Spain, mbit inflict a wound from which it will not speed-

infallibly bring upon himself nd his nation.
FRTENDS OF THE NAVY! ,
Who would suppose that the recent indignity offered
to our flag, and the flogging and mitnler of our seamen
had already acquired an athocate in thig country! yet the
fact is no less singular than true." The sagacious editor
of the Charleston Courier, in a prophetic strain, says,
“we shall probablv soon hear that die second [alluding
to the Spanish aggression] was OCCASIONED by the
Spaniards .MISTAKING the FIREBRAND for a CAR-
TllAGENIAN PRIV ATEER-.” .and this opinion is tot-
lowed by an extract of a'letter from a gentleman in ,
Ncw-Orleans, to his brother in Charleston, under date
17th ult. informing, that, after the Firebrand s/mick her
colors, she was ordered out of the Spanish waters, some
of her crew .flogged, and turwd adrift. Now, who can
believe the above.quotation was the opinion ot Mr. Vs 11*
lin rion? Had the Spanish comm nder mistaken il\e Fire
brand for a Carthagenian, would he not, upon perceiv
ing the error, have, made un immediate apology, instead
ofinflicting corporeal punishment on some ot the crew,
and afterwards turning them adrift? But it is impossible

the su wishuous and cruel ideot, who sit# on the throne

one ‘ kind of indignities. Afterwards, at Havana, our
seamen were ignominiouslv driven from their barks on

been taught to venerate and consider the greatest s >1 ice

it was’ determined to squeeze the last drop of Spanish
indignation into the chalice. In September last, a little to
the west of the B.*ze,ihe United States’ vessel Fire-
brand, was fired into and captured by a “Spanish royal
aauadron,’ 1 a-numher of her crew killed, some of the sur
vivors flogged and afterwards turned adrift, and her coni-
maniier told bv the Spaniards, that he should not cruise
in their muster’s waters, (meaning the gulf of Mexico.)
This infringement of oar national and natural rights was,
undoubtedly, perpetrated under guise ot the Spanish
blockade (issued last winter) inhibiting our shipping

DELAWARE ELECTION.
We hare -the satisfaction of presenting to oiir readers
a statement of the votes given in at the late election.
One of the republican candidates is elected, and the other
has a majority over the unsuccessful federal candidate.
At the previous election of representatives to congress,
the federal candidates were elected by a majority of
more than 1000 votes. “How are the mighty fallen.”
While we congratulate our friends on this partial
success, we are fully convinced that to a remissndSs of
duty on the part of the republicans, and not to his popu
larity, t'e successful federal candidate is indebted for
his elect.on. . *

CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION..
Since our last, we hav.e been politely furnished witJt •
returns from eight counties. From the statement in this
day’s paper, the reader will perceive that it is highly
probable. Georgia will have an entirely new representa

counties to be heard from.

Prince George's county will give Mr. Herbert a majority of

In the Montgomery district, particularly in the county
so called, there has been a severe struggle, not between
the republicans and federalists, the fi rmor being greatly
out numbered in that county; but between two sections
of the federal party, tile- violent and moderate. Federalists.
