THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH IB, 1819. uisthehhlyg fire:h A dreadful fire happened in this place last night, between 9and XO o’clock. A anv.ll grocery atore on TcICrir't wh-itf, occupied by Mr. J. M. Carter, was discovered to be on Are. Alarm was given by the beat of drums and ringing of the bell;; and the inhabitants repaired very spiritedly to the price of danger. The flames toon spread to the adjoin ing bouses, wi-ieh consisted of wooden buildings, and raged with uncontrorible fury. Very little rain having fallen for Ilia lost month, the bouses caught like tinder The fire spread alung on the river from Whitaker to llernard street; which, n its progress, consum'd all the slore-houses on Telfair’s and Jones’ wharves. Heaven only knows wliern the devouring element would hare stopped, bad it not been for Dolton’s fire-proof range at the East, and Taylor’s, at the West end of ihe city. The wind, which had blown from 3. S. \V. with violence the whole day, seemnl to rise in it* strength as the flames progressed. The .angry elemrnt had obtained completely the asctudancy. Against its devouring career, human efforts could avail but Tittle.—It appeared evident that the whole buddings on tbe riVer, trem Gray & finder’s to Nichols, Dobson & Hills, must he destroyed. It was nearly 11 o’clock, when the fury of the flames began somewhat to abate. Contrary to general expedition, flic wooden store on Anderson’s wharf was saved. Between this and Dolton’s wharf all is desolate and. waste; u i'll a large quantity of merchandize and produce, the property of differ ent persons, are destroyed. The tors of property on this occoiiou, is estimated, vs nearly as can be ascertained, at ainut one lundred and fifty thousand dollars! We hope that the police will enforce the ordinance against every person who had or may hasp gunpowder in their sIoks. There is no knowing the distinction that may be committed, by tbis flagrant outrage of the law.— Offenders ought to be punished. It affords us £reat pleasure to state,>hat no individuals receir. ed any material injury from the explosion—nor have wt heard of but one person having lost hif hfp-ta seaipen who unfortunately fell jnto the ri ver and was drowned. Fortunately there was a sufficiency of water at the* wharves .to admit the hauling out die shipping, otherwise rr.ahy vessels mjist inevitably have been buriit. We do no* know whether there is an ordinance on this sub ject; if there is, it should be rigidly enforce.i by ihe military who are on duty; if not) i: is esaen" Hatty n ceasary that this piaeticc should be pro. hibitecl by law.
