Glover the supposed mu derer of John R» Wiggins, escaped from the Jail of this place on the night of the 11th inst. A re ward of SSOO has been offered by the Sheriff of Montgomery County for his apprehension. Exertions have been made to learn the route that he took, but as ydt no trace of him has been found.— Mont. (Ala.) Adv. The Boston Commercial Gatetie of the P h inst. saysyesierday was the warm est day of the season. The thermom eter stood al 94 in the shade at 2 o'clock —at the Suffolk office, at 98. We learn that several persons were injured by drinking cold waler; and in some in stances masons were obliged io suspend their operations fur a few hours, so op* pressive was the beat. GT- The glass at the Suffolk office in ’ State-street yesterday, at 8 o'clock, indi cated 86 1-2 degrees;—at 11 o'clock, 98 degrees; at 2, a fraction over 100. Sev eral other glasses stood at 98, at noon. A steam carriage in England, convey ing 20 passengers, travelled 4 miles in 20 minutes, on a common road—bui then, we suppose, a “common road” in Eng land, would be a very uncommon one in the United States. Conundrum.— Why is Commodore Elliott a bad calculaoi? "Du you give it up?” Because ho has missed a Figure. The New York Advocate of the 10;h inst. contains some particulars in relation ito the figure-head of the Constitution.— The advocate affirms that iho deed was the work us a boy, aud adds, — “He had wo accomplice, no assistant. Il was entirely a creation of his own brain, <ond he had never breathed a word of it to any human being. On the eve of the 2d of July, at 12 o’clock, he wont into a «mall boat, with nothing but a saw, two gimlets and a small rope. Ou airiving a! the vessel, he had ibe gieatest difficulty in reaching ibegangway ladder, in which be finally succeeded. The rain was fall ing in tortents, and when he stepped on the deck, no one was visible. He heard the tread of the centre below, but noth ing daunted, he pioceeded tu his woik;— He bored the two gimlets into (he head, aud fastened one end of the rope to them, tfa-e other end he m »de fast to the vessel, lie was two hours in sawing off the body. Thu iron bolt which run through, to keep tie General straight, gave him much diffi. cuhy, as he was obliged to saw all around it. After this was done, the head was fairly lifted off the bar, and lowered into the boat. There another difficulty oc cured. The boat had been left under one oi al io scuppers, and the boy found ii nearly full of water. He was obliged to cake hold of the boat rope, and raised up dre bow, (ill some of the water had run wet, when he g<»t in, and safely reached tfii« shore. The head was taken home, atad although we cannot vouch for the fact, yet we suspect it has been ere this ccnsumcd iu a “Maze of glory.” ‘PARIS, May 27.—M. Berard, theau tthur, and M. Felix Grundy, of the U. S. Where are those who ’fcved their influence to prevent loans of money to the Government in its ut most need! Where ate ail the moral traitors of that gloomy period? Where pre those who thought it immoral fi aud irreligious to rejoice at our victories .aqd.mourned at the defeat of our enemy? '..Where are those who denounced James 'Madison as a tyrant, usurper and despot; and proclaimed that the country would never prosper till he was sent to Elba? Where are the “blue light” gentry, who gave private signals to the enemy te ena ble them to murder our citizens? These 'then are not found in the ranks of the ad *<ni»istratian, they will pursue the present (Chief Magistrate with that hatred to his grave, and when dead their enmity will not cease; they have their reasons for it: he did their friends too much damage at the city of New Orleans, ever to be for given.” COMMERCIAL. [By the North America at New York.) LIVERPOOL MARKET, MAY 30.—Cotton. Our market for Cotton this week has bfeeu lan guid aud the transactions rather limited; prices of the commoner classes of American have rece. ded l-8d to £d per Ibt, and Bahia* have been set ting at a decline of ,|d per II ; other Brazils, Sea Islands, and the better qualities of American are steady at our last quotations. I'he Surats at auction sold briskly and at steady prices. 200 Surats, 30 Maranham, and 2000 American have been taken for export, and 3500 American have been forwarded into the country without having been offered on the uiaiket. The import this week is 2231 bags, and the sales ate 17,870 bags, viz; Extract of a letter received in Charleston dated. • LIVERPOOL, MAY, 31, —Annexed you will find the monthly table of Stocks, Imports, &c. of Colton up to the present time, which shews a higher import of Brazils, with but little other al teration from that of last year, while our stock on hand isabout 50,000 bags less, and the deliv eries to the trade about the same quantity, hi the early part of the month the common quali.ies of American Cotton was comparitvely scarce, and the range of prices qui<e out of proportion. The late heavy imports have, however, brought a very lai ge quantity of low Cottons, on the mar ket, and those too of much worse quality than what we have previ usty received. The conse quence hag been, that while Cotton above 8 1 2d has in cons* qnence of the scarcity of Brazils been in great demand at improving prices, we must quote Colton below that price at fully down from the highest point, and l-Bd. lower than at the beginning of the month; and the much deterioiated quality of what we have lately re ceived, has reduced our lowest quotation beyond the aciual fall in the market. ‘ Our manufacturing districts are favorable; there is a ready sale for both Goods and Yarns. 1 he stock of Cotton held by the trade is reported to be much what it was at this time last year.” Import ano Stocks.
