Msdam« Anna llfaliop’n Concert To- *.?& Night, By the advertisement in anotlie*' column, it will be acen that Mudatne Anna Bisiiot* gives her second concert at St. Andrew Hall this evening. The programme is a very attractive one, comprising besides several choice selections from tho most popular Operas, several of Madame Bishop’s favorite songs, among the rest "John Anderson iny Jo,' w hich it is admitted she bag no equal. With Big. Strini she gives, in costume the cele brated prison scene in Anna Uolena. Another gem, iu the bill, ie La Pasadiia, in character, by Madama Bishop. Mr. Thackeray’* Lecture. Mistaking the hour, we reached the Hall last evening in lime only to lienr the closing por tion of Mr. Thackeray's Lecture on the Char- meter and writings of Dean Swift. We found the audience, which was a very large one, dfeeply absorbed in the theme of the lecturer, mud the little we heard caused us to regret that cur duties had prevented us from hearing the entire lecture. We havo seen in some of our exchanges, objections mode to Mr. Thacke ray's style of delivery. It is true that he docs not seek to display the gracos of elocutiou, but in this matter we decidedly approve his taste, Lectures, suoli as his do not need the aids of mxtraneouM ornMiieril. Tho common forms of declamation would be out of place in the deliv ery of his chaste and beautiful sketches. Iu hearing him we want no sound and fury—-1 oratorical flourishes, no sawing of the air. We listen for every word, ns it falls from his lips, in Ilia clear, distinct accents of a polished ami graceful reader. Wa heard but one opinion of the lectui last evening, find that was, unqualified appro- bation. Nuisances at Concekts.—The editor of tho New York Musical World and Times, describes u very common nuisance, in his nar rative of what befei him at tho lust Plulhai- munic in that city. It was bin misfortune, lie suys, to sit near a party, there, by whom, throughout the performance, u running uc- compaoimeiK of whispering and even loud Hiking was industriously kept up, greutly ex ercising the patience of Home near them, who would liuvo been glad to listen to the music. They discoursed together upon nature and art, the htaliioiiM and the feeliugH, and after discus*- ing the personal charms uud accomplishmcnis * f tuauv of their acquaintances, commenced upon those present. Mr. Eisfcld, they pro nounced a fine looking young man, hut they wondered "what he kept that stick going so for ?’’ When informed by oqp of the company that he was heating time, they thought it quite ridiculous tliut tho Society "couldn’t pluy with out that; tho brass bands, they said, were not obliged to have any body beat time for them." When the second movement of the Symphony commenced, one of tho ladies enquired of her neighbor “what they were goiug to play it over again fort" and during the last move ments the same lady declared “it wa* a shame to play it over so many times." Mr. Burke’s violin solo succeeded in winning sumo atten tion, but the duet between flute and clarionet was pronounced "the gem of tho evening." Indeed, the fluid wus unanimously accorded the first plneo among instruments, "it was so sweet;"—and much mure of the same quality. i ** Hydrophobia.—Joseph Mail- lelt, a rrenchman, fur.mauy years a worthy and industrious stevedore on South Water street, was slightly bitten ou the leg by his pet dog, last Sunday week.
