John is of a very bright complexion, light hair, tolerable straight and rather grey. He is about five feet six or seven inches high, has holes bored in each ear, blue eyes, and on close examination several shot wounds may be f- und about ins thighs, Ac. John is well known shout the city as a lifer, having been employed by the Savannah Volunteer Guards to play for them. An Ordinance To alter an ordinance so far as relate, to the sala ry allowed to the city scavenger. Whereas it is right that the officers of this cor poration should receive a compensation equal to the duties required of them— 1. Be it ordained by the mayor and aldermen of the city of Savannaliin council assembled, and it is hereby ordained by tbe authority of the same, That the city scavenger shall receive a salary th; torn of four thousand four hundred dollars per annum, payable quarterly. 2. And be it farther ordained, That so much pf-tbe sixth section of an .ordinance, passed June The size of the paper is 36 inches by 24: it has been manufactured by Mr Ames, in bis best man ner, and of the very best materials. The design from the pencil of Mr Bridport is executed hr imitation of Bas Reliefs and encir cles the Declaration as a cordon of honor, sur mounted by the Arms of the United States. Im mediately underneath the arms is a large medal lion portrait of general Gsonoa W ashixotox-, sup ported by cornucopia, and embeilishrd mith spears, flags, and other military trophies and emblems On one side of this medallion portrait, is a similar S iortrait of Jobs Hakcock. president of congress uly 4,1776; and on the other, a portrait of Tho mas Jeffeusoit, author of the Declaration of Inde pendence. The Arms of “The Thirteen United States,” in medallions, form the remainder of the cordon, which is further enriched by some of the charac teristic productions of the United States; such as the tobacco and Indigo plants, the cotton shrub, rice, &c. Tbe facsimiles Jiave been engraved by Mr Val lance, who executed this important part of the publication at the City of Washington, where, by permission of the secretary ofwlate, he had the original signatures constantly under his eye Department of State, \Sthdpril, 1819. I certify, That this is a correct copy of the ori ginal Declaration of Independence, deposited at this Department; and that I have compared af. the signatures with those of the-original, and have found them exact imitations. Joust Qcikct Adams. The portraits are engraving by Mr Longacre, from o-iginal paintings by Messrs Stuart, Copley and Otis, and tire most esteemed likenesses. The Anus of the United States, and of tbe sev eral states, have been faithfully executed from of. tidal descriptions and documents in the manner di rected by the most approved authors on the sci ence of Heraldry. It is confidently expected that fliis engraving will be a splendid and truly national publication. The puhlisber thinks be can promise that it shall be ready to deliver to subscribers late in June, or early in July next, at tlx dollars each copy, to be paid on delivery. The engravings will be followedl>y a Pamphlet, containing the official doewnents connected with the publication as authorities, and a list of the subscribers’ names. It was considered, that an ad- ranee would helm actual loss to the printers, ax j the competition in the printing business had, be- 1 fore that period, arrived at such a point, that the public were supplied with printing, at nearly the I minimum, and also, that it. was probable the pri ces of types would continue some time alter the return of peace, and recompense for any advan tage that w.ts given up. This has taken place. For some time past, types have been lowered in valae, but not in price They have been sold on long and frequently uncertain credit, which pro- duces, to the seller all the effects of reduction of price, whilst to the printer who pays it is of com paratively little benefit. AU the advantage is in favor of those who promise, but do not perform, as in truth they get types for nothing, and ilbe sol- vent printers pry for them. Another objection to this mode of reducing price is, tnat it absorbs the seller's funds, and, no matter how industrious or frugal he may be, subjects him to all the inconve niences Of poverty. Men who possess talents, economy, industry and honor, will sometimes lack money. The cha racters who have just claims to there attributes, will rarely be at a loss for friends, and will enter on business with a more favorable prospect of suc cess, when assisted by a moderate, than by an ex tended credit, which is equally witliin the reach <4 a rival, who, with an ardent disposition lor specu lation and adventure, may have but doubtful claims to reputation for prudence.
