Happening to cast our eye over the first cal endar page of Crenville’B Almanac for 1853yes- terday, we meet opposite the day of tho month, Jan. 3, tho words—“ Quite keen air." If the Almanac maker had said “ rain in the foic- noon,” we should have set him down for “ u witch.” The air was “quite keen” sure enough, and what is quite as remarkable.it was the first time during the season that tho air would havojustified tho compliment. During tho morning yesterday, the atmos phere was mild and summery, whilo a heavy fog obscured the distant rico fields. About two o'clock heavy clouds rolled up Irom the west and poured upon us a delugo of rain About four o’clock the wind hauled round to tho North-West, and blew almost a gale. It was then that the air became “ quite keen,’ as sharp and searching as a zephyr from the regions of perpetual snows. t-cT At an Election hold yestorduy, Messrs. Francis Sorrel, John W. Anderson, Win. Duncan, Anthony Porter, and Charles Green, wore duly elected Trustees of thu Independent Presbyterian Church for the yenr 1853. The Lone Star Hall. The Ball at St. Andrew's Hall on Friday night was not largely attended, inconsequence of the numerous lamily parties in the city, and the inclemency of the weather which doubtless kept many ludies at home. The arrangements were very fine. The room was splendidly de- coratud, the music was good, and tho supper, which was prepared by William Claghurn, was as bountiful und elegantly set out os any Ball supper wo ever saw in Suvannah. There was a profusion of everything substantial* und delicacies, all arranged iu the most tasteful mauner. The dancing was kept up to a late hour, and the company seemed to enjoy them selves heartily. tsr Professor Anderson, tho renowned “ Wizzard of the North,” will be in Savanuah about next Monday. So wo learn fiom Mr. Ford, his Agent. Retirement ol' Mr. Locke from tho Re publican. The Republican of Saturday announced the retirement of Mr. J. L. Locke, from the editorial chair of lhut paper, a position which he bus filled with ability fora period of nearly thirteen years. In his valedictory, he informs us that he has remained long enough in the harness Jto fuel uow powerfully controlling business habits become, and to bo convinced thut tho time has arrived when he must re tire or continue in tho same circlo of daily re curring duties. We congratulate him on his escape from the incessant toils, the cares and responsibilities, inseparable from editorial du ty, and sincerely trust that he niny find in whatever walk of life ho may pursue more case, more pleasure, with prosperity aud suc cess equul to that which has crowned his efforts in the field of laborious usefulness from which he so gracefully retires. Mr. P. W. Alexandku, the successor of ■Mr. Locke in the proprietorship and iu the ed- Horial control of the Republican, has for PSome three years past fillod the post of asso ciate with distinguished ability, and has given ample proofs to the public thut the character of the paper will be fully sukfhined. We con gratulate him in his new position, and tender him our best wishes for his nucrPHs. The Florida Trade. Mr. C. Drew, Editor of the Jacksonville “ Florida Republican," expects to be it Savan nah to-morrow, and will remain here a short time on business connected with his paper. Tha Republican is an able and influential pa per, and has a lurge circulation ill East Flori da. 'Those of our merchants who desire to make their houses known in that section will find it a valuable advertising medium. Mr* Drew will be found at the Pulaski House while here. Advertisements for iUa paper may be left with Mr. Gkorok N. Nicholes. Post Master Resigned.—We learn that the Post Master at Bryan Old Court House, in Bryan couuty, has resigned, and that at pres ent there is no person to fill the office. Conse quently no (nail will hereafter bo made up at the Savanqah post office for that place. Illness of John M. Clayton.—The Wil mington. Del. Gazette Bays a rumor has been prevalent in that town for some days past, to the effect that this distinguished gentleman was suffering under the preliminary symptoms of a serious disease. Recognition of the French Empire.— It is stated that despatches have gone out from the State Department directing Mr. Rives to acknowledge the Empire as the Government de facia of France. V" Steamers between Baltimore and Savan nah. The Cotton Plant strongly urges the estab lishment of a line of steamers between Haiti more and this city. It considers Savannah point of great importance, and adds t “The position of that city, in connection with her railroad system, is at this lime of striking significance. When tho Pensacola road is completed, a communication between her end Baltimore will be an absolute neces sity. Then why wait? Why not anticipate trade T The Tennessee trade, now concentra ting at Chattanooga, in itself almost justifies such a step. We osk the merchants of Balti more to tako the map and oxaminn the advttn