post paid.)
Post-Masters nnd others becoming agents for
this work, are required to remit only $2 50 to
the publisher for each subscriber. Persons fur
nishing fire subscribers and (forwarding the
amount of subscription sls, will be entitled to
the work free for one year. Agents and others
are requested to transmit the names of subscri
bers by the 20th April, and the price of sub
scription on the receipt of the first number, or

Advertisements will be published on the cover,
on reasonable terms.

RICHMOND
BATH ACADEMY.
THE Exercises of this Institution will be re
sumed under the superintendence of the
subscriber, on the first MON DA V in January
next. The Proprietors of this Institution, im
pressed with the belief that there Is no place ia
the Southern country, which -combines more
advantages for a permanent School, are resolv
ed to neglect no means to render it in the high
est degree useful, and worthy of publie confi
dence and patronage. With this view, they
have determined at much expense, to alter and
improye the buildings in such a manner, as to
afford every accommodation both to the Teach
ers and Pupils. To those who are acquainted
with the location, it i« unnecessary to say, that
the climate is as pure as in any section of the
Southern country. The health of the place is
proverbial. 3o far as the advantages of good
society may be considered as giving it a claim to
public encouragement, it is believe! there is no
Seminary, which, in this respect, stands upon
higher ground. Believing it to be of the highest
importance to the pupil, both as respects bis
moral deportment and literary ad vancement
thalghe should be as much as possible under the
immediate tuition of the Teachers, arrange!
ments have been made, at no small expense, by
the subscriber, to accommodate with board, in
his own family, those pupils whose parents and
guardians may wish to avail themselves of those
advantages. By this arrangement, the Teach
ers will be able to devote their whole time, both
in and out of School, to the instruction of their
pupils. In addition to the branches usually
taught in English and Classic Schools, the scho
lar may be qualified, if desired, to commence
with advantage the study of any of the learned
professions. Having been many years engaged
as a Teacher, in the Stale, and his peculiar mode
of teaching, having proved eminently success
ful, tho subscriber deems it unnecessary t* make
any remarks with regard to his claim* to puMi*
confidence. Upon this point he would not only
refer to those who have patronized the lostitn
tution since under his superintendence, bnt also
toothers, to whom be has been formerlv know*
as a teacher.
