scanty fertility they iiaVc Ibng since exhausted with cachexical Habits, jaundice and dropsy, and a general appearance unworthy ol that be ing whom Heaven has made erect, and turned his visage to the skies. And the squalled slave, in rags and smut, scarcely inferior to his master in mental imbecility and want of bodily yigor, in gaping idiocy, stares at you as you pass, the disgusting victim of both political and natural evH. If you think this picture overwrought, visit the scene, and try a sketch yourself. There art, of course, numerous exceptions; but I paint with a broad brush. As you approach Charles ton, you find old fields, with their decaye I dwel ling*. In which, no doubt, our forefathers figured during the Revolution. 1 thought of their devo tion, and looked upon the bairen desolation with a smile of proud remembrance. Charleston, who could descsibe thee, as the stranger finds thee.full of hospitality, thy daugh ters, the mirrors of grace and modesty—thy sons, of heroic honor! There is a frankness in the manners of this people—an honest candor of demeanor, tempered by the most pleasing polite ness, that is not found in any other city of the Union. The politeness of Charleston seems natural—it lays you under no restraint but to be pleased—unlike the stately ceremony, the studied formality of circles I have seen, which places a plain cit, like myself, in some such predicament as the stocks. Little business is done hert before breakfast or after dinner on the large scale. Business men here, as elsewheie, are pretty much business men—the dull routine of affairs alone employs their attention—no winning graces, smiles or eloquent speeches to shake your stubborn inde pendence and wile away your caution The Jewesses are the folks for that—the smartest shopkeepers you ever saw—l never went into their stores without buying something in my life —-can’t help it. The great desideratum now, is a Public House on a large scale, k- pt as it ought So be. All the establishments here are small, and none of them of much reputation Sup pose, as you have so many good ones in Augusta, you send down the UniLd Stales cr Eagle bf Pheenix, on the Rail Road! A large public house, properly conducted, would be the best speculation now open in Charleston. So for as I have seen, no establishment, at present here, is equal to Jones’ on Broad street, it was there She great English tourist found iced claret find silver forks, which, having just emerged from the then rude, uncultivated West, threw him into such Tax Rail Road.—Our public spirited towns men Mears. Williams, Camak and Shannon, days since from the counties of Oretne and Morgan, where they had been for She purpose of procuring subscriptions to the stock of the Georgia Rail Road Company. Their success in these counties was tiuly grati fying to the friends of Internal Improvements, and places the entire success of the project be yond a doubt. We now look upon the matter as Entirely settled. A very short time will witness the commencement of a system of Internal Im provement in Georgia, which must, at no distant ■day, place her proudly by thejnide of her most ex ■alted and flourishing sister. We understand that a portion of the stock ■etill remains to be disposed of, and would ad -vise all those who wish to vest their funds safe ty and profitably, not to allow the present op portunitv to pass by unimproved, but to come forward'and take hold whilst they have an op portunity,* a short time will place it out of their power to do so.— [Southern Banner. Nomination Extra. —We obserye that the editor of the Augusta Chronicle has placed the name efWm.J. Duane, the "reformed” Secre tary of the Treasury, (the man who wanted time to consult his daddy before be gave Gen. Jackson an answer on the subject of the removal of the deposites,) at the head of his editorial columns, as the standing candidate for the Presidency. We would respectfully suggest to the .editor of the Chronicle the propriety and expediency of adding the following: DAVID CROCKETT, the “Coon Killer;’ for Vice President. The ticket will then “go ahead,” and grin down all competition— Southern Banner. Fatal Accident. —We learn by the New- Haven boat, that at the consecration of the new Catholic chapel in that city yesterday, the front gallery having no centre ruppoit, gave way .and percipitated the whole audience in it to the floor, by w’ ich accident a lad named Hardyear, was instantly killed, and several others severely wounded, among whom were Mr. Hard’ year,of West Haven, Miss Taylor, daughter ol Mr. John Taylor,a daughter of Mr. Daniel Col !in», and Mrs. Hibiman, wife of Deacon Scovil Hiniman. — Com. Adv. * We regret to leain that Mr. Hardyear,of Wesi Haven, who was one of the sufferers at the fal of the gallery of the Catholic Church, diedyes terday afternoon. Mrs. Hinman is in a dan gerovs state. — New Haven Herald. The Madrid Revista Espagnola, of the 25th Uliimo, states, that in consequence of an at tempt to assassinate the Commandant Genera! of Murcia, th<-t < fficer issued the following extiaordinary proclamation, dated March 18: “The criminal attempt to assassinate me io ra y bwn house on the evening of the 17tli, al though not effected, calls for precautionary meas ures, consequently,! fa similar attempt be made on any of the authorities appointed by the Queen, * or'even against any person attached to her cause, I will immediately imprison 30 persons, taken from those most known for their enmity to the Government of her Majesty’ and, after summary trial, 1 will cause four of them to be shot, and the rest transported to the colonies, whatever their station in society may be. It is impossible for the most superficial observ er of the signs of the titnes, not to have drawn from them the irrestible conclusion that toe po litical elemenis of our State have, within (he last six months, Undergone a revolution as gteaf a* It was sudden and unexpected; and we feel it a duty we owe to th‘e public, to scatter any lingering mists which may still surround Os, produced bf t'*is war of elemenis, this breaking np of old * party foundations, and this mingling of extrenfe. hitherto so opposite in the formation of new ones, in order that odr tfeue position may be re vealed, both to those with whom we shall hefe. after act, and to those by whom we may be op posed.
