SOUTHERN xWAGAZINE,
A JOURNAL OF LITERATURE, ARTS AND SCIENCES.
WITH much diffidence, the subscriber
yields to the urgent recommendations of
a number of his friends, in offering to the en
tirety unoccupied community of the South, the
publication of a Monthly Periodical under the
above title. He is too well acquainted with the
ill-success hitherto closing all similar undertak
ings, not to anticipate considerable difficulty
and opposition. The truth is not to be disguised,
however inexpedient its expression by an appli
cant for public favor, that there prevails amongst
us a censurable, and as many are disposed to
think, an almost insuperable indifference to
wards the cultivation of a purely domestic liter
ature. The bold and haughty independence we
assume and maintain on all other points, if in
this respect it does not shrink from a competi
tion wiih, is at least satisfied under an indolent
reliance upon the taste and talent of others
Circumstances, moreover, have contributed to
excuse, if not to favor this supinent ss
We shall not, we trust, be accused of presump
tion on our ow»n part, or of disrespect to our
predecessois, in saying, that where in some ca
ses, the latter have too largely drawn upon the
intelligence and leisure-of their readers, and thus
contracted the ciicle of their pattonage, thev
have ia others, with an over-sanguine anticipa
tion, omitted the necessary preparatians to en
sure a vigorous and durable piosecu’ion of their
undertaking. We have a painful and mortifying
illustration of the former error in the late pre
mature discontinuance of one of the ablest peri
odicals of the country—and the inadequacy of
unassisted individual enterprise to supply even
the limited demand it met with, not merely in
the quantity, but particularly in the quality and
the variety required, has been too well tested by
every successive and irretrievable failure here
tofore.
The work now proposed, is happily free from
either of the dangers referred to. Entirely of a
miscellaneous character, it will be addressed to
every variety of taste, without exacting from its
leaders any farther attention than what their or
dinary leisure hours may afford. At the same
time, it will sedulously endeavor to commingle,
in an agreeable and compendious form, the high
er branches of the Aits and Sciences, with the
lighter but not less valued effusions of the Taste
and the Fancy. Ami in all this, it may well
hope for success, from the talent and learning
enlisted in its behalf. Delicacy, however, foi
bids a direct personal reference to the manv dis
tinguished individuals who have taken an inter
est in and are pledged towards its support.
It is now almost needless to say, that the
SOUTHERN MAGAZINE will consist entirely
of original matter in prose and verse, (to which
contributions are respecifully invited,) embra
cing all subjects of general interest and exclu
sive of controversial divinity and party politics,
accompanied with criticisms upon the produc
tions of the day, and notices of the most import
ant passing events.
JAMES HAIG.
At a special meeting of the Literary and Phi
losophical Society, convened on the Bth inst. a
Committee consisting of 'I homas S. Grirnke,
James H. Smith and William Peronneau Fin
ley, Esqrs. appointed to consider the contem
plated Periodical to be edited by James Haig.
Esq., a member; presented the following, which
was unanimously adopted :
“ The Literary and Philosophical Society of
South Carolina, having been informed that a
monthly periodical embracing general literature
and miscellaneous information, is contemplated
to be published by Mr. James S. Burges, and to
be edited by Mr. James Haig—
“ Resolved, That the Society regard such a
work, on account of its miscellaneous character,
as an acquisition to our community, and as well
fitted for the instruction and entertainment of
its readers.
“ Resolved, That the Society approve of the
undertaking—that they consider Mr. Haig as a
suitable person to be its Editor, and that it be
recommended to the members of the Society,
and to all others, who .may be so disposed, to
patronise the same.
“ Resalved, That a copy of these Resolutions
be handed to Mr. Haig, tc be published with his
prospectus, should he deem it advisable.”
From the Journals of the Society.

NEW MONTHLY PERIODICAL.
THE Subscriber intends commencing anew
monthly publication about the middle of
May, entitled the
New- York Ladies' Companion,
Devoted to original and selected tales, sketches,
stories, arts, sciences, amusements, fashions and
every department of polite literature. >
The selections will be made with taste and
judgment, from the most celebrated and distin
guished English, French and German Periodi
cals, on a plan which will be at once agreeable,
entertaining and interesting, and at such a low
price, that it can be obtained by every class of
•aders. This publication will be of that nature
which will insure its access to every branch of
: the community, and all articles will be of a moi
al, pleasing and instructive nature.
It will be issued on the 15th of every month,
stitched in a colored cover, printed on good pa
per, with new and handsome type; and contain
, from 40 to 50 large octavo pages, which will
! form at the close of the year two uncommon
j large volumes for the small sum of $3 per an
; uutn, payable in advance; the last number of
j each volume will be accompanied by a beautifu
engraved title page and index. The work will
I occasionally be embellished with splendid drawl
i ings and engravings.*
lhe advantages ari’ing from the above pub
; ication will be easily conceived, —containing by
j far a greater quantity of reading, than could in
; any other way be brought together, in one form
I and in a regular and standaad manner, winch is
j far preferable to keeping Scrap Books and Al-
I bums or preserving every piece that is a little
[ interesting to the reader; whereas in the propo
sed publication, all can be preserved alike and
in a suitable style for binding; and thus not only
do credit to the library of the Philosopher, but
add greatly to the knowledge and amusement
of every branch of the present generation.
A publication on this plan has never bean at
tempted in New-York, although many of a stini
lar nature have been long established in our
sister cities with great success; —the publisher
therefore begs to assure the public, that- his ar
rangetnents are such that he hopes will meet the
patronage of an enlightened and discriminating
community.
Several gentlemen of knowm literary talent,
have generously tendered their assistance to
enable the Publish, r to accomplish his object
in commencing the “ New-York Ladies' Com
panion'"
All those splendid sketches that have gained
such celebrity in France and Italy, will be trans
lated and re-printed in the columns of this
monthly periodical. The great range of mate
rials the publisher has already in bis power, to
gether with lhe assistance offered, will enable
him to present to the public such a work as he
hopes will meet their approbation,—and he asks
only for that.supp >i t to which the merits of the
publication may entitle him.
Subscriptions will be received at No. 58 Wai
street, up stairs—where letters may be address
ed to lhe subsciiber, (post paid.)
Post Masters and others becoming agents for
this work, are required to remit only $2 50 to
the publisher for each subscriber. Persons fur
nishing five subscribers and the
amount of subscription sls, will be entitled to
