The cotton market is still brisk. The sales on Friday reached 12,000 bnlcs. The total sales of tho week, amount to 80,000 bales, the largest ever known in this city. Prices are firm, and strict Middling is worth 9 to 9J els. Tho stock on hand is estimuted at about 305,000 bales, deducting 20,000 bales burned ot the Alabama Press. Increased Receipts.—The increased re ceipts at all the Southern Ports, according to ike Prices Current, is 518,000 bales. Racon.—Bacon sides are declining. The Now ttenute. The Washington correspondent of the Now York Express, speaking ol the present Sounlc, says ; Tho Senate Chamber, under the new organiza tion, exhibits the usual disposition to o-Ublish strong party lines. Tho Whigu uro nil on tho left of tho presiding ofllcor, but the Democratic Sena tor* betas the most numerous, lap over considerably ou the Whig side. Mr. Everett takes tho place of his predecessor, John Davis, with Senutor Badger on his loft and Air. Toombs on his right. Air. John M. Therois much regret at the loss of Senator Hale, who was always tho prelude and afterpiece to the trugedies of theSeuute Chamber. He has matin more iiieu laugh here during tho six year* past than ull his asHociutos beside, but whut tho Senate has lost indignity, it has gained in good temper. Air. Tho Whurs, with Everett, Clayton, Toombs, Phelps, und Benjamin, among the old Seoators, ami tlie strong men who hold over, are a fair mutch for their opponents, though much the most numerous.— The Whigs, too, present physicully some of tho finest specimens of men iu the country, such ns Morion, of Florida ; Toombs, of Ga.; Clayton, Phelps, of Vl.; Badger, of N. (From the Pensaool* Oaxetta.J The Isthmus of Tehuantepec to be the Route of Travel to California. Mr. Editor -•—When tho road is constructed across Tuliuautepec it will bo par cxcellcncn, tho pluunant routo uf travel to uuy of the cities nil tho coast of Califoraiu, from New York or any of oar northern cities — provided always, that the railroad is laid down from this city to Savunuah. Now look at it—you cau truvel from Canada East to San Francisco, without enduring extra fatigue, -or loss of sloop throughout tho entire route. On board of all the steamers there ure elegant state rooms, with luxurious berths, and all tho railroads cun *i> through by daylight. Even when the great Paciuc railroad is curried through two thousand miles of western land, some urn years hence, this Tuhaqittsyci; routo will bo preferred by ull who liftve a regard Air convenience and health, for lliOdix or seven days travel, from our eastern States to Cali fornia, constantly on u railroad will be a most fatiguing and wearyiug to the constitution of tho strongest men, aud those who are not. blest with robust health, will most assuredly come this way. The iuterual Pacific railway will be the Nutiouul Military roud thul will enublo us to bold tccuroly, with common vigiluuce, our vast pmisrssions border ing ou Alio Pacific ocean. It will be the road for 'he grout westcru trade and truvel for the we.tern states through which it will ruu. Over it will be 'transported troops, military stores, munitions of wur, provisions, &e., for ull gonurul government purposes. But the citizens of ourAtlautic 8utc« will most surely prefer tho steamer and railroad travel, via Tehuantepec, innsiuucli us it will not con sume more than three or fuor days longer tiinu in going the distuuce, which cuu be demonstrated as fellows: From Now York to Savuntiuii, by stemnor, fifty- four huurs--froiu buvaunnli to Pensucola, by railroad, twelve hours—from Pensacola to the Coutzncoalcon inver, SQYoi;ty-iwo hours—ueross tho Isthmus of Tuliuautepec, by steamer, plunk und ruilroud, in six hours. This calculation brings us to (lie shores of tho 1 acific ocean iu six days from New York. From lha terminus of the railroad on tho Pacific sido of 1 ebuaniepcc to ban Francisco tho distance is 2,300 miles. Uccun steamers now-a-days are making sixteen kuots per hour, mid at a luss rule than that * steamer cau steam tho distance ill six days—which would inuke tho running time from Now York to Kan Francisco, via Bavanus!: Pensacola und the lilbinus of Tehuuutepoc only iweive days. Now, it •uuy bo argued that the estimate oftime is put ut too mw a figure, but it certaiuly is within tho hounds of H l’ e «d acquired at the present day—souio of our clipper sailing vessels huve gone seventeen knots an hour for consecutive days, und man bus not ynt been able to estimate the speed that cau be ucquirod bva locomotive on a railroad. But loru longdis- funco like ihut from Ban Fruucisco to tho Missis- I'ppi a certain rata must ho established and main-' faiiied, aud (heroin-the short reads of (lie Tekuuu- topee route wilt havo tho advantage. The prospective utility nml importance of this invention uro very apparent iu its appllcutii portraits, landscapes, botany, morbid uiiuiomy, mineralogy, couchology, aborigiiiul history, the reproduction of valuable paintings, und to various ornamental purposes. Tho committee uro satis fied of Air. Hill's claim to origiuttlify and priority of invention, uud deem it Imt just und right ihut he should be suitably protected and oiicnuruged; and they deem it more particularly so seeing that n rival lias been set up ill r'rmice since the aiiuouneu- iiinut of bis discovery was mndo. The niuniia by which this process is curried out being strictly chcmir.nl, it would seem that tho existing putuiit laws would not secure to the inventor the soetir ty required. Owing, however, to the short period remaining of Ills present session of Congress, and iho press of business, tlio cntumiUoe liuvn been unuhln to devise any bettor or moro efficient mode by which to recognise tlio claim of Air. Wo would respectfully invoke the intention of our Northern Abolitionists, ami particularly tho disci- pies of Unctctoimcubiiiisiu, who profess a never- •lying sympathy for the black man, (if lie he a slave) to the fact that tlio “tree while” rilatn of Illinois has just passed a law, to parallel which, in absolute First. It prohibits the bringing of any uegro or mulutto into the State—no nintlor whether they he bond or free—on pain of linury linn and imprison ment, besides paying costs of prosecution. Tlio uppurent effect of such a provision is, practically, to cut oll'all communication gro and Illinois white mail. The bluck race is al together proscribed. Second. If a uegro or mulatto is brought into the State through the iusiniuiouiulity of a porsou or persons not residing withiu its boundaries, due pro vision is mndo for bringing them to punishment by occsa of requisition upon tlio Governor of the ato of which the olfciidiup party niuy bo a resident. Third. It is adjudged a high misdemeanor for u negro or Mulatto, bond or freo, to emm into tho rftute and remain ten days, with uu intention to re side there. If there is any acceptable difference hero between tho ”peculiar instinction” Boutli and the Illinois imitation of it North, it is certainly on the side of the former. In the South the African is only a sluve ; in llliuois ho is made both a slave uud a vag abond. Fourth. Fifth. One hull* the fine imposed goes to the par ty or witness iiiukiug complaint. The other ‘ “* goes to what is called a Churity Fund—a fund lor the relief of tho (it is presumed while) poor of tin; .ouuty. Sixth. Yet, from the very nature of his belief, the AIus- selmuu is superstitious to a great degree; icitfi that superstition, however, there is associated a primi tive simplicity of inanucrs, uml uniform integrity and iuguuuouMie.s that challenge un admiration.
