Milledgeville, April 20, IB 19. To the Printers of the U. Stutes. Gentlemen—In presenting a list of new pi (cos of types, some explanatory remarks may be «-•- ful. The former prices were fixed during a period in vhich the raw materials wire dear, and not tee.!y o be procured, and it is presumed that they had some claim to be considered moderate as, in 1812. Type were more than three per cent low er in. Philadelphia, thus in Loudm ; and no advance in:*de on those prices, during the late war* although existing circumstances would have justi fied the measure. It was considered that ansi* vance would he an actual loss to the primers,-«$ the competition in the printing business bed, be fore that period, arrived at such a point, that the public were sup j ilit'd with printing, at nfc-.rly L’je minimum, and also, that it was probable the pri ces of types would continue some time after tbc return ot peace, and recompense for any advan tage that was given up. Th;s has taken’place. For some time past, types have been loWtredin value, but not in price. ^They have been sold on long and fiequently uncertain credit, which pro duces, to the btller all the eff ects of reduction df price, whilst to the printer who pays it is cf com paratively little benefit. All the advantage iSo5n favor of those who proa ise, but do not perform, as in truth they get types for nothing, and the sol vent printers pay for them. Another objection to this mode of reducing price is, tnat it absorbs tkc seller’s funds, and, no matter how industrious or frugal he msy be, subjects him to ail the inconve niences of poverty. Men who possess talents, economy, industry A. and honor, will sometimes lack money. The cha racters who have just claims to these attribute?, will rarely be at a loss (or friends, and will enter on business with a more favorable prospect of suc cess, when assisted by a moderate, than by an ex tended credit, which is equally within the reach £Y a rival, who, with an ardent disposition lor specu lation and adventure, may have but doublfti claims to reputation lor prudence.
