Tho splendid steamship Florida, Capt. Woodhull, from New York, made nxtrnonlina ry good sailing during her last trip to this city. The heavy weather which has prevailed for some days, it was thought would detain the steamer, and our citizens wero yesterday morning surprised to find her lying at hei wharf in this city. We liuvc procured a copy of hor log, which wo publish below, and from which it will be seen tliut she crossed our bar nt 1.30 A. M.. yesterday morning, and at 3 A. M. , was moored to her wharf. Tho Florida, at 4 P. M., on Monday, mode Charleston Light House, making the run from New York dock, in forty-nine hours. The distance from the bar to Charleston dock can bn run in an hour, which would hnvo made the Florida's time to Charleston fifty hours,—the quickest time ever made by a steamer between Now York and Charleston. T'.e host time the Charleston steamer, tho James Atlgcr, ever made between the two cities, was 51J hours from dock to dock. Consequently tho Florida Iiob beaten the James Adger's time, one hour and a half! Wo do not publish the above in a boastful spirit, but to show that the Florida, still main tains her reputation as ono of tho best and fastest steamers afloat. Had it not been for the gale which sprung up on Monday afternoon, tho Florida would havo arrived that night ut 11 o'clock at hor wharf in this city. Tbe Mteninalitp Plnrl<ln’a Log. Tho Sandersville Georgian speaking of the atovement in Augusta for the construction ol n plank road from that city to some point Briercroek in Burko comity, with branches through Jefferson and Washington counties suya : We aro glad to learn that an euterprize of this sort has been set on foot, and hope that it will fully meet tho hopes and expectations ol its projectors. Augusta used to lie a fuvorile trading post with our citizens, hut the want of Railroads or Plunk llouds—tho conveniences of the age, has long siuce estrungod them, and diverted their attention to other quarters. We duro say thut our people will be happy to be reintroduced into that thriving City, and will lend some aid in establishing tho proposed Road. We siucerely hope that it may meet with every success. Fire in Macon.—Yastorday morning about 3 o'clock a firebroko out in the dwelling house of Dr. Strohkckek, situated on Mulberry street, Macon, which, together with the out houses. were consumed. We did not learn tho extent of tho damage, further than the des truction of the buildincs. Froze to Death.—'The waatner at San- dcrsville on Monday wus very cold, and the wind blew almost a gale. A nmn under the influence of liquor want to sleep in tho open air,and was found a corpse yesterday morning. ty The City Council of Augusta huvr voted five hundred dollars extra compensation to the Mayor, Dr. Wm. The Cholera In Charleston. For ten or twelve days, saya the Charleston Standard of yesterday, we have had rumors, but not in tangible shape, t.i Cholora in our eity. We heard of several poi sons who were supposed to have died of Cholero, but iu every case, the sickness was traced to imprudence iu eating, tnd the attending physicians, who ■poke of their disease, as Cholera, at the •amt* time said that it was not epidemic. But this imprudent indulgence has continued so long, in the face of the remonstrances of our physicians, that they have been compelled to report to the Board of Health twenty-two cases of Cholora for the last week. We are assured that in nearly every instance, the disease was sssily traced to some indulgence iu oysters, or other unwholesome diet. Reported Outrage.—Capt. Stellor, of the schr. Aid, of Charleston, which vessel arrived on Saturday Inst at that port from Cardenas, states that the Aid wasentered and thoroughly searched, nod hia papers overhauled, by ofli cere of a British Sloop of War, while on his passage from Matanzas to Cardenas. It presumed that she was mistaken for a slaver. She was only an American vessel under the American flag, any how. Customs Orncrris Fees. — it is stated says tho Baltimore Sun, that certain incum bents of custom-houses—measures, weighers ond gangers—have perferrtJ a claim upon tho Treasury for all the feet of their offices, in addition to their sularies, since 1842, imoun ting to $800,000 or $900,000, and probable even more than that. The Secrctury of the Treasury very naturally hesitates about pay ing such a demand. It is alleged, however, that tho Attorney General (inserts the legality of the claim. The President/ equally with tho Secretary of the Treasury, is opposed to tho cluini, but, regarding the Attorney General us the proper legal adviser of the.Government, fouls a deli cacy in overruling his decision on such e point. The claim, it is ulleged, rests upon soma technical error in legislation, recently discovered by a cute office-holder. The sub ject will shortly come up, or is now, beforo Congress. Marine Disaster.—The Charleston Cou rier of yesterday slates that the ship Gondar, Capt. Barotow, from London, 38 days from the downs, in ballast, arrived at that port ou Mon day. She reports that— Nov. 25, just beforo daylight, Uslinut hearing S. about 25 miles, foil iu with two small bouts, containing the captain, 2 mates and 11 seamen, belonging to the Br. bnrk i’latinn, (of Loudon) from Carditf, with a cargo of Coal, bound to Portsmouth, (Eng.) tliuy having abandoned the I’latina the day previous, she having lost her soils and being iu a leaky condition ; soon after tuking them on board it camo on to blow heavily, with thick weather anil a heavy sea, and had they not been providentially fallen iu with, they would no doubt hnvo all perished. Three days after, foil in with the ship John & Lucy, (of Thomaston) from London for New Orleans; the Gondar being short of provisions large n number, the captain of tho J. A v kindly took aiz of the wrecked men— the captain, mates und remainder of the crew remained on board the G. and have been brought to Charleston. I3T Ethan A. Gordon, a promising boy, tho son of Mr. Ei.isha W. Gordon of Wash ington, County Gen. was killed on Friday tho 31at ult., by becoming entangled in the gearing of a cotton Gin. His head woa caught be tween the rim of llie cog-wheel, and the shaft of a band wheel of *.he gin. The Affairs ok EunuKE.