A Society, called the Juvenile Heathen School Society, has beenformed in this city, among the children of Sabbath School No. 1 Its object is to raise money for the education of Heathen children in in India; 50 of whom, may be supported and educated for the sum of 50 dollars. The children who are engaged in forming this society,' "have contributed, ih two Sabbaths, 28 dollars. Some gave up the tickets which they had received as re wards for reciting their lessons: IS scho lars parted with 2266 tickets. The tickets were redeemed with money instead of bonks, which they usually receive. The above sum of 28 dollars, accom panied with a letter was entrusted to the Rev. Air. Fisk, to be forwarded by him, to the Secretary of the American Bnard of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Jeftf.rsoxvillf., (In.) MavS. IX rEll Y.11. 1.HPR0 FKJtEXT. J ffcrSonri'.le, Ohio Canal Monday the 3d day of May 1818. was a splendid day for the citizens inhabiting the ■ *istiks of the -Ino and its tributary streams above the Falls. On this day the direc tors of the Jeffersonville Onio Canal com pany assembled pursuant to previous ar rangements, in town of Jeffersonville and COMMENCED THE GREAT WORK which lias so long been the subject of anx ious expectation, almost unanimously de manded from patriotism no less than from the true interest of the western country. It is Imrdly necessary to say teat the ob ject ot this great undertaking is to procure a safe and convenient passage for boats of every desci iption at all seasons of the year around the Foils of the Ohio. At I2 o’clock the directors of the Canal ftipaired to the spot, and each taking a pado, commenced the excavution. The xampie of the directors was immediately f dlowed with cheers and huzzis by a large number of citizens assembled to witness he interesting spectacle. The regular labourers to a large number employed for the purpose, animated by the great low of feeling and in'erest that pervaded the scene, then commenced liieir opera tins, and the work progressed with spirit never surpassed. A lady, about thr-e in’d-s dis'ant from this town, in eight d v«. from Friday the rtli till Saturday the 15th inst. actually supplied ;» merchant in this place with tire la r gc amount of 14" dozen and 4 eggs; th produce of her own poultry yard, for the same space of tune: and is now willing to make a contract to any extent, for the de livery of S2 dozen every other day. The lady is Mrs. V.-rdier, and the mer chant who received them, is Mr. Thomas Toole, who is willing to vouch for the facts above stated. This is an example worthy of imitation. This industrious matron has thus, in one week, by the single article of eggs alone, cleared the amount of fourteen dollars, se venty odd cents. /XTRRR8 11XG J1XECDOTE. From this interest ing volume, we extract Ihe following anec dote, which we mink cannot tmt ratify our readers—it occurs at page 31S of the velum". Seating myself once upon a log. by the side of an Indian, who was resting liimsell there, being in his corn field, i observed to him that he must be very fond of working, as I never saw him idling away his time, as is »a common witn the Indians. The answer which he returned made considers hie impression on my mind—I have re membered it ever since, ami I shall try to relate it as nearly in ids own words as.pos- sible. “My friend!” said lie, “the fishes in the water and the birds in toe air and on the earth have taught me to work—by their ex amples, I have been convinced of the neces sity ol labour and industry. Kxntrrn xras tried before the Superior cqurt of this county, ibr forgery of Bank noren and acquitted. The Judge remanded him to prison, on an affidavit havirg been made, that he had pissed a counterfeit bill in ChariestJh—an express, was, immediately after his acquital, sent off to the governor of Soutb- Carnlina, who. it is beFieved, has denr.anod him for trial in that state. Under these circumstances. Hunter was ordered to prison, and. after getting in the gaol, gave the slip and mada off" with him self. We shall not attempt to give an opinion re- lative to tlfis aflair, as a committee of council have been appointed to investigate the manner of the escape of Hunter. - Since writing the above,* we understand that Hustf-ti was. last night, re taken, about ten miles from town—brought back, and is now safetj 1 lodged in prison, where he will remain until the governor of Soutli-Carolina is heard from. We have seen documents (hat fully prove to us, that Hunter’s real name is William P. Drury. The Marine and Fire Insurance Company of the city of Savannah, declared a dividend, this day, of 7 per cent, for the last six months. Fish. qVlEK 1JIXTIXO. The facetious Watty Moirison, as he. was commonly called, was intreating the ominanding officer of a regiment at Fort ieorge, to pardon a poor fellow sent to the lalherds. The officer granted his petition in condition that Mr. Morrison should ac cord with the first favor he asked, the favor was to perforin the ceriinony of b ib tismfora young puppy. In the former place, the removal of the cashier of the Branch of the United States* Bank bps been followed by the resignation of James Ji. Huchannan t esq. as president; who is succeeded by John Don*>ell, esq. who has been unanimously elected to 611 the vacancy. United States* Stock has fallen to 95 or 96 at Philadelphia, .owing to the diminished dividend the Bank is expected to make, from failures among its debtors, and from the contraction of its dis counts.
