The wound healed in about oof month; since then he had continued welt until the meriting of the 3d inst at -2 o'clock, when he fel t an uneasy sensation in the part bitten, attended with a weakness like palsy, (as he expressed it) which soon passed through his shoulder into his body /and produced a fited pain in the stomach 'which was very severe at intervals, parti cularly at the approach of a paroxism, and t * was accompanied by general flushings, which were visible iu his face. The first notice he had of any difficulty in swallowing, was in the morning on his way home from the watch; not feeling well, he called in iura glass of wine bitters at i tavern, but made many unsuccessful at tempt« before he swallowed it- At break fast he had much difficulty in swallowing a little coffee and a small quantity solid food. He described no symptoms but the .weakness, flushings, pain in his stomach ^?od difficulty in swallowing, particularly ’fluids; and it was not till the afternoon of the. Sd, that he suspected hydrophobia, at which time he was hied and took a doge of castot oil, which had the usual effect; lie said lie had not slept half an hour the night nefoie we visited him. lie made sevqfal attempts &lswallowing . water when we were present, and succeed- ’ rd in throwiog down onesr tvrotrff spmms- fil, with much conclusive difficulty, but ‘swallowed with more ease a bit of bread that had been dipped into water. The sensation he expressed, as attending these attempts, resembled that of drowning o< smothering. A distressing apprehension nr timidity as to every thing about linn, ap peared to be everpresent, especially when a person coining into his chamber, or on i current of air being admitted, or any ap pearance ol water, «SJ*c. We bled him, he was much alarmed at the nperalion, had a spasm, and observed that he never had beenafraid of being bled ’before. On examining his arm vre found three distinct marks of ihe dog’s teeth,but no vi sible inflammation. He held one hand hard passed on the epigastrium almost con stantly, and said every paroxysm began by a severe pain there, which made him press violently at the time; this hail the appear ance of something spasmodic. He did notappear disposed to injureany person who came near him; on the contra ry lie showed much affection for his wife and r.hil'Jern. We visited him again in fht evening in company with Dr. Otto of this city, and Dr. Baker of Baltimore, and found all the symptoms alaimingly increas ed. Every thing that the time and circum stances would admit of, was done For him, but to no purpose; after passing a night ol unspeakable distress, bring quite exhau-t ad, lie quietly sunk into the arms of death at 7 o’clock this morning; exactly 53 hours alter lie felt the first symptoms of this aw ful and fatal disorder. The faithful add worthy watchman, whose ease we have related, assisted many a long cold and stormy night, to guard oor per sons and property from the danger«if fire, and the hands of the violent; and has at lust fallen a victim to this most distressing ol all disorders, lie died at the age ol tit), leaving a disconsolate family, some ol wliome were dependant on his c-xertioiis tor their sustinence. What would be the state of the public mind, if it were ascertained, that our city Aias infected by a disease certainly fatal in a few days, without any hope of relief by medicine? It is no fiction ol fancy that our present situation is little better than that above deesribed, for we know of no cure fur hydrophobia; we know ol no recoveries; but black hopeless de spair staring every one i:i the face, who be comes flic unhappy subject of it It is necessary to call the attention of >he public authorities to the causes of this deeply interesting subjeet, to every man, woman and child in our city, and its vici nity! Are notour streets and lanes crowd ed "by dogs as useless as they are danger ous and inconvenient, in many of which, doubtless, the infection of hyikrophobia is implant'd, and liable to show its efl'ects tvery moment? Who then is safe in the Jtrcet? or even in his own house with the • door ofen? What child is safe playing about the dooi? Children msy he slightly bitten without the parents ever becoming Acquainted with the fact, till the fatal dis ease makes its appearance. Who could describe a parent’s feelings on such an oc casion? "On Thursday night last, one or the watchmen of the city was attacked by a !ar>e black dog, which he succeeded in beating off. The same night, another watchman was attacked by a cat, which be •Iso escaped from. On Sunday, a woman and child were bit by a dog in the Northern Liberties. The t g was aecured, and confined. On Sunday night, several dogs made an attack t*n a watchman in the heart of the city, who succeeded in beating fli.cnt , with the assistance of another watchmen. Freeman’s Journal. A journeyman shoemaker in Southwark is stated to have been bitten on Mondfly last, by a dog supposed to have been mad. Foe other hands iu