THE FREXS. The benefits whichltave resulted tontan- kind, through the medium-of the press, are . known and acknowledged by all who have a just sense of the value and impoiaancc of iuunnn improvement. In a govenintent •'which acknowledges the people to be the the source of all legitimate power and au thority. it is peculiarly and essentially im portant that a knowledge of its principles should be generally disseminated, and well tuidotetoodc wid we know of no means, by which this knowledge can he so readily at-j tained, with little expense and little loss of time, as bv a careful and attentive perusal «f the public papers. newspaper, is in j fact, a concise history of the age in which ivc live. Its columns are not alone devoted to politics. The man who will read with at tention, may .acquire a knowledge of the history, geography, customs, manners and habits almost of every nation on earth, If vicious* anti the intbceni aftd harmless Against the wicked and designing. Butoi all the governments on earth, ours, is ur. questionably the best calculated to promote the prosperity and happiness of a virtuous and intefiige-nt people. Let it, however be remembered, that virtue and intcUigente are the only pledges fjr its cojilir.uancc these arc the main pillars by which it must he -Supported* and wichont which the whole fabric must tumble into ruin. Ferdinand’s motives for procrastinating a decision with Mr. Forsyth, is no doubt to ascertain whether the holy alliance will sup port him against the consequences to be apprehended from his rejection of the trea ty. We do not think as some of our friends do, that Ferdinands brother legitimates will espouse his cause in a war with the United States. Hut, even, if the holy, al liance shoulfl determine differently, we are persuaded that our govermnent will not he driven from its grounds, by a fear of conse quences, so long as they arc guided by the clearest principles of justice and right. England knows full well the nature and justice of our claims against Spain—she should therefore rather urge her to to what is right than to urge her in that which would be palpably wrong. Suppose it might possibly conflict the in terest of Great Britain that Florida should be ours—arc we to knuckle to Ferdinand and relinquish our just claims on the Span ish government? are we to leave our south- he has a mind st.ssccptiblc of improvement, j cm frontiers exposed ro savages and amor lie may treasure up a fund of knowledge, I savage banditti of Arbuthnots and Ambris- whir.h will contribute much to the his ow: happiness, ami which will essentially quali fy him for becoming useful to the rising generation. Where is the father who can !>-. so stupid an insensible to the benefits result ing from the improvement of the mind, as tc be willing to deprive his children of the opportunity of reading a newspaper It is to be feared there may lie some in stances of the hind; but it is to be hoped those instances are few. For the citizens of a republican govern ment, to remain ignorant of the laws and proceedings of that government is inexcusa ble, nay crim hud. All our most important Civil officers are elected by the suffrages of the people, and if the people pay no atten tion to the conduct and proceedings of their beblic agents how in the name of common .per scare they to judge, whether they' are capable, faithful ru-.d honest, in the discharge of tfieir several duties? are they to enquire of some of their more industrious and cun- niug neighbors? They must do so, or rc- xnain in total ignorance: and .cannot a man with half an eye six:, that he is liable to be deceived and imposed upon by that method o: acquiring information. Surely wc ought .never :o trust to such means of information- when we can obtain it from a more correct and disinterested source. It is our duty to read and examine for ourselves, judge for ourselves, and not pin our faith upon the sleeve of any mail. It is tho policy of des potic cove mn.cuts to disccuragemental im provement, and to keep die people in the most profound ignorance: but it is the poli cy, the, security and salvation of republics, to diffuse information among all classes of citizens. In a despotic government, the people are ruled by the strong arm of pow- rr; but in a republic, they cun only be go verned by conciliating their affections, and convincing their judgments of the proprie- k ty and justice of the laws, to which they are to bo sc jeet. Hence arises the abso lute necessity of a general diffusion of knowledge- < o wc hope tu-perpetuate the blessings of national liberty, wlvich we now enjoy. Nothing but ait enlightened and virtuous ■ponul lion, can save our republic from swift end certain destruction; and our go- iv( ricncnt once at end, anarchy follows of ■co-'tse—end to fuarchy very readily and naturally- stuc.eds tyranny and despotism. T! is by ignorance, or neglect of duty, may he sudden!'- changed, from citizens of a fr< c governiuer.t, >o toe slaves of a despot. It is the doctrine of tyrants ;ha*.kings reign by divine tight.
