The umectioo of Mazzini and Kossuih with llieee gfi sufficiently shows the descripth indi* at work to mould the materials of r ution. But it appears to us that the uttempt present unavailing. There is no doubt aiger amount now of disaffection on the conti- of Europe, than there wus at (ho first tage of the reaction. Tho ostracism of hmen who are ready for political < piracy, has increased : e number who are tepared to attack Louis Napoleon's govern* ueut before it has become consolidated. Bu> here is too close it sympathy at present be nefit! all the great Monarchies—their military mmments all too easily concentrated—the evolutionary excesses uro still too recent to Tomise success for some time to any armed pposiiion to established authority. Whm affords a significant sign of the pres it stability of political power on the Conti- entof Europe, is the readiness with which rgo loans are negotiated in England by the qitincntal govemmonts. Such inferior States i Tuscany and Spain have recently effected rge loans with the Rothschilds. The instinct ith which large monied capitalists scent tlie l> preach of danger, renders these conclusions J to war, external or internal, almost as cor nu as matters of such kind are admitting of loral probability.—Charleston Mete*. The New Orleans Picayune thinks tut when the Ericsson murine is the Mississippi river, and the Ohio, Mis- iri, Red aud Arkansas, where one hundred ii are now employed on a boat, twenty or lirty will bs employed; and whrre $100 worth f fuel will be used, something like $10 worth 'ill he substituted. New Orleans will then o better able to compete with the East and forth than sho now is, for freights will full nounously, and the river will thus be enabled o compete to some advantage with railroads. The Latest on Dit of Lola Montjcz.— lie divine Lolla had a row with Capt. Stur- ;eon, of the steamer Eclipse, on which boat he left New Orleans for Louisville. As the (ary goes, Lolla ordered her meals to he erved up in her state room, to which tho Cap- iu objected, telling her tliut except she could l in the plea of .sickness, she must conform tho rules of the boat, and eat her “ wittuls” tho table d' hote. Lola became indignant, r efused compliance with the rules of the boat, nd to show her contempt fur the proceedings, icnt her'maid and tap dog to the tubie in her ilsce. The Captain, it is said, took matters coolly, and gave Lola a ticket of leave at the first wood yard he came to. Lottery in Boston Broken Up.—Fivf or six hundred people from pll parts of New En gland gathered at the Central House in Buttle squure on tho 22d ult., to draw prizes in the New England Joint Stock Art Union Levee Association. There purported to be 10,000 bcketswiibprir.es of from $1,000 to $10.— When the drawing commenced, the police descent upon the crowd and scattered them in all directions. Several arrests were made. England.—Sir Charles Wood, at a public dinuer at Halifux, gave u hint that Government i> prepared to extend the franchise, so as to embrace the most intelligent of the classes now excluded. Dr. Phillip, missionary in the north of Africa, gives the following details concerning that country. A Russian lew, (evident ut Meuduh, gave him information con- naming a groat number of isrnelitos inhabiting me cases ofSuhara, and dwelling also at Bath* hur, Bis-Wrabi, Tauggurt, Bousru, Bltn Uzab, Loijuos, &c. There are in each of these places >a many aaahundred families, ex d in some even more. In one place he found six hundred famines, with numerous synugoguos, and “bout one hundred copies of tho Law, written upon parchment, some of which are more au- cie,,t than any he had ever seen. hut this is nut ail; other curious details (cached Dr. Phillip from another source. A J «w, who had accompanied a German traveller “Jj“ r *8 Tiinbuctpo, found near the boundary JJ ”®(nbara a laige number of Jewish negroes, pearly every family among them possessed the Jaw ot 'Moses written upon parchment. But, that you may be able to judge under standingly ot (lie missionary character of Afri can slavery in our country, you must first learn something of what other efforts have been made and are being made, to Christianize heathens. At an expuuse of more than five millions of dollars, and of many valuable lives, in the course of more than fifty yours, all the mission ary societies ofour country, ol all denominu Cions, are able to reckon up m gross somo fifty thousand converted heathen iu various parts of the world. If, ns w« will rejoice in hoping, they are truly emancinsted from the slavery of heathen idolatry and superstition, and made /ree indeed, it ia a great and blessed work.— May it go on, and without interfering with our home duties! Look now at wliat the institution of south ern slavery has done in this department ol Llinatittiiizmg ihe pagan portion ot mankind. 1 here may be some hundred thousand oi more of the present race of southern slaves, who come from Africa, involved in the deepest darkness of a brutal paganism—many of them even cannibals. And still, in heathenism, did t never yet find one of tliut old raco ; but many of them have I known who were rejoicing in the truth that madn them free. Among them, indeed, I have found some of the most spir tu- ally-minded persons that it has ever been my lot to moot iu any condition of life. Many of them have since gone, und doily are they go ing, to the “ rest that reinaineth for the people f God.” Would they have become Christians in tlieir own lund / 1 ask not au answer. COMMEUCIAL. LATEST OATES. Liverpoi...Feb. 12—Havre....Feb. 10 | Havana...Feb. 12 But what of the field of the faith now among the slaves ol the South ? How many are par- takai£ of and rejoicing in its fruits 7 Fifty thousand or more ? As many as all tho missionary societies and uom,nul boards of missions in our whole country can reckon up converts from heathenism t Aye, more thun double that number can be claimed as converts by