the shop immediately attacked and killed thedog. The mercory, in'Faren- heit’s Thermometer, stood, on Saturday at 3 o’clock, at 82; on Sunday, at 35; or Monday, at 88?and this day at one o'clock ABoMIXABLE DETHATIEF. Portland, (Me.) May 29. A wretch by the name of Jacob Coch ran, has, for about two years past infested the county of York, making great preten sions to religion, and as the lonnder of ngw sect, has succeeded in obtaining considerate number tif followers. But having practised among them the must gross enormities, Cocltran, the leader, was at length seized and brought to trial before the supreme court held at York last week. Five several indictments were found against him by the grand jury all for adultery and crimes of a similjtr.nsturc.— He was tried on one of the indictmeuisand found guilty. But he aschnded after the case was given to the jury, leaving his friends who were his bondsmen in the sum of 1800 dollars, to pay the reckoning, and has not since been heard of. Cochran is des cribed as a man under 40 years of age, of ommon size, well built, of light complex ion, and rather sandy hair. He is dressed decently in dark cloatheg, and can put on somewhat the manners of a gentleman. [We have seen a pamphlet, published by a baptist minister ii> New Gluucest giving an account of Cockran and his de lulled followers.—It appears that under the guise of religion, they have committed the most indecent and abominable acts of dultery, in every possible shape human lepravity could devise. One of their eading tenets was to dissolve the ties of matrimony, as suited their convenience- rid a promiscuous sexual intercourse was tolerated by each male being allowed to take seven wives'. It seems Cochran the flight Priest of iniquity, had nearly half his female followers lor wives io the course of his ministration which has been of two years standing. Friday Evening, June 18, (819. EXECUTION. This day, about 1 o’clock, the sentence of the law was executed upon Joatrn Rios, convicted of Murder, at the last session of the Superior Court. The uidiappy man u-as often attended by the ministers cf the Gorpel, who administered those consolations most soothing in a dying hour. At half past 12 o’clock, he was conducted from his prison, attired in the habiliments which was to enshroud him in the grave. On Ins way from the jail to the place of execution, he appeared to be lively: but when he reached the fatal spot, the livid bus of ghastly terror threw a shade over bis countenance, tie ascended the ladder in a most tremulous and faint manner; indeed, he had to be supported after reaching the scaffold. He dis covered manifest symptoms of inquietude at the preparations he saw made for hia death. Hf said nothing on the scaffold; but merely took leave of the Sheriff and Jailer—bidding them a long and lasting farewell. Every thing being ready, the trap was sprung, and the unfortunate culprit was ushered into eternity. He died easy, making but one or two struggles. Ere two minutes had elapsed, life departed; and he, who hut a few min. utes before was in the vigor of life, was now freed from the agonies of death, and the cares and sor rows of the worlj. It was a moment sickening to the heart of sensibility, and must have been dreailfiil to those who feared the uncertainly of another world. Wa understand, that he avowed a day or two ago, that he was prepared to meet his fate; and acknowledged that he was guilty of the crime for which he was executed. The Charletton Conner begs pardon for insult ing the community of Savannah, but lavishes a- huse on us fur defending that community. We feel no disposition to enter into ad scussion with the Courier. Should we bnl-fi a chimney -sweep, er, perhaps we might be smutted. Let the galled jade -wince. STEAM SHIP SA TAJeWAH. The schooner Veaee & Plenty, arrived at New buryport, from St. Domingo reports, that on the 29th Miy, in lat. 27,39, Ion. 70, saw a steam ves sel, which when first seen they supposed to be a ship on fire. They immediately bore away to render relief but soon found tbeir mistake, as the vessel, by the help of her sails and machine, was soon out of sight to the eastward. A letter from an officer on board the United States’ ship Hornet, dated April 19, says—“The Hornet arrived, with Mr. Forsyth, at Cadiz, 14th April. There is very little news: the public mind appears entirely engrossed with atr expedition that is fitting out here for South-America. There are airrady 16,000 soldiers encamped, commanded by gen. O’Donnel, who is of Irish extraction. He is very popular with his soldier, who are, 1 am told, fine looking men, well clothed and fed. There are seven ships of the line, as many frigates, and several sloops of war, gun brigs and schooners lying at anchor doing nothing, while the Patri ots are destroying their commerce.. They are al| in miserable order. The frigate Diana sailed, not long since, on a cruise of three days. She has not been heard at since—it is thought she is taken.
