At a- bont 8 o’clock, we called at a house, and asked for a piece of bread, for which* I gave otto shilling and six pende, which Bertrand had given tome. At 9 o'clock we sawacart going to Newark—Bertrand asked leave to get into it. Kite driver gave leave,and we strived at Newark a- bout 10 o’clock. Bertrand wanted to cross the bridge, bnt I had net the courage to do it; and we went and hid' ourselves along the river among the boshes. At 5 o’clock ■n the evening, we touk a small boat, and crossed the river with two sticks—took the roaJ to New -York, and arrived at 9 o’clock at the place where the horse boat crosses, having only stopt at a house on the road to take a small piece of bread. It was too late for the horse boat to cross tbe river; and we took a small boat lying on the what f with two oars; got into it, and crossed the North River. We landed at the place where the horse boat comes in, and there tied the boat,so that it could be found the next day. We went into a cellar where we got snmethirg to eat to comfort our stomachs,exhausted by fatigue and hun» ger. After supfer, Bertrand told methebest plan would be to go to spend the night nith Mr Louis, the rhomiaker, who lodges n the lower pait of the city, and who hail uoarded two months with us. Wc went there, and as he had gone to bed, he told asthatliis landlady would give os lodgings. She did so, and there we spent the uight. The next day, Tuesday, the 2d ol Feb. when I got up, Bertrand told me to go and buy him a pair of shoes, because be had been obliged to cut away his boots, his feet ueiug swelled. He also wanted a pair of pantaloons, a pair of stockings, and a handkerchief. 1 then went and bought two pair of shoes, two pair of stockings, two pair of pantaloons, two pocket hand- derchiefs, one neck handkerchief, and a shirr. Bertrand dressed. We took a cup of tea, and went out; after having given our landlady tour shillings for our bed, etc. We intended to go to change the thoes of Bertrand, that were too small. We stop ped at Mr Louis’, to whom we owed and paid five shillings; and just as we were ready to go out, we were shopped by some police officers. We obeyed without op position, and we were conducted to prisoh. On the way, I threw out of my pocket, first, the two bills of one and tliree thou sand dollars, and the bundle of bills which was my share. Some person picket them up. These, sir, are the pure and exact truths. This is t.ie only instance ot guilt during a life of 30 years. I have by my good and regular conduct, always secured the good will and esteem > all who knew me— You yourself nave witnessed the opinion of captain John Brown, with whom 1 have ived five months and a hall; that of capt. The total amount ot each metal for the eight years stands thus:— Gold : : : 84,920,798 78 Silver : : 59,638,252 59 Copper : : : 330,193 36 Total, : 264.839,244 44 The copper coinage was confined to the years 1814,15 and 16.
