The doctor gives the r.reference to oil of viterol as more easily attainable than the oxymuriatic, which how*- ever, he esteems tiie best of all. Nitric and muriatic acid, though not so good, he considers assufficiciit for almost ail cases. The following is . the mode in which tiie acid is to be anplied:—Defend the neigh boring parts to that bitten with whiting or scraped chalk, first made into putty-like con sistence with sweet oil. Having now fenc ed round the tom or bitten parts, .nstanllv apply the acid in its undiluted state.and keep h there as long as it may be judged safe; anAimmediatclv after apply spritsdt wine, brandy,.rum, or gin; hut prefer ether to all these. The District /tanks.—The charters of the banks in the District of Columbia will eypu-e on the first of January, 18-21, ex cept that of the hank of Columbia. It is cer tain that these several charters will not be renewed bv congress; even iftiie stockhol ders were to request it. But,.it is believed that the stockholders themselves, have no. Such wish. AVImt, then, wifi or ought to be done on the subject? These questions Were present' d to the consideration ofthe banks last winter. The prevailing idea was that the number, but not the capital, of the banks should-be redtlced: and that this might be most readily effected hv consolidating several hanks into one: so as to have “wobanks in each city and town in the District. But the accomplishment of tiiis object, feasible, as it appeared, was con sidered to tic full of difficulties. I he bank had not, all, the same opinion of the valneof. tlicir stock, or ofthe security bf their loans: and, ir> short, various objections were raised. The consequence was, if we are rightly in formed, that the banks did not fully agree oti any plan. In tiiis state of affairs, the chairman of the committee on tiie district of Columbia, in the house ol representatives, brought in a hill regulating the banks in the district, founded oe the idea above mentioned. The attention of congress, however was so milch occupied si ith ether matters, that the .bill was not definitively acted ujvoft. _ . The near approach ofthe ensuing session ofcongress has again called the public atten tion to the subject. Whatever course is to. lit- pursued will probably be then determined.