logos of .Savannah, especially with her Gulf road.” The Savannah und Pensacola Railroad the Cotton Plant considers the most important road on tho American continent, and says that future years will show this to be the case, will, it ie also contended, be tho best paying road, and will have an extensive influence trade. Whon that road is completed, says the same paper, a line of steamers between Balti more and Savannah, should bo established They should bo built at once, so as to create a current of trade and travel, that Baltimore may realiso some of the benefits of the Gulf trade. The editor does not overrato the importance of steam communication botween Baltimore and Savannah, tho radiating point from which an immense commerce will be diffused throughout the interior States of the South and South-West, and the centre at which tho trade and travel of the North Atlantic States must meet that of the Gulf ond tho Isthmus und Sons beyond. Ho does not overrate the posi tion of this city in connection with her widely extended railroad nvstom, or the im purtancu to Baltimore of a connection with us by steam. Wo havo not a doubt that a weekly line, of steamships between Baltimore and Savannah would noon become a paying investment and that it would vastly iiicreuse (lie cnmincrco of Baltimore with our section. Baltimore has already a considerable commerce with Sa vannah, but if she would compete with New York and Philadelphia, she must compete with them iu means and facilities. Successful com petition of this character will accomplish more for her advancement than all the commercial Conventions that ever havo been called to gether. The Florida Indians Refuse to Emi grate.—By passengers who arrived on Sun day from Florida oii the Wm. Gaston, we leurn that it was reported at Pnlatka, and in tho interior of Florida, thut Billy Bowlegs and his Indians had refused to emigrate, and that they had gone into the hammocks. This report, it is said, came direct from Tampa; it s also said thut the sutlers havo for some time past refused to sell the Indians powder and lead. Billy’s forco is insignificant in point of num bers, but in the swamps and hammocks of Florida thoy will bo ablo to make a protracted resistance. If the Indiuns aro determined to light, they should be promptly and resolutely dealt with. or Tho Cily Councils of Uostun have negoliaiod with Haring, Brothers & Co., fora loan to tho amount of £<100,000 sierling, benr- ng interest, (4j per com. per annum) paya ble in twenty years from 1st Oct. lam. They have also rosolveil to borrow $135,000 to meet the payments on tho cily debt, ond $34,000 for paving and sowers. Tho total city debt, at tho close of tho present financial year, exclu* sive ol tho water debt, will bo about $1,879,- 600, boing u reduction of $21,790. U* Tho ablest papers iu Canada West, •allowing in the wake of Canadiun sentiment, have begun to protest against tho practice of making that proviuca a pluee of refuge tor tha runaway negreoe of tl: n continent. iy Hichurd llildre.lt, the historian, says a correspondent, is preparing a " Theory of Politics,” one of a series of wotUs, of which the " Thoury of Morals,” published some eight yours since, was the first. It is stereo typing in Boston, and tho liurpors will be the publishers. ty* In a cusu ol uppeal, aiming out of tire sei/.uro ol liquor under the -‘ Maine Liquor Law," in Miuesuta, Chief Justice Hozner de cided that tho law is unconstitutional and can- nut be enforced. I?T lie New Orleuiis Picayune learns that Major General Twiggs, commanding the Southern Division of the U. S. Army, has is sued orders for tiro brenking up and immediate removal of the military depot at San Antonio, and of the cuminissary ond quartennuster de partments to Corpus Christi. Advance in the Prick of Irish Pro duce.—The general advunc. in tho price of provisions which has been the subject of so much remark on this side of the Atlantic, seems not to be conOnod to tho United States. Letters by the Canada state that some months past a remarkable advance has keen tendily progressing in the prices nf provisions there, and tiro market rates in the provinces, us well as in tho metropolis, rule nearly high as they did in the yours 1840-7. The originating causes at the present period are no doubt widely different, und are plainly to be attributed to the improved condition of the country, the result of two ubuudsnt harvests, and the rcuuinerating prices as realised by the sale of all kinds of furming stock at tile several lairs held through the year. Iu grain peciully tho tendency continues upwards, «ud speculators iu com regard the prospects as favorable to the holder. The report of tho market in Belfast, fur the Sih, says : “ The consumption of Breadstuff's has in creased so lurgely that the mills iu operation find it difficult to keep pace with the demand. Uven where Hour end meal manufacture is carried i n by sleum-power, we learn that extra labor alone can meat current requirements. Turin produce lies advance 1 to sumo extent since liar veal, mid now stands at u figure very much above the quotations of lest season.” 