This is the last wock of the exhibition ol this magnificent Puiuting in Savannah, Those who have not yet seen it should not lose the preseut opportunity. It is one of those inter esting and instructive spectacles that cannot well be seen too often, aa it increases in inter est us we become bettor acquainted with it, und its historical and romantic associations are re vived in the uiiud. To the well-read-spectator it is uext to an ucluel realization of. the scone* depicted, and he would no more be satisfied with a single glance at the passing canvass than he would be with a dash through Italy in a railroad cur. He must dwell upon tho gulai branches of the scene to comprehend and admire it- Once fixed in his mint), they a/o never forgotten. It is rarely, indeed, that art third* so interesting a study as that pre sented bj* tw Mirror of Italy. Fire at Tiiundkrboi.t.—On Saturday night a firo broke out in tho house of Mr. Roes Holland, at Thunderbolt, which was soon de stroyed. The building was constructed of wood, two stories high, aud occupied as a bar room and tavern. Deft tli of a New York Merchant. Mr. Charles J. Wallace, merchant tailor of New York, diod at the Pulaski House last evening, after a brief illness. Mr. Wal lace had long been extensively connected ii the merchant tailoring business, and had been in the habit for several years past of annuall) visiting Savannah, where he had a considera ble number of patrons. He arrived here on the 13th inst.on the steamship Alabama, and after remaining in the city a few days visited Macon, where he was taken ill. He returned to this city a few day* since, but his disease btsuomiug worse, soon terminated iu his death Thkuk were Giant Oysters iii those Days.—An immense oyster, weighing two and a half pounds, may be seen at our reading room. In the Senate on Thursday, Mr. Seward presented several memorial* praying grant* of land to aid in the construction of a ship canal around the Fulls of Niagara. Also, petitions in favor of the establishment of a lino of steamers between Brooklyn and Germany. Mr. Cass* resolution directing an inquiiy by thu Committee of Foreign Relations as to tho nucsssity for any action relative to tho Uul- wer and Clayton explanation of the treaty of 1850, was iuken up. Mr. Manguni opposed the resolution. He was in favor of postponing it till after the lift of March next, in order Hint Mr. Clayton might be boro to defend hiihsulf. He thought no practical object was intended, hut merely h personal matter, and Mr. Clayton ought to bo heard. He was opposed to this warlike de bate, when nu iiniu would darn to uvow his willingness to go to war. Mr. Ca«s suiil ho wux not to lie deterred from auy investigation concerning the honor of Ilia country, by the declaration thut he would not go to war. Tho preservation of our rights in small matters was the surest guaruuty of peace. Slavish submission to wrung would inevitably result in war. Mr. Bull at great length urged the postpone ment of the subject till Mr. Clayton reached here. If it was intended to have ameasuro re ported to repeal the treaty, he would desire time to debate it. He thought there hnd been euflicisut debate on (be subject, aud much more thau necessary said to arouse the people of llio United Status and to frighten European powers, lie thought llio construction of twen ty war steamers and the erection of necessary fortifications much bolter to preserve peace than paper resolves. Mr. Mason thought it a proper inquiry to ns certain whether the treaty ratified by the Hen ule had been impaired or altered by the adden da placed there by Messrs. Bulwer and Clav- ton. Ho not considsr wur was necessary. Ho did not ut any time say the colonisation of the Bay of Intends was an infraction of the treuty; but lie did say, and repealed it now, that wheth er that colony was or was lint an infraction of that treaty, that colony would liuvo to be dis continued. Mr. Borland followed, supporting the reso lution, and Messrs. Iluie and Undurwood op posed it. Mr. Gwin moved to lay the resolution on the table ; lost—yeas 9, nays 31. Air. Mungum moved to postpone it till after thu 4th of March next; lost—yeas 17, uays29. l lio resolntion was adopted. In the House Mr. Stanley reported a bill to pay lo different States public moneys due un der the net of 1836, which was read a first aud sccoud time test session, aud referred to the committee. Air. Orr, of S. C., moved to lay the bill on the table, aud the yeus und uuys having been ordere'd, the motion was carried—yeas 105, uuys GO. Tho House then went into committee of the whole on the state of the Union, and ngaiu took up the amendments of the deficiency bill, u number of which were disposed of. Tho lust of these wus a resolution by Air. Siunly, that in future books ahull not bo sup plied! to members for the Congress of which tlioy were not members. Tho value of these books he suid amounted lo nine hundred dol lars, which are often sold by members. In some instances a former member of Congress dios, aud his executors consider the book us assets ; aud there being no purchaser for them in the localities, they are sent to agents ut Washington, who sell them there, and tlioy uro again issued for tho use of members. Tho umuiidmuut wuh adopted. The committee then rose, and the hill with amendments wc.o reported, aud having been agreed to, the hill wus loud u third time, aud passed. Havre and Webster’s Speeches.