SAVANNAH MORNING NEWS. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1852. Tim dm mm. A Visit to O’C'owncll’o Kulalo. Minn Mariineau, in nn nccounl of n visit «h« lately paid to the tomb of the calibrated Daniel O'Connell, says: The most implacable enemy of O’Connell could not but be lunched and softened by n visit to Derry mine Abbv at this day. There can hardly be a more nflectinfr spectacle than that house where so much of the politic# of our couutry has beuu conceived and discussed. The situation of that old tent of the O'Con nells is finer than description can give an idea of. Seen from above, in its green cove, em bossed in woods, guarded by mountains, whose groy locks are gaudy with gorse und heather, and facing n «*n sprinkled with islets, it looks like a paradise retreat. The first glimpse of it from theCahiricvecn road—-the road by which O’Connell passed from one mass of his Inr^e property to another—shows his yacht riding in a Round in front ol his grounds ; ami that sea view suggests the remembrnnee of the old days when the O'Connells of both families—Dan s uncle and father—were umJorsiood to do as others did who lived in situations so favorable for those commercial enterprises which are conducted by night. In the vviId times of the lost century, when tlelitmce of law was rather a virtue than otherwise, and communication with France whs on Irish privilege, gentlemen who had houses among llio hays and sounds of the west coast, wore under every induce mem to make their fortune by smuggling. Tha wild ruin of the bouse where Daniel wus horn stands in nil admirable situntion for smug gling; and so does the Abbey; and legend runs that the ability was abunduntly used. Smuggling is quito over now, os the const guard tell with a sigh. And agitation is over too. So one house stands a ruin and the other is rotting away in the damp and neglect. It is inhabited; it is ovoii filled with company at limes ; it is to bo so to-morrow. But not the less forlorn is its uppearnnee when seen from a nearer point than the mountain roads, choked by its own woods, which grow almost up to the windows, stained with dump, out of joint, unrepaired, unronowned—-it is a truly inolancholy epectuclo. Melancholy to all eyes, it is most so to the minds of those who can go back a quarter of a century and hear again the shouts which hailed the udvent of the Libera tor, and see again the reverent enthusiasm which watched him from afar when lie rested at Dcrrynano from his toils, and went forth to hunt among his hills, or cruise about his hays. Now, tjierc is his empty yacht in the sound, and his clmir in the chapel covered with black cloth. All else that ho enjoyed there in his vast wealth of money, fumo and ponulur love, seems to he drooping away to destruction. When we wero there, the bay whose full waters must give life and music to the whole econo, was u forlorn stretch of impassable sand—neither land nor water. The tide was out. It wus too liko the destiny of him whom it neighbored so neurly. Ilia glory swelled high; and grand at one time was its dash and Ijar; but the tide is out. And it can uevor re turn—could never have ruturned, if he had livid; for there is going on, wo trust, a gra dual upheaving of the luud, giving some promise of that reclamation which ho never would allow.
