UNITED STATES’ ARMS.
The frequent occurrence of a shameful traffic,
carried on by individual*, who received, arm*,
during the late war, from captains of volunteer
and militia companies, but who bate since either
left the military beats in which they redded, or
separated themselve* from ther corps in which
they were enrolled, demand* the severest anim
adversions—we mean the disposal of United
States’ muskets at auction. It it » breach
of trust of a much worse nature than
kinds of theft, because the individual* from
whom the arm* were obtained are bound for
their reproduction, and in defalcation of which,
they must pay the price of them out of their own
private funds; beside*, these weapons, when sold,
are usually carried from the place, leaving the
citizens,in cases of emergency, without the ip'oans
of defending themselve* and their families.
This certainly i* a serious evil, and is daily
encreasing. It behoves, therefore, the public
at large to prevent this shameful and dangerous Making in eight shoe*

practice. We would also advise such auction-
eers as have hitherto given it countenance, by
disposing of tire articles alluded toil sale, to re
peruse their commissions, and see whether they
are authorised to offer at public vendue, the
United States’ property, without having first ob
tained permission from some lawful agent of the
government: ancf if not, whether they have not
become liable tu legal prosecution. This is gi
ven as a cautionary notice. It ia hoped that
persons who may have areas belonging to the
United States, and who do not nowlbelong to
uiiliha or volunteer corps, that they will forth
with return diem to the commander* from whom
they received them.
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.
The subscription for this onperb National
Engraving, is daily inc reasing, at thi* office,
and throughout the Union. Those desirous of pb
taining it, are requested to call and examine the
proposals, or forward their names to the Editor
ofthe Refublicak, as soon a* convenient. A let
ter from the intended publulier, ai Philadelphia,
which we received a few day* unci*, lays, “I
pledge myself to you, that the Declaration of In
dependence shall be the most splendid publics-
t ion which ever has issued from the American
Press, and shall in every particular equal, if not
exceed, the plan laid down in the proposals.”
GENERAL SCfltrP.
We learn that majar general Win field Scott has ob
tained i furlough from the nr department, for die Mr.
rose of visiting his n tire slate; and that he exited* to
be ir. Richmond about the t5th of December From the
popularity of the general with tie officers of the ai mv,
and the universal wish that a protocol man should he
placed at the head of the department, it is expected
that the office of secretary at war will he offered to him
