SAVANNAH MORNING NEW8. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 9. 1853.
THE DAILY NEWS.
Sr. Auquatijik.—The following is An ex*
trnct from e letter written by a gentleman now
in St. Auguitine, (Fie.) to hie friend in New
York.
“ You would feel amazed at the apparent
quiotneee of St. Auguniine, should you ever
visit it J n seaport without a vusnel in port or
in eight, ol any description, and hut three or
four yawU. Isay apparent quietness, for I
am apeaking ofsnit doors, but in doors the cnee
is very different. Holla and pnrtiea are frequent.
Tlioso disposed to attend them can have the
opportunity almost every night. Masked balls
are alao in vogue. Thu people are hospitable,
but how they live, and what they live upon, la
a queetion 1 cannot answer. There is employ
ment for none except Inhorerstir negroes, who
pcrlbrni the usual routine of every day duty.—
A cart or carriage is seldom seen in the streets,
except when in use by some of the invalids or
visitors. The lower classes (for I have not
seen a beggar since I came here) live on fish
Mid oysters, procured in this harbor or adjacent
water's; and although I have been out early
and lute, I have never seen any kind of victuals
go in orcotno out of any house, or sniffed the
perfume of tits kitchen in passing through or
slung tho houses; yet it is very evident they
livo mi something besides air, the women lip-
pear flesh and plump, tho men only middling.
This town or city was, until n few years ugo,
filled and surrounded by orange groves, giving
it a most beautiful and romantic appcarunce,
and affording nourishment and support, by the
use and sale of this delicious fruit, in tho in
habitants. A (rust destroyed them almost ill a
night, and an insect, before unknown or harm
less, has tince infested tho tree, and destroyed
what the frost loll, us well ns discournged tho
inhabitants from cultivating any more. The
consequence is, that tho liluco pie* outs the op-
pcarance of desolation ; you can hardly con
ceive of one mure ruined and unsightly.

simple statement of facts, that otliors may, in
pen this article was that of a young lady of
our acquaintance, who by frequent exposure to the
night air, contracted a Cold which settled ou the Luugs
before its ravages could be stayed. (This occurred two
years ago this winter.) Various remedies were used,
but with vory little effect or bcuofit. Tho Cough grew
, toration,
and pale, hollow cheek, told plainly thut pulmonary
disease was doing its worst ou her delicate frame. The
family physician was consultutl, und although lie would
tha young lady that she really had
Consumption, yet he would give no encouragement as
to a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuaded to
make use of a bottle of Dr.|Rogcrs's Compound Syrup of
Liverwort and Tar, and we are happy to state she was
perfectly cured in less than three months by this inedi-
ciue alone, after even hope was destroyed. It is use
less to comment un such a tasu as this, for the simple
truth will reach where polished fiction never can. If
auy doubt the authenticity of this statement, let them
call at tills office.— U. S. Military and Natal Argus, No.