13** Mr. Cass' resolution calling for infor mation respecting Ilia establishment of a new colony in Cenlrul America by Great Britain, was taken up in the Senate ou Thursday and passed. ty Ion sayo the Kepurt of the Secretary of the Treasury will disturb the golden dreams ol a surplus of twenty millions for Congress to riot on. It will be found that there is no necessity lor a reduction of the tariff; for tha purpose of disposing of the surplus revenue. O'- T he Yoliow Fever was abating among the inhabitants of Barbadoes on the 4th inst., but on board the war steamer Dauntless the scourge had made awful havoc. Twelve offi cers, including three lieutenants, the second master and four engineers, besides about 40 of the crew, had fallen victims. IS 1 * Slaves Closing of the Track of tub Balti more and Ohio Railroad.—The Wheeling Gazette says that on tho overling of tho 24th ult., at five minutes after C o'clock, the track from tho oust, under the direction of Mr. Iloseby Carr, sr., and that from Wheeling, under the direction of Mr. Roseby Carr, jr., met on tho 188th section about 2J miles from Moundflville. The last rail having been placed, Mr. Carr addressed his men as follows : “ Wo huve now laid the last bar of the long link of railroad which connects the Chosopeake Bay and the waters of the Ohio, and I call upon you to give three cheers for our President, lliomns Swann, and three more for our Chief „„„ . connection Engineer, Benj. H. Latrobe. May they both ° 8 l,,rd » wa - livu to make many more connexions of the western waters and tho nen-board.” The roar of the stream was drowned in the answering cheers from the now united parties of trucklayers, and it being proposed that three moro should he given for the immediate superior, IloBcby Carr, sr., they wero given with a will, and the tired workmen retired to their respective camps. rsr The suuhoii has bcui rsmarkable for floods and storms throughout the country. Iu the South wo have had two or three extensive floods, and our Northern mid Western ex changes bring us accounts of the ovciflow of the rivers in every direction. The Philadel phia papers speak of the unusual high waters in the Delaware and its tributaries. The streams in the interior of Ohio me over their bunks, and have done much damage to proper ty. The floods iu the western streams must have the effect to swell the volume of the Mis- issippi, and we shall not bo surprised to hear of the breaking of tho Loveus and of disastrous overflows of the low country. The Nashville News of the 27lli ult. says : The rivor has risen some two or three feet since yesterday, and is still coming up—-the main current is now nearly on a level with udway. H., in a letter to the Herald, gives u rather graphic description of the personul uppeuruncc of Gen. Pierce, as follows : “I Imve had the ploasure of several little in terviews with General Pierce. He is a man of mark, n man of education, u man of accom plishments in the wuysof the world ; n shrewd politician, and of hroud and comprehensive views us a statesman. His face is expressive and genial, and intelligent. Ho is affable and pleasing in his manners, modest and unpresu- ming, yet cool and self-possessed in a remurku- ble degree. Ho evidently feels thut he has not yet been tried to the measure of his capacities, and, what is better, lie hits the power involun tarily of convincing you of the fact. lie bus an agreeuble voice, speaks readily, freely, flu ently, and correctly ; but he keeps his own counsels in all manors requiring the exercise of a saving discretion. “In person hois about fivo feet nine inches high, straight and slenderly built. He has not that breadth of shoulders, nor that depth of chest, indicating the most vigorous constitu tion. His complexion, too, is pale, and his fueo thin, excepting the extraordinary expan sion of his lower jaw; but he is one of that wiry, uctivo cluss of men, nil muscle and nerve, and capable of all sorts of hardships and endurance.” ty The statue of Thomas Jefferson—the Bocond in Crawford’s Washington monunient- 1 group—bus just been cast in the Royal Foundry, Munich. Destruction of the Government Stores.—By lute accounts from Los Angelos, York via San Francisco, we uro advised of a disas trous fire at Cumj> Yuma, on the Colorado, hich occurred on the 1st inst. The fire broke out in the Commissary’s quarters und extend ed to tho whole of tho government supplies, flour, beef, pork, &e., producing the almost to tal destruction of the stores at the station. The loss is estitnuted at $200,000. The Star says there are about 400 itieu at Camp Yuma, and unless supplies should be received within a hurt time, rnuca embarrassment must onsue. A train of ten government wagons, laden with stores and provisions, left Los Angelos on the 20th for the Colorado. These were prompt ly dispatchod by Lieut.
