^ C ci Us accomplishment must be somewliat doubtful; I
mt fer any undertaking, abundance of men can be ob-
r ned m the adjacent nations. Europeans, Africans and |
Asiatics if weil paid, or given a prospect of plunder,
will fight as desperately under the “red cross” as they
ever followed the “crescent” of An Bev, Djezzar Pacha,
or tli Pashaw. However the presence of a considerable
Rribsh force would always be indispensibie, as well to
sel exuit.ple of obedience as to enforce it.
To die attainment of this end we may, in some degree,
assign the indifference hitherto evinced on the part of
y „ a aa( l for the occupation of Barbary. Were she to ac‘

T.ie intrepidity with which the assailants sustained the

Mr. Willi cm Burdick—Sir, I have just
received the following from a gentleman of rep-
utat.ou, and hasten to give you*the particulars.
Yours, Ac. Francis Douglas.
•‘We are informed by a gentleman from Lu-
bec, that on or about the 1st inst. several Amdhi
Ciu lisliermau in cliebacco boats, being engaged
on the banks, near the island of Grand Me,tan, a
n i nner ot boats irom the island were sent to
d ve them from the ground. The American
perceiving the approach of the force thus put in
requisition against them prepared to repel the
islanders by a determined resistance, and oblig
ed then to retreat to land. Being exasperated
at this repulse, the inhabitants immediately sent
to t lie Maine tor assistance. A revenue cutter
accordingly was procured, which, on her arrival,
•ordered tne ds.'iermaii from the coast and dis
persed them. After an absence of some time,
tuey again returned, and
occupied their oid gi nun,I, 4
fisiung. The isiande s, discovering this, at
tacked them a second time: out being unable
fo withstand tiie resistance of a fishing squadron
tfiiey broke and made for shore, tiie tisnermen
full pursuit. On their landing- tiiey were to--
lowe.i intn tiie woods, where a skirmish ensued,
and several were kiiied “n both sides.'’
