A Brief hut PointKu History.—A Cali fornia correspondent of the Forlamouth Journal a uma up in a f«w words fhe history of that country, ami illu»trot«» it hy an anocdot* which is forcible and to the point. It is an fol- lowe:— “ The history of California is heat illustrated by an old New liampHhire backwooda atorv. ol n fellow who was left to watch a brick' kiln far away in the woods, all solitary and alone. So soon as he begun to realize his po sition, and night caruo on and tho wild beasts commenced to howl, ho began to shake, and soliloquized after this sort: * First, there will come a house cat, than there will come n wild cat, then there will come a cat-amount—and 1 don't stay hereso cubing the action to the idea he gave chose to hit companions, and loft the brick-kiln to take care of itself. VVe Imre had the house cat and tho wild cat, and now tho catamount has come sure—Sacramento is burned, and Frank Pierce is elect«d-—I,ObjJ buildings destroyed in ono night, and 4,000 majority tor Pierce! This is awful news for one steamer; but there is one consolation the buildings will be all rebuilt before the news of the disaster readies you; the other consolation is that Frank Pierce is a good fellow, and a ; - e m__ ll.miitliin,*'' nativo of Waar Hampshire Odd Incident i» CnuBou.-L.aat Sunday afternoon a popular clergyman in ttiis city, nB ho wan commencing liia aermon, diBcovored ono ol Ilia coogiogation rouding a newspaper. WOODWORTH, No. 181 Broughton-st., 8avannah, Ga. sep 9 WINTER IRON WORKS, Montgomery, Alabama, Sept. 1, 185‘L flMIESE Works, employing 160 hands, construct I an average of an Engine weekly—and bog attention or Mill owners to the most valuable improvement in Mill Maohluory of the day, and so wnrranUsl— to wit: COOPEIL’8 PATENT UPRIGHT AND DIRECT ACTING 81NULK AND GANGHAWdllLU ENG1INK. nCBBAOtVO (WIZIII OTI1EK VALUABLE IMPROVEMENTS) HMIe's patent continuous feeoworks An incomparably superior substitute for the Hag Wheel. Tho peculiar prinolplo from which the abovo Mill de rives its greatest merit, is more especially valuable in Its application to tho Gang haw frame. Tho Engine stauila immediately underneath the Hash, to which the Piston Bod is directly attached. Tho motion of the Hash is thus directly oontrolted by the steam in tho cylinder, and by the introduction ot this at a particular point, the force of both the up and downward stroke(nsu- nlly falling with such jarring oft’oete on tlis plumber blocks and wrist pins,) is entirely arrested, tliu hash being thus always suspended as it were on tho Htoam, relieving thereby the journals and wrist, (so linblo to beat in tbe usuul application) of all boating tendency. By virtue of this principle, practical demonstration can be furnished that these mills arc capable of an oa- sy speed of 200 revolutions per minute, and at this spued sre noarly noiseless; the out of the saws being almost alono heard. A common speed for tho single saw under this application is from 250 to 300 revolu tions per minute! The sty Is in which those Engines bud their appurtonuQuos are gotten up, is superior throughout, while tho mill iu its desigu, embodies ovo- ry practical aud well tried improvement extant.
