The very able and scientific manner in which
you have treated the subject, and the clear and
striking- illustrations with which the various
points of difficulty were elucidated, could not
have failed to call forth the admiration of every
one who enjoyed the privilege of being a mem
ber of the class.
They must have been convinced of the im
portant bearing of the science, on the subjects
of mental and moral philosophy, and education,
and the cheering prospect which it holds forth
in the treatment of the insane, —a class of indi
viduals laboring under diseases, too often, neg
lected, simply, because they are not steadily
contemplated as affections of the brain.
You must, also, permit us, sir, to express our
approbation of ihe able manner in which you I
defended the science against the unfounded i ;
charge of leading to the doctrines of Material- i'
ism and Fatalism, —charges which have been
used to frighten many from giving the subject
even a moment’s reflection. To those who would 1
condemn Phrenology without investigating
its claims to their attention, we can only say, i
in the language of a master spirit os the science, i
4> self-examination can alone produce self-convic- > I
tion."
In conclusion, sir, we cannot but congratu
late the friends of the science that so able an ad
vocate has enrolled himself among the follow
ers of Gall andSpurzheim, —one, whose powers
of illustration and delivery cannot fail to give 1
effect to a subject which appeals to the vast field
of nature for facts in support of the principles
upon which it is founded.

subject of general regret, that siifce the discon
tinuance of that able work, the Southern Re
view, there has been no Magazine cuablished
in South Carolina affording a suitdbk mediurn
through which the opinions of our bes\ .writers
might be brought to bear directly and usefully
upon the public mind. It is with a view to
meet this demand that the publication ot thia
Journal is proposed, and that the general and
substantial support of the citizens of the South
is respectfull}’ solicited.
The proposed Magazine will consist of Ori
ginal Communications on Literary and Scien
tific Subjects; of Popular Tales suggested by
historical and local associations; of Poetry,
and Political Intelligence. Its columns are in
tended to afford a vehicle for the free but tem
perate discussion of all questions, which from
their importance, interest or attraction are de
serving of the attention of an educated com
munity. If it shall become, what its nahie im
ports, a Journal of strictly Southern Literature
—if it shall serve to place upon record a true
account of the opinions, feelings, habits and
general tone of thinking of an enthusiastic and
high-minded people —if, under the. enlivening
inspiration of the Gmiiw Loci, and with the ap
proving smiles of the generous and the fair, and
tbe concurrence and effective aid of the learned
and talented men among us, it shall contribute,
in any small degree, to secure for the South
that elevated Literary position to which it is
entitled, and which it is capable of maintain
ing, its design will then be fully accomplished.-
The work will be conducted by the Subscri
ber, assisted by several Literary Gentleffiett
who have pledged themselves t» contribute con
stantly and liberally to its columns, who are in
terested in its success; and who think the pres
ent a favorable juncture ibr the commencement
of such an enterprize. It will be printed in an
octavo form, on fine paper, in monthly numbers
of fifty-six pages each, and will be put to press
as soon as a sufficient number of subscribers
can be obtained to anthot-iJie its publication.
The Journal will be furnished to subscribers at
Five Dollars per annum, payable at the expira
tion of six months from the date of the first
number.
