Clinton’s motiv es of personal interest—and see how he has been rewarded—sacrificed . to make room for one of the true junto stamp; . because he would not come into the . detestable views of the u M<tgnli* JtupoUn ” ' It is an old saying that with an unprincipled ■ Ariw, the Aear* is sick, and the whole body txijjf be cornipL jiuch will he the casc 'rith Attune a/iunnistration of flw-Vork. until De- ► witt Clinton is sent into “dignified retire ment.” But the recent treatment of Daniel D. Tompkins caps the climax of Clintonian 'Infamy. This patriot, now holding the se cond office in the gift of the people of the United Stales, was governor of the great state of New-York during the war.' At that • time he sacrificed health, comfort, conve nience and fortune for the good of his coun try—indeed he was in every place where dut y called him; and, when the. credit of the governivicut was injured by the efforts of a monied aristocracy to destroy i>, determined that works of defence should not stop Tj# ipkias hoi-rowed large sums of money on private security, and in fact laid his ali at the mercy of the government on a final se tlcmcnt. A depreciatyd currency, the hur ry and consequent confusion attending ex penditures at the moment when invasion ■was anticipated, cncreascd the embarrass ments. The consequence was, tin-accounts of Tompkins were not adjusted, arid Iris ene mies had marked him as a “public default er.” The last legislature of New-York, a majority of whom were politically opposed to Governor Tompkins, in the true spirit ofjustice, passed a law for his relief, allow ing him a certain per cent, on the inoties which passed through him, at leas! equal to the depreciation, while in his own hands-, *nd directing the eontplrol'er of the state to settle and balance the accounts between the Governor and state on that prin ciple. Tho meaning of this act of llu Le gist ere was soT unequivocal that on submit ting it "u six or seven of the most eminent lawyers in the state, they unanimoualy de cided against the comptroller’s opinion.— AM th>s however, was to no purpose—the comptroller, without any pretensions to le gal knowledge himself, f: unsupported bra single law character, adheres to nisewn con struction—at .d the ncgociation ends exactly where it began. One would suppose that Mr. Tompkins might he permitted to escape the rap,c of party; and above all the ingrati tude of his countrymen. llut not so. He is denied that justice from N. York which its meanestcitzcn daily receives, and fornooth- er earthly reason, that wc can conceive, that that sonic base political project may he ef fected. The fact is, the devoted friends of Clinton fenr the popularity of Tompkins.— The people look to him as the next repub lican candidate for the place Clinton now holds. It is therefore necessary, to sub serve the views of Clinton, that the vice president should be mined in his pri vate fortune, and that he should continue to be represented a ‘•public defaulter.” This is no doubt the great politic.".! purpose that is calculated to be obtained—nothing more or less ihar> to holster up the character of one man, at the expense of the reputation of another. It is preposterous h owever to suppose that a scheme like this can in the present instance succeed. Thr time has 'arrived when the great body of the nation duly appreciate the value of Such men as Daiyiel D. Tompkins during the late. The contrast betw een him and certain New Eng land governors in the times that tried anu proved men, is now seen without an eye of prejudice. Ail admire and command the ^onc, al! detest and reprehend the others.— ; He was not when die enemy were thun dering at our gates, toasting the “golden davs of our commercial prosperity.” The people of the state of New-York too weil understand the real character of Mr. Tomp kins to believe on slight grounds, any thing prejudicial tohis character and>vcventure to assert that in a few months they will rise in fhemajestyoftheir strength and put down those political jugglers who hvvc dared to reproach the character of a most meritori ous public, officer. 13 13 50 Oil do. do. do. with gvognphy and I. s- to y, 31 50 4th do. <lo. do. with d-jiv-infr, &<5. 3 - il lo'h-s tr ends 6> : the support '- The subscribers are now opening a variety of c ^em e tw 1 tu.j,e^n U *-f /SeawnaHe Article;, T’ which, with t3iose on board the strips Ogletho pe, Emily, and 6co gito, riowoftthoi ft um .Liver pool, ivL'! make tliefvrsso truent of Woolen, worsted,Cotton ^ AKn LINEN GOODS, TKIT ASU tXTOSlVK, ar.d will be sold ut a reasonable advance for cot ton O'undoubted pape:.
