Baltimore, Feb. 25.
Cotton in New York on Friday advanced e
eighth of a cent, and 2,750 halos changed
hand*.
On Saturday in the New York market Cotton
was firm and active, and 1,700 hales were sold.

An adjourned meeting of the grocera ol this
city, convened at the Long-Hoorn of the Ex>
change last evening, for the purpose of receiv
ing the report of a committee appointed at a
former meeting to draft resolutions expressive
of the eonsa of that meeting on the attempt to
procure further legislation on the traffic in
liquors, and to prepare rules for their govern
ment as an association.
The meeting was organized by Mr. Wm.
M. Davidson presiding, and Mr. Waring
Ui/smcli. acting aa Secretary.
1 he following resolutions was read, intro
ductory to their constitution, end unanimously
adopted:

Charleston Cotton Market.
Charleston, Feb. 28, P. M.
The salef oPCotton to-day, Monday, reached
1,100 bales, at extremes ranging from 6J to 10
cents. The market evinces increased firm*
ness.
CF* The steamship Isabel, Capt. Tittle,
from Charleston for Havana, touched oft* the
bar yeaterduy afternoon, and received the mails
and passengers from this city for Havana and
Key West.
Large Cargo.—The ship Rochambcau, of
8G5 tons burthen, Capt. Hallowkll,
cleared for Liverpool yesterday, by II. Gowdy,
Esq., and has on board 3,684 hales ol cotton,
of which 188 are round bales—the whole
weighing 1,682,000 pounds. The same ship
loaded last year at New-Orleans, and took hut
3,000 bales, all of which wero square, and
weighed only 1,300,000 pounds—showing a dil
fereiice in favor of this port of 382,000 pounds,
or i( allowance ia made for the round, upwards
of 400,000 pounds. The cotton iwas coin

trict, was arrested in that city oil Friday
evening last, by the police, and convoyod to
Barnwell Court Housp, where he waa deliv

in a very critical condition, and his life is des
paired of. Laid was mistaken in his mun when
he shot Briggs-his intention was to shoot
John Mixson, who was but a short distance
behind Briggs.

Havana
By private letters from Havana, we learn
that on the 18th inat., the commander of the
British Bhip-of-ti.o-line Cumberland waited
upon Geo. Canedo with a formal dau.and for

jects in the Island ol Cuba, and for the iusults
to the British Government in the persons of
H. B. M. Consul General, and the commander
of the ship-wf-war Vestal / and also for the lute

The letter bags of several of the Me steam
ers from Havana for the Unitod States, hud
been stopped while heiug taken on board and
taken to the police office for examination.
It was rumored in Havana that a British
Commiasioner was on his way there to demand
the immediate manumission of every African
that had been imported into that islund since
1821, in contravention of tho terms of the trea
ty with England. This ruinor was causing
great consternation in Havana, as it was sup
posed it would inanuiuit thrse-fourths of the
slaves in the island.
The British Admiral had sent orders to Ber
muda for some more English shipe-of-war to
proceed to Havana, r and the permanent En
glish naval force there was to he largely in
creased. An efibrt is to he made to atop thu
slave trade by direct intimidation of the princi

The Derelict Ship Italy.
The U. S. Revenue Cutter Hamilton, Capt,
Rudolph, returned to Charleston on Saturday,
from a cruise. She left that port on the 17th
inat., and on Friday, the 18th, when about 70
miles from the bar, Charleston Light being
W. N. W., and in latitude 31° 59', she fell in
^vith tho derelict ship Italy, of Bath, Me.,
"^heretofore reported. At five o'clock the same
evening Lieut. Keliam and four men attached
to the Cutter, went on board, and Captain Ru
dolph endeavored to tow her into Charleston,
but the wind increasing to a gale from S. E.,
and the ship, which was dismasted and rudder
less, heiug entirely unmanageable, the hawser
parted. Capt. Rudolph, however, lay by her
for fifty hours, and on Sunday afternoon she
was ugain hoarded, but the weather contin
uing too boisterous to take her in tow, and
(hern being no water or provisions on board,
Capt. Rudolph concluded tlmt it wna most ex
pedicnjJo abandon her, which he did in lati
tude 3*2»17 / , and in about the middle of the
stream. There was, moreover, n iurge hole
near the atern post, through which, had not
Lieu*. Keliam and his men stopped it up with a
large bale of Cotton, she would have doubtless
been filled with water during the gale. Capt.
Rudolph informs the editor of the Courier,
that she had on board about 2000 bales of Col
ton, but tlmt everything moveable had been
taken from her. It is thought that she is now
somewhere in the neighborhood of Cane Fear.
Gxn. Pierce's Carriage and Houses.—
On Thursday, the splendid carriage and hor
eea presented by the Boston pvople to Geu.
Pierce, arrived in New York, c/i route for
Washington. The horses, which cost $1,400
.red. light bay color, with switch tails. The
carriage is a very costly one, the materials
uaed in its construction being all manufactured
in New England. It weight about 1,300
pounds, and cost about $2,500. It is made in
the French caleebe stylo. The whole equipage,
including harness, See., cost 3,5000. This
handsome present will be presented to Gen. P.
at Washington, by Messrs. Dunbar, Riddle and
Fetridge, who ate the committee on behalf of
