NATIONAL BANKRUPT LAW.
The subject of a system Of national bankruptcy
will l be evidently, and ably, brought before the
attention of congress, ot their next session—al
though this measure, so fraught with benefits to mil
classes of met! in badness throughout the union ■
failed st the last session, it then had many sble and
energetic advocates. That, a uniform system of
^bankruptcy be formed by the general government
to correct’ the many evils resulting from the di
versity of laws, now in force through, and oper
ating so widely in, the-diObrent states, on the in
terests of the merchant, the manufacturer! farmer,
mechanic, tod indeed all classes of society, poor
and rich, honest and djjhonest, is most earnestly
called for- That pongress possess the power to
pass such fe Isw, from the constitution, cannot be
doubted. It would be absurd to contend that the
power to pass bankrupt laws is reserved to the
states either by the constitution or its amendments.
The‘experience which our national councils have
obtained, since our late war, of the internal re-
.5quiccs of opr country, together with our happy
v\ate of foreign affairs, this moat certainly be hail-
jt\ ass propitious session to have this important
national subject settled, so as to t»e -lex terns.”
