Tlse Sabbath Day.
“ Hail Sabbath! thee I hail, the poor man’s
day!
Tho pale mechanic now has leave to breathe
The fnorning air, pure from the eity’s smoke,
As wandering slowly up the river’s bank,
He meditates on Him, whose powers he
marks
In each green tree that proadly spreads the
bough,
And In tbo tiny dew bent flowers that bloom
Around the roots; and wbilo he thus sur
veys
With elevated joy each rural obarm,
He hopes (yet fears presumption ia the
hope,)
That Heaven may be one Sabbath without
end."
I love the Sabbath day, sweet day of
rest; rest from cares, from toils, from
the never ending vexations and annoy
nnces of our six days labor of body and
mind. It is a day of rest, of meditation
upon the wonders of the Almighty
Creator; His love, which snrround us
on every side, and with which H*, in
His goodness and mercy, has covered
ui, as with a garment, all the days ot
our life.
It is our bounden duty to offer to this
great and good Being the homage of our
hearts, either in His “holy temple” or
by ear firesides, at least once a week,
for these blessings of life, of health, of
prosperity; and eveu in adversity we
should be thankful that our lot is no
worse when we compare our condition
with those who are in rags and suffering
for daily sustenance, and with no place
to lay their throbbing beads and broken ,
hearts.
This thankfulness should be given
4»ily and hourly, but ‘ chiefly ought we
so to do” on\ibe “blessed Sabbath,” a
day set apart as “Holy uuto the Lord.”
The fourth, commandment ought to be
kept more strictly everywhere.
Let the doors of our namerou* and
beautiful churches be thrown open wide
on the Sabbath day, that all those who
enter their pbrtals may not go away
empty. Let every seat be filled, that
the industrious aud laboring man, and
all others, may sit aud “partake ot the
waters of life freely” and eat the bread
of righteousness “without money and
without price." —Sunday Orescent.
Southern Poverty-One of iU
Caused,
We find the article below in the
Gazette, published in Colombia, Maury
county, Tennessee. The argument ad
duced, is applicable throughout the
South:
During the last season the farmers of
this county made first rate average crops
of Cotton, and it was said as high as
there is auy reason to hope that it will
•ell again. The aggregate yield may be
estimated at 10,000 bales for the county.
This, at 25 cents, Was sold for one mil
lion two hundred and fifty thousand
dollaJH—all of which ought to have
come, and the great hulk of which has
come, into this county.
The question is, where is it now?
And many people are puzzled for an
answer. But it will be explained very
quickly and dearly to any one who will
take his stand at the depot as the freight
cars are emptied aud see what character
of freight they daily deliver. There
may be seen arrivals every day of every
article of farm produce used bv man or
beast, brought from Louisville to Cin
cinnati. And just at this season whole
car loads of implements may be seen,
all bearing the brands of soma Louis
ville ,or Cincinnati houses.
Add to these the regular supplies of
dry goods, hardware, drugs, and notions
that, under present circumstances, can
not be produced here, and the question,
whcf'te 0068 tli© Cotton money go ? is
very yearly answered. Header, if you
own a farm, do try and raise your own
potatoes, peas, and bacon; above all,
raise your own corn. It is not yet too
late to arrange for your corn crop.
Then take time by the forelock, and do
not, wi beseech you, continue to
labor and slave for a foreign task
master. ’
—-A Mew York company is about to
erecj, a glass factory on Rock fiver
canal, Rockbridge county, Va. The
hand is worth eleven dollars a barrel,
yielding ninety six per ceut. of silica.