—The New York Courier thinks that at no period since tho coup d'etat of Napoleon, twelve months ago, have the affairs of Europe commanded so gen eral and so close attention as at present. All Europe is under an undefined and yet undeni able apprehension that its poncoful relations which have been preserved essentially unim paired for thirty-seven yeurs aro soon to be bro ken up. This all is held to depend upon tho will of a single man ond that man is universal ly distrusted. No reliance whatever is repos ed iu the professions of Louis Napoloou, and greut importance is consequently uttachcd to tho slightest indications of his future policy. Steam on the Rio 1)e La Plata.—The enterprise of the New York merchants has ta- kon hold of the project of introducing steam upon tho heud waters of tho La Plata, where from the riches of the country, und its extra- ordinaiy resources, a valuuble trade may be expected to spring up. The first steamer of tho United Stutea and Paraguay Steam Navi gation Company ia advertised to leave New York in a short time. The Government sur vey, under tho command of Liculenaut Page, is in a state of great forwardness, and will leave tho city of Washington almost simulta neously with the first steamer from New York. It is by such enterprise as this that Now Yolk maintains its high commercial charucter, und contributes so abundantly to the prosperity of trade in the country. GT Mr. Amos Lawrence, ono of the most wealthy and benevolent citizens of Boston, died suddenly on Thursday night, about mid night. Ho was severely ill only about a quar ter of an hour. On Tuesday last, tho deceased accompanied Gen. Pierce and Senator Hunter, of Va., on u visit to the Bunker Hill Monu ment, und appeared to ho in good health. Freight at Wheeling for Baltimore. Tho Wheeling Times uunouncus the urrival there from Louisville, of 400 bbls. of pork, to be forwarded to Mosers. Love, Martin & Co., of Baltimore. This is the first heavy produce freight for tho Bultimoro und Ohio Railroad Company ; this description of freight having heretofore gone via Now-Orleans.—Baltimore Sun. Railroads do not exactly moke rivors run up stream, through they often change the current of trade. ry The duughter of Mr. Weyman, of Cin cinnati, a child seven yonrs of age, died sudden ly on Thursday last, of a singular discusc. She roso in the morning with a flushed face, complaining of a hoadache. Her pniu soon increased, and large red blotches began to ap pear upon her body, Shortly after which, she fell to the floor. Sho was picked up and laid upon the bed, where after two or three spasms, she caused to breathe. aty Tho Bombachtcr am Ohio, a German paper printed in a sluve State, (at Louisville, Ky.,) has begun the publication of a transla tion of“ Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” or The amount of Gold deposited in the Mint at Philadelphia, duriug the month of De cember, was $3,330,000, and the amount of gold coined during the same period, $5,770,- 705. The totul deposits of gold for tho year 1852, have been $51,059,295, ond the coinage for the year $51,505,033. The number of three-cent pieces coined during December was 3.590,000, and the totul number during the year, 13,6611,500. iy Captains of vessels recently arrived from Europo state that they have never known so boisterous weather on tho Atlantic, and by tho long passages made by the steamer* we in fer that the storms and gales are more sovere than usual, even in the present inclement sea son of tho year. ^ A gcntlemarTnaincd Johu W.King has recently written a pamphlet, in the form of a memorial to tho I^entucky Legislature in rela tion to a change in the inode of electing the President of the United States. Chr In twins Holidays at the Orphan Asylum. Ain. Editor 'The Christinas Holidays are at length over, and all have returned to tho usual routine of quiet or active duties. Per haps our fair oily has novel presented so mer ry an aspect as during the past week. All classes and conditions have participated with unwonted zest in the joyous spirit which has pervadad. Have yon not thought that thoso brilliant young orbs which illumino your own warm hearth have fairly outshone themselves this year? Ago lias raised himself upon l|is start* to regurd with ft complacent smile tho mirth and sports of youth. Grief has wiped away hei tears to sympathize in the clear melodious laugh of Joy and Innocence. Slave- ry, happy in the bond which here protects without oppressing, has cut merry antics, singing," Why can’t the white boy dance like the nigger 1” nnd while assisting young "ntas- sa” to fire crackers or shoot oil’ the blaze of Roman cnndloa, Ims made the “ welkin ring’’ with his shouts. Many a bright picture has been contemplated with grateful hearts by thoao who delight in witnessing human huppi- ncss. Perhaps none hove transcended that which was presented within the walla of the Female Orphan Asylum on Christmas day und during the week. The kind and efficient ma tron, who has for the lust nine years presided over the every-day destinies of the almost two score little beneficiaries of that Heaven- devised institution, forgot, for tho time, in her gratitude and sympathy, that feeble health had conqielled her to rcaign the nrdnoua duties of her post for the futuro to more vigorous hands. Ah ulic spread out all the tokens of kind re membrance und provisions for their participa tion in tliu annual festivities before those thir ty-six pair of bright eyos and eager faces, it would liuvc made sorrow's heart itself leap for joy to witness their pleasure. In the warmth of iier gratitude she appeared to de sire to return hor own personal thanks to ev ery kind donor in behalf of iIioho little ones.