Tins doctrine of futulism, in connection with tlio
promise of Mahomet, that tlio souls of ull those who
uro killud in defence of the ” fuiili," will be instantly
transported to Puradiso, renders the Turk perfectly
reckless on the haillc-field. Confident tlmt he will

ugony until tho hotly is interred. On this account
they hurry it off lYom tho place of demise to the
grave as speedily us possible, und it is indeed a cu
rious aud horrifying spectacle, to wituess a corpse
clad in sepulchral garmeuts, placed upon a litter,
which is borue upon the shoulders of four muu, who
are hurrying il rapidly along to its fiuul resting
place. The pusscr by would ihiuk tliut they wero

os the horror of this sight, tlio looker oo can behold
tlio uncovered ghastly features, now rigid in icy

Only the male friends of the deceased accompany

ancient usage practised of washiug Iho feet. There
arc few, ifuny, ceremonies by the side of the grave.
Tho surviving relatives do not put on any faabili-
ineutn of mourning, but sometimes (lie men manifest
tlieir grief for the Joss of their kindred by allowing
their beards to grow to n prodigious length.
According to popular superstition, immediately
