shakes the buttered rolls down into
vour mouth, and you eat without effort,
iud enjoy yourself without labor. It is
good.
In the same woods the shirt tree
grows, described by the celebrated
traveller, Huinbolt. ’ The tree is felled
with an ordinary knife, the skin is
taked off, two arms holes are cut into it,
and there is the shirt- A work of five
poor little minutes, such as one may
get through with lazily in an idle spell
winding off the sniail end of nothing
from a chunk of pine.
To varv the diet one ne-J oulv whis
tle for a native, who will cotne, and for
the consideration ot half a cent will
produce from his traps two dozen wood
cocks, which are plentiful there, and as
we all kno-v are most delicious eating.
Fur one cent one may obtain a bushel
and a half of sweet potatoes. The
yam, indeed, grows almost spontane
ously, and it is brought to its high
slate of perfection by being simply
poked in a hole and covered over with
sand, an operation requiring no more
energy than is necessary to dip up a
gourd of water and drink.
All sorts of fruits grow iti the great

into observation by their profusion.
Death in that country is, as we have
intimated, easy. All that is necessary
is for one to satiate himself with yams,
bread fruit, shirts, grapes and laziness
and lie down in a jungle and go to
sleep. When he wakes he will find
himself in the belly of a boa-constrictor,
or heaven, or perhaps somewhere else.
A Romantic Affair.
A wealthy gentleman ot Cincinnati,
not long since, left that city, resolved
upon engaging in business in New
York, and before doing so had occasion
to visit a certain family with whom he
had been for a long period of time on
terms of friendly intimacy. In this
faniilv was an interesting young lady
for whom he had evinced an attachment
ol a more tender character than that of
mere friendship, and who. happily for
his fortunate self, returned his affection
with all the feeling ot a youthful heart.
On hearing ot the departure for this
city ol the one she held so dear, after in
vain attempting to make him desist
from his journey, she formed the reso
lution of accompanying him unknown
to her parents. The gentleman en
deavored to induce her to abandon her
wild idea, as he termed it, but she would
listen to no appeal, and made all the
preparations necessary to leave her
home clandestinely with him, afier
having made him promise that he would
not reveal her project to any member
ot the family. The pair arrived safely
m this city, and put up at the Metro
politan hotel, the gentleman treating
the young lady with all the respect due
a sister by a brother, he engaging
separate apartments for her exclusive
occupation. They had not been iu

A YOUNG LADY RETURN
ING to her country home, after a sojourn
of a few months in the city, was hardly
recognised b_> her friends. In place of a
course, rustic, flushed face, she had a soft
ruby complexion of almost marble smooth
ness, and instead of twenty three she really
appeared but eighteen. Upon inquirj 7 as
to the cause of so great a change, she plainly
told them that she used the CIRCASSIAN
BALM, and considered it an invaluable
acquisition to any Lady's toilet. By its use
any lady or gentleman can improve their
personal appearance an hundred fold. It is
simple in its combination, as Nature herself
i3 simple, yet unsurpassed in its efficacy in
drawing impurities from, also healing,
cleansing, and beautifying the skin and
complexion. By its direct actiou on the
cuticle it draws from it all its impurities,
kindly healing the some, and leaving the
surface as Nature intended it should be,
clear, soft, smooth, and beautiful. Price

AT THE WONDERFUL REVELATIONB
MADE BY THE GREAT ASTROLOGIST,
Madame 11. A. Perrigo.
She reveals secrets no mortal ever knew.
She restores to happiness thoso who, from
doleful events, catastrophes, crosses in love,
loss of relations and friends, loss of money,
etc., have become despondent. She brings

business you are best qualified to pursue
and in what you will bo most successful,
causes speedy marriages and tells you the
very day you will marry, gives you the

by her almost supernatural powers, unveils
the dark and hidden mysteries of the future.
From the stars wo see in the firmament—

nate in the configuration from the aspects
and positions of tho planets and the fixed
star- in the heavens at the time of birth,

I BEG LEAVE TO CALL THE ATTEN

.Steam Engine, which is cheaper, lighter,
less intricate, occupies less space, consumes
less fuel than any other engine, and is
superior in every other way, it being in
fact a double cut off Engine, without the
friction ol a double set of valves witn their
multiform attachments, and for its superior
merits was awarded the gold medal at tho
Maryland Institute Fair, in October, 1866,
over all other engines. This invention,
therefore, forms tho most radical
and entire change in steam engines
which has occurred since tho days of
Watts, beiuij; durable, accurate, and econ

comparison with the past, and at far loss
original cost than ever before attained.
