TI1IH DAILY NEWS.
Thk Pardo*imo Power.—A bill lint been
reported in the Pennsylvania Senate revoking
the Governor, whenever ho shall pardon any
convict, to enuae to bo publiahed aa noon n*
practicable thereafter, once a week for two
weeks, in at lenat one newapuper printed in the
county in which the penitentiary or jail in
which miuh convict ahall be confined may be
located, or in which such tccum-d person may
reside, the reasons, if any, which have influ
enced him in granting such pardon, together
with the names, if any, of such persons who
may have petitioned fur the pardon granted.
Captain's Wives.—At one time there have
been enumerate I in Honolulu, the wives ol
twenty-five sea captains. From such infor
mation us can he obtained, it is supposed llnil
one in sis of ull whaling captains is accompa
nied by his wife. The practice is annually in
creasing. This is a now feutuie in the whaling
business. Probably a score of Ameiican ladies
have visited the Arctic Ocean during the past
summer.
No Accountiso fok Taste.—We chew to
bacco; the Hindoo takes to lime, while the
Patagonian finds contentment in a bile of gu
ano. The children of this country delight it
candy ; thoso of Africa in rock eall. A French
man gous his length for fried frogs, while ur
Esquimaux Indian thinks n stewed candle the
dim-tx ofduintiee. The South Sin Islanders
differ from all these, their favurile dish being
boiled clergymen or a roasted missionary.