—Red ding vV. Co., Bustou, have published in u neat pamphlet of 84 pages the spcocli of General llayne of South Carolinu, in the U. S. Semite* on Air. Foot’s resolution, January, 183U,—and Mr. Webster's speech in reply to it. Gencrul llayne wus an eloquent debater, and a fine spe cimen of Carolina chivalry aud geutlemanly burning. On the occasion in question, lie stood forth ostensibly as the champion of the South, und ventured to break a luuco with the intellectual giant of the North. Tho speech is of interest ns a reminiscence of a period of high political excitement uud acrimony ; and is, moreover, ueccasury to a competent under standing of Mr. Webster’s reply. This, it is generally known, bus ever been regarded and spoken of as "the great apeech” of the Alassa- chuscil* statesman; as u profound and lumi nous exposition of fundamental principles of the Federal Constitution. Had he never de livered another speech, this aiono would have transmitted his name to the latest periods of thu Republic. This publication, interesting at any time, derives additional interest from the recent death of ono of these distinguished orators, and wc have no doubt will be eagerly sought after by the reading public. It may he ordered from Boston by mail. Tho price is 25 cents. I3P" As the schooner Orlando, from Saltil lo, Georgia, wus coming up the New York Bay ou Wednesday morning, ono of her crew, numud Wm. In tho island of St. Thomas not u soldier has escaped, all liuving died; and many of the ships in port were without crews. Demand for Shirs.—The large number of vosnols required for tho California and Aus tralia trade has given a groat impetus to ship building. We see it stated tliut Air. Taylor, a merchant of Boston, has just sold his now ■hip, iiow on the slocks at Chelsea, for $20,000 advance on her cost, to a Ncw-Yoik house. Boors and Shokh.—The lumber dealers are the most active in business, in New York, ut present. All descriptions of goods have ad vanced ttince thu full a 10 per cent., while slocks are very light. The mnrkot for upper and sole leather bus still an upward tendency. Iu Alassuchusetts u petition to the legisla ture for the repeal of the liquor law has re ceived a lurge number of aignatures. Among the signatures is Abbot Lawrence, who re quests its repeal on the ground of its incon sistency with the rights of American citizens. Air. Tklkgrai'ii between Europe and Amer ica.-]' he idea of connecting Great Britain and the United Slates by telegraph is revived in London on a grand scale. The proposition is to extend the line from Scotlund by way of the Orkney, Shetland and Fcroe islands to Ice land, and thence to Greenland; thenco across Davis’s Straits to Labrador and Quebec. The entire length of the liue will be 2500 miles; and tho submarine portions of it from 1400 to 1000. From the Shetland intends it is pro posed lo carry a branch lo Bergen, in Norway, connecting it thcro with a line to Christiuua, Stockholm, Golteuburg, and Copenhagen; from Stockholm a lino may oasily cross the Gulf of Bothnia to St. Petersburg. The whole expense of this great international work is es- mated considerably below £500,000. C3T Mr. Duriua Davidson informs the pub lic through the New-York papers that he discovered ten years ago a principle by which he can create a motive powei, adapted to all uses to which steam is applicable, with a Hav ing uf 60 per teut. iu the fuel required to pro duce any given amount ol power. All this, he says, is to be done by the means of heat, air, steum, and a vacuum. He invites offers for tho sale of half his right iu the invention iu the various parts of this country and iu ail the principal countries of Europe, and he pro poses to apply the proceeds of his salo to the construction of Iron Ocean steamers 700 feet in length, which will cost two millions of dollars, and will bo capable of running to Liverpool in five days. Tho Nashville Daily Aetca of Wednesday last says— Considerable excitement and anxiety exists amoug our citizens tn-duv' in consequence of the mysterious disappcuranco of Air. R. II. Bruckin, of tho firm ofNichol, Brackin &*, Co. Early this morning his hut and cloak were foil lid at the wlmrf.