— She first pointed with pride to the ample and excellent “Cnristmas dinner” provided by tho benevolent Directresses thcmeclves. She then displayed a long row of nice, large pies, pre pared nnd sent by a ludy who, notwithstanding sho Imd weighty fumily cures of her own, could not contemplate tho fuir faces of her own two little girls and forget the orphan. A bar rel of apples and u fine ham were next exhib ited, as presents from two gcntlemon. A large waiter, hoaped with enkes, fruit and confec tionery, the joint gift of two ludies in the vi cinity, followed A banket of cases, “enough to last a week,” a present from a lady, suc ceeded that. Then came u generous package of confectionory from a young lady whose sweet countennr.cu is an index of her still love lier mind. And the display closed with a full box of candy from another lady. Heaven bless the kind donors all! In'regarding thut scene of juvenile pleasure, it required but a slight stretch of tho imagination to fancy that gentle beings in the spirit-realm were also looking upon it with the illimitable love of n mother’s heart, und invokiug blessings on those who had gathered their bereaved little ones into tlint warm fold of Christian chnrity. May their own chcritdied household treasures he spared to them, and may tho eyes whose light now beums in the sheltered happiness of purental cure, never be dimmed with the or phan’s tear, nor tho bird-like voices whose tones now send a thrill of joy into the mother’s innermost heart, ever be changed to the or phan’s wail. Jane. Tlic (Spiritual ('(invention. Wi gave u brief notice of a convention of spiritualists recently assembled in Bostou, ut which a Mr. J.N. Spear announced a communi cation from John Murruy in the spirit world. The spirit of Mr. Murray promised some im portant communications*, which are thus stated in a Boston paper: 1st.—Let it he boldly stated that tho follow ing beautiful manifestations will soon appear— new religious teachers; new arts of heuling; new forms of Government; new and bcuuti- ful architectural structures ; new communica tions in regard to tho coming glorious future. 2d—Let it be distinctly stated that there bus never before come on earth u work which iu so short a spuceof time had spread so wide ly and rapidly, and that the past prognosti cates glorious things lor the future. 3d—This work is to he tho ago of practical wisdom und useful knowledge. The communication closed by suying that spirits of a high order would uitcnd the convention to unseul lips so that they would speak, &c. 1 lu9 any ago of the world witnessed such outrageous hutnhuggery as this ? Infant Mortality in New York. A writer in tho New York Tribune calls the attention ol the editors of thut puper to the alarming infant mortulity iu that city, which he thinks deserving of tho most “ serious consid eration of the city government, and of an en lightened und huiuuuo community.” He says— Tho wholo number of deaths in the City for tho year past scorns to have buou 21,558 Of these wero iui'uuts still born 1,31*8 Children one year old nnd under 5,2% “ two years old aud under 2,81*5 •' livo years old aud under 2,488 I wish you to rciiiurk, iu the first place, the enormouB proportion ol infants still born, li amounts to pur cent, of all the deaths iu the Ciiy. An the biitlisnro not registered, oral least are not given in your tables, no estimute can be made of the propoition of still born in fants to those born ulive. But no doubt can be entertained tlmt it must be large beyond ali that natural cuuses can uccuunt tor. Very ma ny ol these cases must be the result of crimi nal practices, the fruits of monsters who make fortuues by trampling on all laws, human and divine, and whom magistrates und citizens still tolerate in their midst. But secondly, I beg you to consider the im mense sacrifice of life iu this city during the first year of liumau existence. Tho number of children which died during the past twelve months, of ouo year old and under, was five thousand two hundred and ninety-six, or a fraction of twenty five per cent, of all the doaths. The second year is attended with less haz ard, and yet the loss of life during this is also enormous, and the danger, though grudually decreasing, continues uppalliug till the child arrives nt the uge of live years. Those dying under this age constitute nearly onc-ha/f ol the deaths, aud including infants still born amount to fifty-six per cent, of them. Aud this under the light and amid the bles sings of the uiuetceiiili century! This iu a ci ty with the wealth and enjoying the prosperity ol New York, u city belter situated and pos sessed of greuter nutuial advantages for heultli than any oilier city in the world*. One thing is obvious: There must be enor mous wrong somewhoro. Such eftects do not spring from trifling causes, nor can they inno cently exist.