each of the several churches of our country ; mid from authentic accounts and various statistics now before I have good reason to suppose tliut more than hall u million of the slaves of our South are gulur members of Christian congregations; Idle of mlidol bsuthens, properly so called, there uro probably very few, if any ! What a contrast is here presented! Foreign imssiouaiy zeal, ut great cost and personal .sacrifice, hut* rescued from heathenism about the tenth part of the number that southern sluvery bus added to the Christian church : at the same time that, of the dead und the liv ing, it has rescued from lieutheuism not lewer than a hundred limes the same number of foreign converts! Let these facts stund by themselves for more easy examination und scrutiny. PLEASURES OK SLAVERY. Is it a parudox ? We shall see. By the millions of the North it inuy bo con sidered as paradoxical to speak of tho plea sures of slavery ; arid by fifteen thousand men, and a somswltut greater number of women, it slmll sec e,IOUnCO<1 “* “ Kr0 “ 3 Qb8urdil J'* VVa It is not more remarkable than true that the most, if not all, of good nntured and candid oii'oro’ur’gredTVijflffific'spoBk of die slaves s enjoying more of contentment and pleasure than do peoplo in other conditions of lile. Aud such is undoubtedly the fact. That some of them run uwuy is uo inoro of au argument against their general contentment than it is an argument against the general contentment of the people of New Englund, that (hsy sell end leave tlioir pleasunt homes to dure tlie horrors of a voyage round the Horn, Isthmian fever, or assassination, or an overland journey to Culi- lornia iu search of gold, aud mark the miles with graves und boucs instead of mile-stones and guide-posts. But not so much tho contentment ol the slave as his pleasure—his joyous pleasure— something of a higher order thun mere con tentment, am I now to speak. The southern slave in a joyous fellow. In willing and faith ful subjection to a benignant and protecting power, and that visible to his senses, ho loans upon it in complete and suru confidence—as tho trusting child holds on to tho hand of his lather, and pusses joyously along tho thronged and jostling way, where he would not dare to be left alone. The poor free negro, like the hild ulone in tho tumultuous throng, with no land tu lead and protect him, is usually snd and melancholy. Not so the slave of a good master, llis are the thoughts that mako glad the heait of tho cared-lor child, led by pater nal hand. The abolitionists say they are thoughtless, and therefore gay and joyous. If they mean this literally, men are they greatly in error. Of deeply corroding and distracting thoughts, such as make lunatics of multitudes ol the free negroes of the North, and not a few of (ho while races, thoy may he said to be thought• leu*. Generally they have none of those to depress their cheeilul and laughing spirits. To have to chew the cud of bitter thought most rarolv befalls them. They have not to think and be anxious about what they shall eat, or what they shull drink, or wherewithal they shall he clothed, or kept from the horrors of pinching frost when the cold winter comes, or how it may fare with them in the winter of old age when they cun no longer work. None of these things, which make sad and sorrowful the days, and horrible the nights, of tho poor of other lunds, ever disturb their ids. How great a contrast between the i conditions in this respect! And hence, ol all people in the world, the pleasures of the southern slaves seem, as they really are, most unalloyed. With a visible power to depend on for pro tection and support, perhaps no other human condition whatsoever can be a more happy one than that of good and virtuous servants to good and virtuous masters and mistresses. At their easy tasks, and in the enjoyment of their varied pleasures, their thoughts ure not of anx ious cures, hut of how happy they are. Jewish Disabilities.—We ure enabled to state, ami we are certain that our brethren will be rejoiced to teurn, that the Earl of Aberdeen, who was a conscientious oppouent of Jewish emancipation, hua, within tho last lew months, seen reason to change his opinion on thu subject, and is now a firm supporter of our claim to bo admitted to all the benefits of tho Uritish constitution. The liouue of Roths child lias the most sanguine hope that tho pre sent session of parliament will not have pass ed away without seeing the Baron Lionel de Rothschild scaled ill the House of Commons ns the thrice-elected representative of the city of London. This, coupled with the fact of what transpired lust week nt the meeting at ihe Loudon Tavern, in relation to the re-elec- liou of Lord John Russell, is indeed cheering news.—Jeictsh Chronicle. gj/T On the 5th inst-, at M'Connelsville, Morgan Co., Ohio, Thomas Carter descended by means of a ladder, into a well 35 feet in depth, with tho intention of socuring some of (he curbing that find been giving away. He hud scarcely got down before be discovered that (be whole above him wus caving in, and he began rapidly to ascend -tbs ladder. He got up within IU feet of lire lop, and there lie was caught by an imineuse body of sand which filled all the space below and above him. Tho citizens railed tu the spot, and forthwith began digging him out, when it was discovered that (here was a smell aperture left along the side ol the luddur, through which they happily found that air could peustrate. They called and found the poor mnn able to talk, and ho, in anticipation of tlieir failurs to gtthiinout alive, instructed soma of his friends how to arrange his business. Finally they reached him, and rescued him, unharmed, from what all supposed a hopeless grate. Cincinnati.—-Mr. Cist Ims just completed an enumeration of the population of Cincinna ti. On Saturday, however, aeveral buyers came forward, and factors succeeded in disposing of 10,000 bales at steady prices.
