tTbf pailn Iprrss_ City Printer —Official Paper LARGEST CITY GMCt’LATION SATURDAY MORNINH M»reb The Coquette in Church. The following, »«"» “* ,rom ,he f * r We*t, i< not quite es reverential ft* •* might be, but the Terse* »re l>r*»J enough, for once, to servo es en excuse : It is sadly sinful, I grunt, TANARUS» be gssing »t her still, While tho organ is pealing the chant, But I cannot turn it l will. The? say there are angel* ever Who dwell In the h,3y place. And I can't help wondering whether One lurks in that radiant face. So, tho’ I have opened my book, •Tis useless trying to read ; For what, think you. ean 1 do but look As those sweet lips follow the Creed ? When the prest, in hisTsnowy dress, Pronounces the Litany grand. I'm wishing that I were near to press That dainty, white, dimpled hand. And when from my knees I arise. O’er the gold edged book of prayer I see a sparklo of starry eyes, And a shimmer of golden hair. The priest says, Up there all is lore; And my thoughts will wander so From tho heaven he points to above To this little heaven below. Oh ! Sunday's a blessed day, And blest the church where I met, Where I watched her read, and sing, and pray, Mv beautiful little coquette! /found Table. [From the Savannah Advertiser.] Wit and Humor. The best nuts'ers of the art are grad ually dying out. Capt. Derby, better known as “ John Phoenix,” one of the inimitable and unapproac.mhle writers ot'this generation, died same time since at his station on the pacific coast, and now we hear of the death of Charles F. Brown (Artemus Ward), who crossed the water to delight the people of Eng land, and then died among them. Ar temus was a practical printer, and showed his appreciation of the craft by his will, in which he leftal! his property to his mother, tor her use during life, and at her death it is to be devoted to founding a ' printer's asylum in New York. His property is estimated at over SIOO,OOO, which, if judiciously invested, will afford relief to many an indigent brother of the craft. The original Jack Downing (Seba Smith) is, we think, still living in Maine, bat the man who took up the title after Mr. Smith dropped it, and wrote some of the most pungent criticisms on the government and its acts, departed this life a few days since in New York. “ Jonce Hooper,” as his friends called him, the author of *• Simon Susrgs,” is another one who is missing when the roll is called. No one looking at him would think that so much fun laid under that apparently solemn exterior. He looked and acted like a preacher ; but, in company, he would sometimes un bend, and then the boys enjoyed theiu _*elres. As editor of a country paper in Alabama, and afterwards managing the Montgomery Mail, he made troops of friends, who regretted his early death, and still cherish the memory of J. J. Hooper, who was decidedly the best humorist that Alabama has produced. The Itev. Judge Longstreet, author of “ Georgia Scenes.” is, we are pleased to hear, still in the enjoyment of good health at Oxford, Mississippi. We hope he may live many years yet ; and when he is finally called away, fromJeaitli, that it will only be to exchange the trials and troubles of this sublunary sphere for the enjoyments of the right eous, to whom it will be said : “ Come up higher.” C. H. Smith, the original “Bill Arp,” has become “reconstructed,” and settled down at his ranche, in Rome. He will write again, sure, for lie is one of the irrepressible kind. “ Sut Lovengood,” alias George W. Harris, formerly Postmas er at Knox ville, Tennessee, has let his pen lie idle too long, We don’t know where he has located, but hope soon to hear from him. Col- W. T. Thompson, the author of “Major Jones’Courtship” and several other humorous works, which have taken a high place in the standard literature of the country, is still living and flem ishing, and we hope ere long, to see some new productions from his pen now too long unused. We now turn towards the Southern extremity of the country. George Mc- Knight (Asa Hartz) has written many good pieces, but it is unfortunate that he writes so seldom. After the death of Jos. Brennan, of the N. O. Times, he holds the first place in that section. He is a printer, as in fact, are most of the good writers in the world. Going from one extreme to the other, we find in Boston the rotund and go and natured B. P. Shillaber, the original Mrs. Partington, who lias done perhaps more than any one else to dispel the blues. He is another typo, and the fattest one in the country, excepting Bill Daggett of the Charleston Courier. The Abmi.ess and Legi.ess M. P An English paper says Mr. Kavutiah, the armless and legless M. P., irora Ire land, excited great curiosty on his first appearance in the House, on the Oth instant. The honored member entered the House from the direction ol the speaker's private apartments, seated in a.library chair, the mechanieistn of which is so contrived that he can wheel him with case to any point he wishes to reach. The large copy of the Testament used in administering the oaths to mem bers wag managed—one cannot use the word handled—by Mr. Kavanagh with out the least difficulty, and he wrote his name with as much quickness and ap parent ease as any of his fellow mem bers of Parlaiment. The process was as follows: The Clerk handed to Mr. Kavanah a pen with the handle of the length to which he is accustomed. The honorable member clasped the handle betv.e .-n what represented his arms, at and steadying it by putting the pen into h s mouth, guide I the p-o over the pare! - ment with singular fluency and steadi ness. A Woman Did it. —It seems that the women ure at the bottom of c\erything that is good. The New York Times, speaking of the bill now before Con gross appropriating a million dollars to relieve the distress ol the South, says : “it is duo to the ‘truth of history’to say that the springs which have brought about this noble result were set in mo tion by the gracious genious of a wo man, Mrs. Jessie It. Fremont, to whom also we are indebted lor the con tribution of a national ship, the Dum barton, now loading at this port with stores for the imediule relief of the Southern Staled.
