Variation nf the Compass.—A captain
Bain, of the British navy, has lately pub-
'lishcd an essay on the several Variations
of the compass and their causes. One va
nation which has lu>herta escaped naviga
tors is noticed by captain Bain, and which
is caused by the attraction of the vessel on
board of which the coinpass is placed.
This variation appears to be very impor
lant, as a vessel in venturing by the op
posite course will arrive at a very differ
ent point from which she set out; even in
the short distance of ten miles. Tins va
riation differs according to the size of the
vessel and her cargo; but at lea*t always
■amounts to several degrees*.—Ful. Reg.

At the late tenn of the supreme judicial
court ofthis town, six ynung men, belong
ing to Bolton, in this county, were indicted
for a riot, and pleaded guilty. The rir.g
leader, Samuel Warner, was sentenced to
imprisonment in the county jail lor six
months, and the others for three months,
and to pay costs qf the prosecution. The
facts of this transaction, are as follows, viz:
A young Indy belonging to Bolton, in the
month of'July last, was engaged to be mar
ried to the brother of Warner, who being
apprehensive that if the marriage should
take place, his paternal interest would des
cend to his brother in exclusion of hiuiself,
determined to prevent it. Actuated by
tlie»e selfish ami depraved views, he cir
culated report* unfavorable toiler charac

persom to unite with him in the execution
of a most barbarous and wicked scheme
They accordingly assembled one evening
way laid her on her return home, placed
her on a rail, and Carried her the dis
tance of a mile and a half, she at the same
time making all the resistance in her pow
er, and uttering tlje shrieks of. terror which
wuuld have melted the hearts of er.y body
but luffians. In tnc course of the affray
she fell once from the rail, which was car
ried shoulder high, and experienced
severe, shock. She was again replaced —
The injury sustained by her was so great
tli.it site was immediately confined to her
bed, and lor some time it was considered
duuotful whether she would survive. She

considerations wi'l byno means excuse,an
hardly palliate conduct distinguished by
such strong murks of brutality and vi>

as mild as could have been cons: tantl
with the circumstances of the case.
