'. the Charleston Mercury par* th. folloeiag deserved compliment to the .. nlg ement of thU popular Hotel : Vo luxury oflife u more fully appr«- J* than is a first dw hotel by the „„d exhausted traveller. 11 hw - th is demonstiated daily and nightly ?4, Planter,’ Hotel, in Angus’., .here the enterprise of Mr. Ihonua ’.;n' has provided every ncces l,rr and comlort that the most futidf ,u»could demand, and the polite alien ;entlo„ and skillful supervision of Hr *u,ican, add the pleasant ease ot home w the complete and perfect accommo dation ot the Hotel. Both ot the gen tlemen mentioned above, are wel inown to our commnnity tor their tact ,„d urbanity, and Charlestonians stop at the Planters’, will at oute [eafixe that they with old inends and acquaintances, while strangers from more distant places, will be so well satisfied with the treatment which they ,re sure to receive, unit they wH! not wish themselves one mile nearer home. Who are Still Stubborn J The Richmond Times is right in savin? that the most violent and uneom promising opponents of restoration are tho<e who did not get enough ot fight in, during the war. But it should have classed with these the thousands who sought soft places all Xorth, it says : “ Gnnt and Sherman are pacific, conservative and humane, while Butler, who devoted all his ener gies to picking and stealing; and Scbenck, who did more running than fighting, are still for war. In the Cot ton States, real heroes like Beauregard, Hampton, and Lmgstreet, urge the masses to accept the situation, while certain old militia officers are as pug naeious as turkey cocks, and are loud in their denunciations of those who would dishonor the South by ‘conces sions' and ‘ compromises.’ ” So far as Virginia in concerned, the Tim's thinks it is a lucky thing th it the Legislature did not hatch a brood of " Melish Brigadier and Major Generals.” They would doubtless have denounced Gincral Lee as worthy ol the confi dence of the State, and have declared far auolfier civil war at the spring mi litia musters, Married but uot Harried, An exchanges relates an incident that recently occurred at Hartford, in which s young couple went to the house of one of the city clergymen to be married, and finding him absent, a clergyman from New York city, who was on a visit, consented to tie the knot for the anxious pair. The next day the absent clergy man returned, and when his visiting friend turned over" the fee to him, he informed his New York guest that under the law of Connecticut no one but an officiating clergyman of the State can perform the marriage cere mony. Here was a dilemma. The happy pair had gone on a bridal tour, and their exact destinatiou was not known. Steps weve taken to inform them of the awkward mistake, and they hare, probably, ere this, been legally made one. Telegraph to Cuba. The force, consisting of one hundred and seventy five men, to be employed in effecting a telegraphic communication between Key West and Cuba, left New Tork on Saturday last. The distance from the former to the latter point is I*o hundred and seventy five miles, and it is expected that the line will be laid about the 23d of May next. Before commencing this portion of the work, however, four hundred miles of land line, from Charlotte's Harbor, on the south coast of Florida, to Lake City, on the Tallahassee and Jackson Railroad will he laid. N. P. Willi*. Geo. D. Prentice, of the l.ouiaville Journal, thu3 concludes a notice of tlffe lite poet of Idlewild : “ Farewell, Wil lis' As the Hebrew girl, by her loved river, sits and listens to its melancholy wail, mourning tor glories long since laded, so sit we to-night by thy fresh made grave, and mourn for one who was the magic musician, whose lightest ‘train stirred our rugged nature and softened its stern chords, until only harmony—soft, sweet, delicious hor ny ,ov—filled oar soul. Willis, fare well!” Haney. Men w-ork for it, fight tor it, beg for it, steal for it, starve for it, and die for it. And all the while, from the cradle to the grave, nature and God arc thun dering in our ears the solemn question, ” hat shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world aud lose his own soul?" lots madness for money is the strongest and lowest °f the passions; it is the in wtiate Moloch of the human heart, be fore whose remorseless altar all the finer attributes of humanity are sacrificed. It makes merchandise of all that is sacred n ,. Urnan affections, and even traffics m the awful solemnities of the eternal. Kiminff. Josh Killings says there is “one cold, ue, lean kiss, that always makes him shiver to see. Two persons, (or the tema.l persuasion) who have witness! a greate many younger aud more pulpy meat ln some public place and not having saw each other for twenty four hours, tha kiss immegiately-then tha tori about the weather and *he young man who preached yesterday and then tha kiss immegiaieW, and then tha blush and larf at what tha sav to each other, and then kiss again im megiately. This kind of kissing olwas put me m mind ov tew old flints tricing to strike fire.” 6 Kevolutloii in Maytl. Recent advices report that the insur gents have succeeded i„ capturing the city of Port-au-Prince, aud taken control of the government. Nearly all Geffrard’s troops went over to the enemy, and he was compelled to take refuge on a French man-of-war which was carrying him and some of his staff to Jamaica, THB DAILY PRESS. VOL. 111. I Address in confidence, MADAME GERTRUDE REMINGTON, P. 0. Box 297, West Troy, N. Y. mh2o—ly A YOUNG LADY RETURN ING to her country home, after a sojourn of a few months in the city, was hardly recognised b, hor friends. In place of a course, rustic, flushed face, she Lad a soft ruby complexion of almost marble smooth ness, and instead of twenty three she really appeared but eighteen. Upon inquiry as to the cause of so great a change, she plainly told them that she used the CIRCASSIAN BALM, and considered it an invaluable acquisition to any Lady’s toilet. By its use any lady or gentleman can improve their personal appearance an hundred fold. It is simple in its combination, as Nature lierself is simple, yet unsurpassed in its efficacy in drawing impurities from, also healing, cleansing, and beautifying the skin and complexion. By it3 direct action on the cuticle it draws from it all its impurities, kindly healing the same, and leaving the surface as Nature intended it should be, clear, soft, smooth, and beautiful.
