The contract for carrying tha mail between
Key West and New Orloans, in a steamer
uitnblo for the trade, has been given to Gen.
In H N Kl-ftTT
John Scott, of Oonlln, Florid..
Th. ato.mor will leave New Orlonn. on Ilia
3d and 17tn of each month, stopping at Pensa
cola, Appalachicola, St. Marks and Tampa, i mtU stock
arriving ai Key West on the 10th and 24th,
returning the succeeding day. The contract
commences Jan. 15th, and is closed in 1855.
Hie amount paid fur this service is near
$20,000 per annum. This sum will insure
[he continuance of the line, and wo look for u
largo and prosperous trade. Emigration to
South Florida will now ho easy, and will
rapidly follow the removal of tho ^eniinoles.
A rumor has reached us, that the inerchantL
of Savannah aro about to place a boat on the
Havana route in connection with the Isabel.
We trust that this rumor may have some foun
dation ; the travel on this line is large, and,
with greater facilities, would oe much increas

greatly, and tho trndo of South Florida, des
tined to be important, will be secured for the

The Eiirthqunke ut Acapulco.
The following loiter addressed to the Pana
ma Star, gives some particulars of the loto
earthquake at Acapulco :
Acapulco, Dec. 9,1852.
The “ Cortes” will bring you the news of a
severe earthquake at Acapulco. The first
shock occurred at twenty minutes pnst ten
o’clock, Saturday night, December 4th, and
the shocks, although less severe than the first,
have been repeated every hour since. It came
without notice or previous indication, except
that about six P. M. the mercury suddenly
rose to eighty-eight, being three degree warmer
than during the dav; hut even this cannot
perhups be attributed to the earthquake. The
ground rolled like the ocean in n swell, and
then a trembling motion was felt, lasting thirty
seconds. About thirty of the best buildings
the town have been ruined, some falling
mpletcly , while all of any worth have been
seriously injured. The loss is at least
$200,009.
All the bottles, gloss, and crockery-ware
... the hotels and private houses were thrown
from the shelves and tables. Yesterday morn
ing u severe shock was felt, throwing down a
few wares which had partly fallen at the first
shock. The Fultou Hotel fell at tho first
shock on Saturday, hut by almost a miracle
every one was saved in tho town. In fact, I
hove not heard of a singlo life being lost, al
though a few were seriously injured.
Tho whole population now sleep in the
streets or in the churchyards ; and processions
with the images of the Virgin and Christ, per
ambulating the afreets with solemn strains ot
music, singing, and muffled drums, imploring
God for mercy.
As 1 write to-day, (Dec. 9, at noon,) I have
constantly to spring from my desk, ns shock af
ter shock is repeated, for fear of falling tiles
aud walls.

Correspondence of Dally Morning News.
HAVANA, 2Sth December, 1853.
Since our Report of I3th inst., the business in Sugar
has beon very small, as the stock is reduced to an ex
tremely insignificant quantity; the transactions whioh
took place, wero at previous quotations. We hear of
some contracts for now Sugar at 4>£ rls. for Cucuruoho,
5 (g) 6% rls. for Browns, 6 (jj> CJf for Yellow, 8>£ for
Whites. Until within a fow days tho weather was rainy,
which impeded grinding; but now it appears sottled,
and the geuorallty of estates aro likely soon to be in full
operation. On the whole, we cannot- oxpoct to soe the
»w crop at market earlier than usual.
Owiug to the unfavorable weather, the supplies of
sw Molasses havo been scanty, and the few cargoes that
have gone forward, wero bought at 3>£ (§> 3,\* rls.
There has bsen Tory little done in Coffee sinoo our
last Report.
As wo aro in tho midst of tho holidays, business in
general is interrupted, aud this will bo the c&se for a
short time yet.
Ixi’ORTS.— 1 The business in Rioe comprised about 270
Casks at 11*4 and 11>^ rls., aud 300 Casks retailed on*
in small lots at 12 rls.; also 700 Bags Manilla at 7 rls.
and 800 Bags Valencia at 9 and 9 \ rls. There are on
hand about 900 .Casks Carolina, and a cargo Valencia,
equal to 700 Casks; some more is announoed, as on the
way from Brasil. A cargo of W. P. Lumber from Port
land realized 27 and $28, part being wide and part nar-
and throe moro parouls arc in. A cargo of P. Pine
