Gcu. Scott left town this morning en route, for
Washington. IIo spont last night at tbo Astor,
nnd was visited by a largo number of our most dis
tinguished citizens. Tho old General is looking
exceedingly well, notwithstanding his oxtended
tour. He was greeted with groat enthusiasm both
on his arrival and departure.
Tho Fair of tho American Institato at Castle
Garden is crowded Uaily, though there nro very
few now features this yoar. A good many of tho
old stand bysaro to bo seon which merely receive
tho passing glanco of an ancient acquaintance and'
are left for more interesting novelties. Tho Indies
are in attendanco in great numbers in tho afternoon
and find it a very convenient place to criticise each
other’s dresses nnd meet their Beaux for tho purpose
of a slight flirtation. Tbo machine room is per
haps the moat interesting department of tho cxhibl-
tion and contains many things of real merit, promt-
nont among which is Paine's patent rail-car venti
lator. By moans of air injectors placed in tho top

Halifax, Wednesday, Oct 20.
We havo accounts from Prince Edward's Islands
of a tremendous gale there on tho 15th. A great
number of vcssols wore wrecked, nnd twelve sunk at
anchor with all hands on board.' Tho galo was
also very sovero at 8ydnoy, N. S., and a number of
vessels were driven ashore.
Numerous vessels were also drivon into Sandy
Cove, and soveral wont ashore.

" Nearly all the Nova Scotia fishermen are de

Mb. Corwin.—Tho Committco appointed at the
last session of Congress to investigate tho connec
tion of Mr. Secretary Corwin with tho Gardiner
claim before the late Board of Commissioners un
der the Mexican treaty, havo mado thoir report, in
which Mr. Corwin is exonerated of all blame in
tho premises. This is a gratifying result, although
it is nothing more than what was anticipated both
by tho friends of Mr. Corwin and the public at
large. It is tho more gratifying that the present
decision has been mado by a Committeo composed
of a majority of hli political opponents. Two of
the three members who signed the report (Messrs.
King and Howard) are Democrats and ono (Mr.
Chapman) a Whig. Of the two absent members,
one (Mr. Johnson) is a Democrat, and the other
(Mr. Goodrich) a Whig.
It nppeats by tho testimony, that Mr. Corwin
sold out oil his contingent interest in this claim, as
well as in more than thirty others before the same
Board of Commissioners, in which he was engaged

Mr. E. C. Roberts, of Plymouth, Wayne county,

Iho Exhibition will be opened, In the city or Now.York,
on the 2d (lay of May, 1833. The Municipal Authorities
havo granted to then tho uso or Reservoir Square, and
they are proceeding to trcct thereon a building worthy