—Tlioy were lying neur the stern of the steamer Umpire, and the cloak contained several holes, which evidently had been cut with u knife. This fuel oxciled sus picion and inquiry, and now it is believed tliut All. Brackin has been murdered. Luai night at 11 o'clock Mr. Brackin and Air. Nicliol left their store for their respective homes, and oroccedcd together ns fur us llm corner ol Church und Cherry streets, where tlinv sepa rated. Since that time nothing has been seen heard of Air. B. That he has committed suicide, no one who was acquainted with him II for a moment suppose, lie was a man of ouiinneachuhle character, correct and tem perate m his habits, nod not given in the slightest degreo Dispells of mental depression. So tliero is v*» ground for the suspicion that he bus fullen by his own hand. Mr. Bruckift has been married hut a short time, uud his wife is ut present absent, on a visit to her relative* iu the nouuiry. Sad in deed will be this intelligence to a young uud happy wife. The Bacon Market.—We hoar much ap prehension expressed that the article of Bacon must necessarily he low during thu coming season, owing to the large quunlity in prepar ation for shipment. We ure inclined to believe tliut no fears need be entertained upon this object. It is true thut more hugs have been slaughtered in East Tennessee this winter than utuny former period, hut it is equully true that Georgia never received less supplies of pork. The large number packed in the North-west, aro uot intended for the Southern trade, but arc held with a view to shipment to the European, Australian and California markets. The im mense supplies which have horctoiore sought a market from Cincinnati, by way of New Or leans and Savannah, will thus in a great meas ure he suaptmded, and the seaboard itself will look to Tennessee to make up tho deficiency. Much more will the interior of Georgia, Ala bama and South Curoliua depend upon Ten nessee to meet their wants. It is well therciore tliut our penplo have de voted their attention no extensively this seusoii to the curing of buuoii, mid our Georgia friends need have no fears ou this head, as they will cerluinly he furnished with a large quantity from East Tennessee. Our own county will ssud o(T u considerable amount—not less thun half n million pounds. Almost every man see, besides the regulur. dealer, has some to sell, uud the cry ail over the country is, bacon —bacon—bacon. Such is tho iulltinuce of | ruilroads—and by such mean* East Tennessee is destined to advance to great commercial prosperity.—Athena ( Tenu.) Boat. Great Railroad Huekd.—The express train with one mail car (containing thirty-nim hags of letters ami papers, brought by the Eu rope, in cliurgo of Southwortli, United States muil agent,) and one passenger cur, left Boston ut 4 p. m., in thu cure of George Lovia, agent, and 1). This run wus made by the new locomotive “ Whistler,” a splendid machine, with drivers of G feet 10 inches di ameter, aud for some portion of tho distance (lie speed exceeded a mile per minute. Left New Haven ut 8 o’clock, n. in., und reached Twenty-i until Street, New York, (76 miles) at 9 45— ing 105 minutes. In the whole iuii from Bos ton there wuro nine tttoiia, in all making 20 minutes of dead halt, with an many more lost in slacking and starting ; tho whole time wu* 5 hours ami 45 minutes; deduct fur stops uud slacking 40 ininuteH, ami the actuul running timo is five iioukh and five minutes. The distance is 23G miles, thus showing uu uversge running speed of nuuriy 47 miles an hour, or 41 miles an hour including stops. This is probably the greatest speed (tor uny considera ble distance) ever made iu this country.—Boa- ton Allan. r? 1 * The correspondent of thu London Moru- ing Chronicle, writing from Florence, on the 29lh ult. reports that Air. Stouehouse, a young Englishman, had been confined iu the fortress there. Ho was walking with his father. who wus smoking, when un Austrian sentinel at u public building told him to throw the cigar away. Smoking is not allowed uear govern ment offices. Alr.StonehouAo not understand ing what the sentinel meant, did not ut first comply, and the soldier rudely compelled him to desist. Mr. Stonehouse, junior, upbraided the man. I^iud winds followed, and a thrust of the bayonet, which was parried with the hand. The two Engliahuien then went away to a coffee-house, but wore followed by a de tachment of police. The young man was taken to the guard-house, and alter being detained an hour, was removed to the fortress, where he is at present. The matter has been referred to the English consul. Singular Case of Bigamy.