The little boy wus severely in jured by the forefoot o( the horse striking him iu tbs back. The Inaugurul—OpiulouM of the Press. With scarcely au exception the press of the country is unanimous iu its commendation ol the Inaugural Address ol President Pierce. Tho leading journals, North and Soth, thut have reached us, Whig, Democra.ic and Indep dent, with one accord applaud the truly Ai rican aentiiuents of the President, and the frank and manly declaration which he makes of the principles and policy which are to go jrera him io the administration of the Govern ment. Both ilia matter and the manner of the address are extolled on all hands. We have said with acurcely nn exception. In this iustauco the exceptions nut only prove the rule, but givo significance and fores to the universal commendation. The highest com pliment that we have seen paid to I 1 dent Pierce is contained in the funati cal ravings of the organ of nbolitiouisui the New York Tribune. The editor of that paper dislikes both the rhetoric and the 1 principles of the inaugural. He denounces it in the chaste and elegant terms for which In is so distinguished, and holds it up as a tissue of incunsisu.ncies and hypocrisy. He thinks the opening allusion of the President to his ]*» here avement in bad taste. He disap proves the President's territorial views, his lor •ign policy and all. "But," says the editor, "that he who indulges in this sort of * high fululing’ should proceed iu tho self-same docu Riant to glorify slave-hunting as a patriotic duly—to denounce a consistent devotion to Human Liberty oh the offspring of feverish biiion or of morbid euthusiaem—and to chaei on in every manner the blood-hounds baying on the track of the hunted fugitive"—these thinga are in the editor's opiuiou, outrageous Ho consoles himsell, however, with the reflection that he lies uot been badly diau| pointed by a man whose “ past career" Imd prepared him to expect no better things. Among all tho approbatory editorials that we have read, none have given us greater satis faction than the article in tho Tribune', fur had tpo found that paper less denunciatory, we thouifl. have began to doubt our own under standing of tjie views and principles declared iu the address. There is no liberty in France—peaceful citizens have been coolly murdered in the streets of Paris— thousands have been depot ted from their homes und families und scut into exile; the whole system of society bus been violently agi tated and (urn asunder, und yet there is no li berty. But there is a falsehood in the text. It is quite ubsunl that wo shout' 1 he compelled to transport to Philadelphia uli the gold uriiving at ibis port, iu order to have it coined and prepured for cir culation in a iegal form. The jealous opposi tion which Philadelphia lias set up to our just claims on this lieud camiot much longer be permitted to obstruct the establijhmeiit of a mint in the commercial metropolis of the Union. To nay nothing of the expense and risk uf transportation,it is an unomaly that of the large receipts of gold into New York, no portion can he coined here, but must be sent to Philadel phia, whom none is received direct. Philadelphia is very jealous at tho more prominent and prosperous position of New Yurk, in the alfutrs of the world generally—but be must learn, sooner or Inter, that she w have to play “ second fiddle" to New York notwithstanding such little spiteful deumnslra iioiis as h-v opposition to the supplying of lilest a requirement in this city, it a meeting of the Prison Association held here a few evenings ugn, a Mrs. Lucmtia Mott, trom Philadelphia, addressed the assembly wiih that cousumuto coolness which only tliess female philosophers can command, and in the course of au irrelevant digression, took occasion as usual to denounce the Fugitive Blavo Law Lillie notice was taken of Madume Lucre. the only response from the audience to her layings, being occasional laughter. Necessity fok Varying Intellectual Labor.—One of the worst results in over working the brain in any exclusive direction, is, that it tends, when it does nut absolutely break down that organ, to produce mental de'- forinity. As the nurserymaid who carries her burden on her right arm exclusively in af flicted with spinal curvature, so the thinking man who gives his intellecual energies to one subject or class of subjocte gets u twist in his brain. Those, therefore, who are chained to mental labor, und ennnot givo the brain repose, should try to vary their lubors, which is nuoth- e ?.* or, . nu * , ®P° ,a * Intense and jirolonged ap plication to one subject is tho root ol all the mischief.
