General ROBERT E. LEE, General JOSEPH E. JOHNSTON General G. T. V. BEAUREGARD, Lt. Gen. JAMES LONGSTREET, Lt. Gen. WADE HAMPTON, Lt. Gen. DICK TAYLOR. Maj. Gkn.WM. MAHONE, Maj. Gen. ETHEL BARKSDALE, Maj. Gen. CHALMERS. It is of men like these that the Con stitutionalist says: “ Their genim for solving vexed ques tions oj State is not in the highest condi tion of intellectual health or ingenuity. ■' Because they presume to recommend to the people a prompt and hearty cooperation in reestablishing the politi cal position of the States upon the BASIS OF TIIE LAWS OF CONGRESS, thej are thus taunted with imbecility. Writing vs. Fighting Generals. It is positively as good a farce to rend the criticisms of those complacent gentlemen who chance to control the columns of some of our newspapers, upon the views of those honored military leaders who have urged their fellow countrymen to accept the Congressional mode of reconstruction. These men may be good fighters, but forgetful of the tate of Geu. Scott and his hasty plate of soup, they have made a great mistake in rushing into print, says oue. They are excellent models of heroism, but ibeir minds are not in such training os to evolve correct maxims of states manship, says another. Their inten tions are good, and we honor them for it, but regret the result of their first political essays, says a third. We regard General Longstreet s advice as eminently wrong—General Beauregard’s logic is equally untenable, says a fourth. Who are these sage intellectual giants, and oracular custodians of states manship, who, with onq, complacent dash of the pen, thus annihilate such pigmies as Generals Lee, Longstreet, Beauregard, Wade Hampton, Chalmers, and others? Are they men who in scholarship, .s&rperience in civil life, intellectuajVjjgaJjture, good judgment, or any of the qualities which command attention and respect, are at all to be com pared with those sterling patriots who have lent their honored names to the good work of reconciliation ? We trust we hold in proper regard the influence ol the press, and estimate for their lull value the pergonal worth and literary attainments of all our edi torial brethren. Some of them are men of learning and experience ; others are clever essayists, very fair poets, and most excellent fellows withal; but there are few of them to whom the public will look for advice or counsel in preference to those eminent gentleman who are the objects of their criticism. Most of those who are most intolerent toward all who differ from them, are no more to be compared with Lee, Longstreet or Wade Hampton, than “ Hyperian to a satyr,” or the blazing sun-light to the feeble g’are of a lightwood knot. And yet they proffer counsel to their seniors and superiors with a sang froid which seems to say— “ I am Sir Oracle, When I ope my mouth let no dog bark.” The Shoe Finches. Our neighbor over the way, whose company is so select that five hundred dollars bonus is the price required of such ns may desire to become an asso date (a high price to be sure, but, still, it is gratifying to those in need to know that ils favors are for sqle), seems to be very uneasy and fidgety because the course pursued by this and many other Southern journals is freely endorsed and sustained by a large majority, if not all, our distinguished military lead ers. Hear him : Ihe editor of the New Orleans Times has succeeded in trapping another dis tinguished General into perilous episto lary writing. General Henuregard has followed General Longstreet in a written declaration of sentiments, and like General L., prefaces his opinion with Ihe candid acknowledgment that he knows little about the subject cboseu for discourse. These noble men do not admit that they know little aoout the subject chosen for discourse—but that they do not claim to be politicians, and there fore speak of the great public question in the same straightforward and distinct language they would use in the exercise and performance of their profession as diers, or iu their present capacity of distinguished citisens occupying im portant business positions. Gen. Beauregard opens hit letter as follows: Dear Sir Yon bare done me the honor to cell for my opinion relative to the action of the Sooth onder the Military bill. Having seldom taken •nv part in politics, I do not feel well qualified to advise on to momentous a question; nevertheless, as the same desire to obtain my views has been manifested from various quarters, I shall not shrink trcia the responsibility ot expressing them, in the hope that they may tend to quiet the public mind, so justly alarmed at this mo ment. It is the advice end opinion of great men, who have seldom taken any part in politics—that we need now. The article in the paper referred to, closet with this heavy opinion: We regaid Gen. Longstreet’s advice as eminently wrong. Gen. Beauregard's logic is equally untenable. One ot the most unfortunate matters incident to the present condition ot the South is, that these letters should ever have been dragged before the public. It is no less deplorable that they should be couched in language which cannot dignify the writers with additional laurels. Or, in other words, “ because see do not agree with Longstreet, Lee, and Beauregard, therefore, their genius for solving vexed questions of State is not in the highest condition of intellectual health or ingenuity S f ecial Notices. I BEG LEAVE TO CALL THE ATTEN TION of the public to this wonderful Steam Engine, which is cheaper, lighter, less intricate, occupies less space, consumes less fuel than any other engine, and is superior in every other way, it being in fact a double cut off Engine, without tbe friction of a double set of valves with their multiform attachments, and for its superior merits was awarded the gold medal at the Maryland Institute Fair, in October, 1866, over all other engines. This invention, therefore, forms the most radical and entire change in steam engines which has occurred* since the days of Watts, being durable, accurate, and econ omical in operation in space beyond ail comparison with the past, and at far less original cost than ever before attained.