—On Saturday, a young woman, named Lacey, plead guilty, in Philadelphia, to a charge of bigamy. Ac cording to die evidence, the defendant wus first married about7 years ago. After living about three weeks with her husband, he shot at her uud seriously wounded her. They were living in New Jersey. The Imshnnd escaped into Delaware, but was apprehended, tried, convict ed and sentenced to four years imprisonment, which lie served out. List spring the defend ant again married. She was advised to do sc by her friends, who told her what they believed to be the law ; that the conviction of the hus band was a divorce in itself. From the evi dence, it appeared that the woman believed this to be the case, und acting under uu erro- neous impression of. the law, married a second husband. Seuieuce was suspended, and she will uot probably ho punished severely, if at all. Bishop Ives’ Conversion to Romanism —The Vnivera says a general subject of con versation at Rome is the recent conversion to ihs Catholic faith of Dr. Ives, the Anglican Bishop of Carolina, hi the U. States. Dr. lvgs hnd for a long time embraced Puaevile opin ions, and f«N strong sympathies for tho Ca fholic religion, which hud subjected him ft much remonstrance. Since he bus been at Rome he has put himself iu relation with Alonsignur Gill, the Catholic Bishop of Vir ginia, U. S. v ami addressed himself to Mon- signor Talbot, the private cumene re of the Pune, in order to make his solemn adjuration ud publicly profess Catholicism. This cere mony took place an the 26th of December, tho pope, iu person, admiuisieriing the sacrament to the convert. Dr. Ives, in uhamlouiug the Episcopal Church of the United States, hns given up a very advantageous position. His wife nt first warmly opposed his intention, but it is said that she now begins to defend him against the attacks of some Protestant minis- is who accompanied the btelinp to Rome. Tiie Cask of the AI a dials.—The Opinionc uf Turin of the 5th inst., publishes a tetter from Florence of the 2d, aiiuouncing the death of Mr. Francis Aladini, whose case has excited * much attention in the religious world. But letter duted Florence, Jan. 3d, (one day luter) says that Air. Colombo, tliu Swiss Pioteitani clergyman, hnd just returned from visiting llio Madiai*. He found Francesco Alndiai, who is confined at Volierra, in u very bad stnto of health, having growu vory thin, but otherwise cheerful and lirm in Ilia religious convictions. The letter further slates, thut thu Aladiais were very well treated. The Swiss clergyman was to visit Alndiai again on llio Gib, to administer the sucrnmenl. Rosa Madiai was in prison at Luc- cu and as well treated and ns comfortable as is possible in the prison, which is very damp, wus hoped that they would ho speedily par doned. Sir John Franklin.—A correspondent of the Cork Con$tilution, Mutes thut during the gale nil Monday Inst, a bottle was washed shore here, containing a letter purporting to written by Sir John Franklin. It is dated Cupc Bathurst, 12th of January, 1850, and rep resents Sir John and his companions to he in considerable want of provisions, having nearly consumed a seal that they hud caught. It al so states that ten of the seumeu had died du ring tho previous yeur, and that u bottle con taining a letter was scut adrift in 1849. The letter was written on a sheet ol foolscap, wri ting rather indifferent, and signed J. Franklin. We find the above in (lie London Sun, of the 4th instant; it is most probably ono of the many fabricated statements put forth on this painful ubject. No ous would rejoice more than our selves should it prove true.— Baltimore Sun. Intemperance in Boston.—By tho records kept at the Boston city jail, it appears that 151 porsous were committed there during the week ending the 22ji inst., of which number 95 were for drunkenness, and of toe remaining 56 it is probable that few were strictly temperate per sons. On Alonduy morning in tho Alunicipal court, Judge Rogers presiding, 41 intemperate persons were fined or sentenced to the House of Correction, now overflowing with prisoners, three-quarters for intemperance. l*T H is said that Airs. Echo ol the 15th has the following facts with regard to the present value ol negroes : “At u succession sale which wo attended on Alonduv last, we were struck at tho cxtruordiuury high prices ut which the negroes were sold. The terms were fifteen per cent, cash, and the bal ance on a credit of ono aud two years. On these conditions, we saw ordinary negro women sold for over $1200, and field hands ut $1400. When wu consider tlint our pop ulation is entirely destitute of bunking facili ties, these prices prove a degree of agricultu ral prosperity of which we miv well he proud.” AIkdical Nomenclature.—Knick Knacks tells a story of a celebrated physician who recently prescribed for one of his patieniB that safe and palatable remedy, “syrup of birch thorn,” und wrote his prescription in the usiiul cabalistic characters, “ Syr. Ilham Calh." On mquiriug of tho patient if she hud taken ths medicine, a thundercloud dark ened her fucc, lightning Hashed from her eyes, and she exclaimed. “ No! 1 cant read your doctor writing, und i uint again’ to take your Syrup of llam Cata for uny body under heaven.” &r Some little mterest lias been created by a rumor, which has been current at Buffa lo, u few days past, that a company of twenty liuve purchased the exclusive right to use the “Caloric Engiue” on the lakes, and that tlioy hud made the preliminary arrangements lor the conxtruction of quite a number of propel lers aud heater a, which the New Y'ork Tost supposes must be the substitute for steamers. 15r Field-Alarsliu!
